Seriously, you'd think a media company, especially one a s young as YouTube, would be aware that just because something has cartoon characters in it doesn't mean it's for kids. Don't get me wrong, if I were an advertisers, I wouldn't want to support content I find offensive by proxy, but surely it would be more constructive to make it possible for advertisers to choose which kind of videos their ads get put on, rather than an unfair and inappropriate blanket ban? Or even better, what about creating a system that allows channels and advertisers to communicate directly so that they may came up with some sort of agreement? There wouldn't even need to be any input from YouTube itself, just make some messaging system for discussing ad revenue (Hell, it would finally give their messaging system a reason to exist).
And because I know people are going to bring up that meaningless non-argument, yes, I am aware that "it's their site" and they're allowed to choose their rules (although they are not allowed to "do whatever they want" as so many people like to put it. Laws still apply, people). That's besides the point, which is that their rules suck. Also, when your business relies on content provided by the public, it really isn't just your site any more if you're going to place ads on - and therefore make money from - other people's work (and I mean actually making money from other people's work, unlike making a review or parody of something that's about someone else's work while being its own thing).
And yes, if that's your business model, you should in fact give priority to your userbase, the people you depend on, over advertisers. Advertisers are supposed to support businesses, not the other way around. And sure it is only fair to try and accommodate them, but they shouldn't be the be-all, end-all of how a company does its business. Advertisers should be considered, but it shouldn't be all for them and nothing for users and content creators. Besides, if YouTube keeps banning content like that, they soon won't have anything to put their advertisers' ads on.
And of course, this is YouTube, meaning that like every other major system they've created since Google took over, this rule can and will be abused. Remember the last time they tried to block "offensive" content so their precious advertisers wouldn't have their feelings hurt, and it ended up with videos being hidden from searches for even mentioning homosexuality as something that exists? Or the one before that, which supposedly was just making an already existing guideline more explicit without actually penalizing anyone, yet thousands of videos and even entire channels, even when they had no prior strike, were immediately taken down with no warning or explanation?
Meanwhile, there is still no penalty for abusive copyright claims. The one thing YouTube REALLY needs to fix, which of course they are showing no interest in doing. After all, if they did, then they'd have to penalize their advertising pimp daddies since they are some of the most notorious abusers of this system. After all, featuring a small sample of a copyrighted work in a video that's mostly your work for illustrative purposes is theft, but claiming a video that's 95% somebody else's work and intellectual property as your own and taking the money they're supposed to make from it isn't, as the courts have shown countless times.
Oh wait, courts haven't shown that, because almost no copyright claim case has made it to courts, because the people making fraudulent claims are wall aware that their claims are, indeed, fraudulent so they give up if channels insist on disputing claims. And on the rare cases that companies did take it to court, it was stuff like Digital Homicide, utter nutjobs who have no idea how the law works and who ended up having the book thrown at them and rightfully being bitten in the ass.

There's so many of those vids that claim to be real videos and it's some bootleg crap of kids cartoon characters doing violent things. If THAT'S what the aim of this is for, thank God.
I have a niece that watches vids on YouTube on a tablet we keep here, and I do monitor what she's watching (and I'm enough of a fan to be able to go "wait, the art style is off, this is some knockoff that's gonna go down a bad road"), but I don't feel like I should have to watch those videos with her just to be sure she doesn't watch something bad.
Now, I obviously don't intend on YouTube applying this correctly and expect there to be plenty of collateral damage (LPs involving games with those characters, YTPs, etc.). I'd hope not, but considering how 5-6 hours of work at my part-time job nets me more money than any pro-wrestling content creator on YouTube right now (unless you squeeze WWE's own page itself in there), it wouldn't surprise me if they just aim a missile at the whole thing and don't care if they thrash 100 harmless channels for every harmful one.

Youtube has been limiting their creators for the entirety of 2017 now, creative content can be produced for any agegroup. Them clearly only wanting Children as main viewers is ridicoulus. Most youtubers statistical viewing age is 18-24, those barely make any money now. They are doing the same thing TV is doing now and just because some advertisers complained, its not like they were really going to leave. The Disney involved in youtube is killing them. Its only a matter of time until the big youtubers with teen-adult contend move to different streaming plattforms. People that made 50k a week are making 4k a month now, if anyone thinks that is acceptable to them is delusional.

Make it harder to create an 18+ Account. As weird as that stuff is, it should still be allowed to access and watch. If you read about the other demonitized areas on youtube, you would see that this is just another step of becoming family friendly exclusive. Youtube should be a place for every legal kind of artform. There are other solutions to stop letting kids watch these, there is also real porn on the internet you know? Should we ban that aswell? |

I can see what you're saying but your example doesn't really work. Porn on the internet has places, it's not like kids would extensively go to Pornhub or Clips4Sale for stuff that suits them. YouTube just needs to sort out their algorithm and put the work in to not piss off advertisers to get them to leave. It's nothing to do with making it more family friendly, it's to do with not wanting to piss further people off. Except they're not aiming at the stuff that pissed the advertisers off in the first place (the racist, homophobic and sexist videos being associated with companies), they're throwing the baby out with the bathwater and going 'This might annoy them too, we need to restrict that'. The fact that, as I've said before in other YouTube threads, that they aren't listening to creators or even the advertisers says a lot about how YouTube is running stuff right now. |

I for one hope every fan video featuring Spongebob, Pokemon, Sonic, Mario, and/or My Little Pony (often times they are all in the same videos) are removed because that is all the teenager watches and it drives me crazy.
