'96/'97 Stone Cold is my favorite wrestling character ever in history.
"I ain't impressed with a damn thing, because Billy Gunn just got through with a brutal match, and Ken Shamrock went out there and tried to take advantage of him! I want to know what the hell is so impressive about that! What the thing is with Ken Shamrock is, he doesn't even belong here, because the WWF is Stone Cold's place! All he did was get in a couple of street fights, and someone had a little video camera and filmed him, so all of a sudden he's a big star! He's overrated and he's a big piece of trash!"

It's weird, because I feel like Scott Steiner should compete for "most intense ever", but he overplayed his hand so much it became cartoonish. I CAN'T PLAY THE GEETAR!

It's all about the no eyebrows!
Which, fun fact, I didn't realize all this time he was sans eyebrows, until about five years ago.

His promos he cut on Bret Hart leading into their Sur Series match changed my outlook on wrestling going forward. As a teenager who had always enjoye wrestling but never had a favorite since Hogan in the late 80s I now had a character to invest in.

His eyebrows are blonde, they're there, you just can't really see them. He's talked about this before now.

I still love how his feud with the Harts was essentially over the fact that he thought they were uppity pricks.

Intensity, you say? I looked up the dictionary and came across this picture. No words.

Imagine Stone Cold emerging as a talent nowadays with the horribly over-scripted promos and characters micro-managed, feuds that aren't drawn out, and writing that doesn't benefit the talent at all.
In this era (hell since 2005) we would never have gotten the Austin 3:16 promo.
I wonder what other amazing promos are being missed out on, and amazing characters that could have organically grown to become the biggest thing this company has seen.

96-97 Austin was the only time in his career that I can say I was a fan. He was my favorite wrestler during that time period. Heel Jake Roberts is who I think was the most intense wrestler of all time. I always wonder what a young, healthy and drug free Jake Roberts would have been around during 96-01.

YOU CAN AFFORD TO FLY OUT TO CALGARY AND DO AN INTERVIEW WITH BRET IN HIS CUSHY LITTLE HOUSE! WHY DONT YOU FLY OUT TO VICTORIA TEXAS, VINCE? DO AN INTERVIEW AT MY HOUSE?! HELL NO, I HAD TO PACK MY BAGS AND FLY TO THIS STUDIO MYSELF!
I liked that feud because Steve took every little thing so personal, because he's not a star like Bret Hart. He wanted to prove he's just as big a star.
(Although unhinged, Ahmed Johnson was really intense. To the point you couldn't understand him.)

"Cliches are cliches and an ass-whipping is an ass-whipping"
Austin in this era was the GOAT. Phenomenal matches, intense promos and everything he did felt like it was must-see.

Intensity, you say? I looked up the dictionary and came across this picture. No words. 2 names to nominate to "Most Intense Wrestler Ever": Terry Funk and Magnum TA.

I like how increasingly unhinged Bret became as the fans warmed up to Austin more and more, culminating in his turn in March 97.
