Got it for two bucks.
VERY flawed movie of course, but I still like it alright.
If anything, it tried to do way too much too soon; especially for a character that your casual audience woulda known the name, but not much else.
Still, I don't think it's as awful as its rep. I'd give it like a 5-6 outta 10.
And for DC's sake, imagine if it had hit. They'd be way farther along in their universe.
Then again, if Reynolds as Hal worked we might not have gotten Deadpool so who knows?
But, yeah, worth 2 dollars anyway. Ambitious attempt that fell pretty short.

I picked up the DVD back over Easter for about £3. When I took it to the cashier he looked at it, and was like "Really?" and I said "I honestly don't think it was that awful. Wasn't great or even good, but it wasn't as bad as people are saying".
I watched it later that night and after hearing Reynolds say that his heart wasn't really into it because he'd always had his eye on Deadpool, you can kind of tell that. But yeah I agree, too much too soon. Parallax could've at least been a 3 movie arc.

I will say, I'm watching it with 'maximum movie mode' on where Geoff Johns pops up on-screen and talks to the creative teams and such. And they're at a point where he's talking to Ryan and they're talking about what a fit he was as Hal. Hahaha, nope.
But that said, I think you and I look at it the same way. It's an ok movie to put on and just take for what it is if you can pick it up for a couple bucks.
It's a little disappointing in that you coulda had a really good franchise; but it's solidly in an 'eh, it was alright' type of flick.

I saw this in theatres and the ONLY good thing I'll say about it is that it's not DC's worst movie (BTW Batman & Robin is above it)

I don't hate Batman & Robin either. That one is stupid but fun.
This one fails in what it's trying to do, but there are pieces I enjoy.

I liked the Green Lantern movie alright, though I think the lame villain really hurt it. I know they had to set up Sinestro as the mentor who eventually goes rogue, but he's THE signature GL villain. Red Lanterns also could've made for fun villains though it probably would've been too soon for them.
If anything good came out of it, it was that Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively met on the set and turned from a movie couple (Hal and Carol) to a real one.

Yeah, I'm with Kevin, it was really flawed but I got a kick out of the fact someone tried to turn my favorite part of the DCU to a movie. I hope they try again properly at some point because the characters alone can make it really fun.
I will say, though, I hope Geoff Johns realizes he needs to tone back his creative control when it comes to the wider movie universes. There was no good reason to have Parallax AND Sinestro teasing the Sinestro Corps in the first goddamn movie.
Heck, you could have made the Sinestro turn a slower build since they did somewhat of a good job in the movie itself.

I only saw it once, when I didn't know anything about GL. I didn't think it was that terrible except the main villain being a cloud or something.
I recently watched the GL animated series from 2012, which I really liked and made me want to get into the comics so now I'm in the middle of Geoff Johns run since everyone says his is the best. It's pretty cool so far except they're constantly referencing stuff that happened in the past and I don't feel like going back decades to know everything.

I wouldn't have made Parallax a part of it at all; especially having re-watched it just now-Mark Strong was easily the best part of the movie. His Sinestro was great, and 'saving' him for a sequel that is never gonna happen was a mistake.
I would've had it to where the first half is Hal getting the ring, being trained etc. Then we see Sinestro has achieved "peace" on Korugar by pretty much enslaving it. This is not the Guardians way, Sinestro can't see he's ruling by fear and blah blah blah and there's the conflict there. Hal overthrows and exiles Sinestro with the help of the Corps and he's defeated. Then you can still have the stinger at the end where a Sinestro that has lost everything gets the yellow ring and Sinestro Corps is coming in the sequel and etc.
Just make it a way simpler story about power corrupting and having to be beaten by willpower. Hal becomes GL and has to defeat what was up till then the greatest GL.
I do away with most of the Earth stuff as well.

Yeah, I have no idea why that wasn't the story because, like you said, that's super simple and fits with the lore. Then the next one, you could introduce someone like Mongul or someone else from the galactic DC gallery for them to fight before the third would be revealing about the Manhunters and you could introduce the Red Lanterns from there and such. If not, there's enough in the GL backlog of villains to introduce that'd be cool to see on the big screen. But they tried to do the 100m before managing to stand up. And yeah, that animated series was pretty damn good, also shocking that they actually went through with revealing the Manhunters wiping out an entire star system which leads to Atrocitous. On a kids show, none the less.

Except for possibly Tron 2, I don't think there has ever been a movie that is just made to be shot in 3D like that one was and they did NOTHING of note with it. Like most 3D movies, it was an utter waste of the format

My biggest issue is that it felt like a Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie. The pacing, settings, everything. I went in hoping for a space adventure, and 3/4 of it took place on Earth.

Hal becomes GL and has to defeat what was up till then the greatest GL. I do away with most of the Earth stuff as well. That scenario would've made for a much better movie. I saw it opening weekend in theaters and I was so disappointed. Hal Jordan's Green Lantern has been my favorite superhero for as long as I could remember. I've watched it one time since and I still don't feel good about the movie. The Hal and Carol stuff was ok but felt like a big rip off of the Tony and Pepper stuff in Iron Man. Reynolds just wasn't the guy to play Hal. Parallax was awful. Having a horrible CGI cloud as your villain was a mistake. I get that they wanted to plant a bunch of seeds for sequels but it was just a mess. Superhero movies were doing so well I guess they figured they'd be fine doing whatever they wanted. There were simple things like Hal never really being trained but at the end when Hal saves the day Kilowog says "That's how I trained him!" or something to that effect like they had this great bond when they really never did. It made zero sense. How was none of that picked up in editing? Maybe it was. Maybe they didn't care. Idk. Sinestro was the best part of the movie for sure. His turn from green to yellow gave me chills. I actually got excited for once in the movie. I was hoping that the sequel would be better now that the cloud was out and we had full on evil Sinestro. Then I thought about how bad the rest of the movie was and figured it wasn't going to happen. I don't want to watch the movie again. It's not about hating on the movie. I waited forever for a Green Lantern movie. I wanted it to be amazing. It's not a great movie but I think it's more about the disappointment with what we got compared to what we could've had if the right people cared about that property rather than just pushing out a polished turd for a cash grab. Maybe someday someone will do it right. That said it still hasn't happened for the Fantastic Four so I don't have my hopes too high.

I agree that Parallax was the wrong choice for villains. There are numerous other individuals that would have made a better choice.
I did like the scene where Carrol first sees him in his costume though. That was really funny.

I have stated multiple times this movie would be better if they let it be one movie.
Instead it was a trilogy of footage forced into one.
the stuff on earth, training with the corps, and parallax are three movies worth of plot... and so NONE of them got a chance to breath or have any kind of weight to it.
Hammond goes evil and is stopped within like 10 minutes.
Parallax is never really shown to be a threat except for killing Abin Sur in the beginning... I mean it's talked about as being a threat but screenwriting 101 show DON'T tell.
and finally Sinestro puts on the yellow ring for... really no damned reason except that it's Sinestro and he wields a yellow ring.

There are worse superhero films, for sure, but this felt instantly dated. Not in terms of special effects, so much, but in how it felt in format like it should have come out in 2002 or something.

It definitely has a lot of flaws and it's frustrating on many levels because I'm a big Green Lantern fan. However, for what it is...it's really not horrible. It was a solid attempt, but it really could have been soooooo much better.
