I really wish the Bret feud could have lasted longer. It's hard to imagine two better foils for each other.

Some 1980s intensity that is sorely lacking in today's product.
And the intensity from this handshake alone almost destroyed the universe.

Vince: "You must have been impressed by what just happened in the ring, Mr. Austin"
Austin: "I ain't impressed by a damn thing!"

Intensity, you say? I looked up the dictionary and came across this picture. No words. 2 names to nominate to "Most Intense Wrestler Ever": Terry Funk and Magnum TA. Both before my time. Only seen Funk as Chainsaw Charlie, therefore a crazed old loon. Can't comment.

It's all about the no eyebrows! Which, fun fact, I didn't realize all this time he was sans eyebrows, until about five years ago. He has eyebrows man they're just light you can't see them properly. He's talked about it on his podcast I think.

Pink tights... What the hell is that all about Bret? (This ain't no ballet class!) Sunglasses and sparklers! (What a load of CRAP!) So Bret, you're coming back to continue a legacy?! (Uh-uh!) Stone Cold's gonna make your comeback a living hell! You know you can start begging for some mercy right now! (You will beg for mercy) You're not gonna find it! I think you're completely pathetic! You're the best there is, was, and ever will be- whatever! (Son, you're looking at the best there is) AUSTIN 3:16 RULES! I will kick your pink & black ass all over the Garden! (I'm gonna end your legacy...) You will beg for mercy! (...At Madison Square Garden)
You know Bret, the whole world knows that you quit the WWF... (You quit!) Because you lost to Shawn Michaels! (The pretty boy!) The Boy Toy... kicked your ass back to Canada! You couldn't face yourself and you damn sure couldn't face your family! (You ran away in shame) You should've picked another time to come back, son! (I ain't no sexy boy) When the bell rings and it's time to get down to business... (I don't dance, son!) I'm gonna take seven years of frustration and being pissed off out on your ass! (Think about it like this Bret) You can finally go home, look yourself in the mirror and get a little piece of mind because you will know you were indeed beaten by a real man!

God, I loved Austin during this time period. Just a flat out perfect character...which wasn't much of a character.

"He sent me a first class plane ticket to fly to Calgary, We went down in the basement the famous Stu Hart basement and I whipped his ass for 30 minutes. Put the sharpshooter on for 10 minutes. Then Stu came down, Ah Steve let go of Bret, so I whipped Stu's ass."

I liked his intensity, rivaled Shamrock and Angle and he who is not to be mentioned.
On the mic, I think he's mad overrated. Him and Shane Douglas both seem to have benefited from the use of expletives when it was still kinda taboo. And I really didn't see the appeal at the time. I know he was over as all hell. But I still don't view him as an elite all-time time mic worker. I preferred his ECW promos. In WWE, he seemed to be gaining momentum in his character. But in ECW, he just seemed like he actually gave no f***s.

Imagine Stone Cold emerging as a talent nowadays with the horribly over-scripted promos and characters micro-managed, feuds that aren't drawn out, and writing that doesn't benefit the talent at all. In this era (hell since 2005) we would never have gotten the Austin 3:16 promo. Austin 9:99 says you just subscribed to a butt whooping.

I think JR had a lot to do with it as well:

I really wish the Bret feud could have lasted longer. It's hard to imagine two better foils for each other. I'd like to think if Bret never left and Austin's injuries never caught up with him as quickly as they did that they would be like Santana and Martel as two guys who would always be at each other's throats any time they were in the vicinity of each other, regardless of storyline involvement or even alignment.

I think JR had a lot to do with it as well: ~glass breaks~ JR: "Good god almighty here he comes!" I'm pretty sure Austin mentioned this at some point. His advice for young guys was to spend time around the commentators explaining their character so that the commentators could put them over even more. It was great advice, the commentators paint most to the picture of how we think of guys and making them understand the character is a huge step to getting over.

"If you put the letter S in front of the word Hitman, then you get my exact opinion of Bret Hart!"
Even though I loved his feuds with McMahon and the Rock, it was this time period that Austin became my favourite wrestler, a title he holds to this day. His intensity was just off the charts, and everything he did had so much conviction, probably due to him channelling all the frustration of his career up to that point into those promos. He seemed genuinely pissed off with everything, and to an extent he probably was.
Like I've always said, Austin's feud with Bret is my all time favourite feud. The months of build that lead to the double turn at WM 13 is as close to perfect storytelling as you'll ever get in wrestling. And that match- that spectacular match- may be the most important match in WWE history. It was the beginning of the changing of the guard from the New Generation to the Attitude Era, and it catapulted Austin towards being the man that changed the fortunes of that company.
