Starscreamus Prime - after a convenient face turn as dethroning Megatron wasn't working out. Ponder - why replace Prime at all? It's like killing off He-Man for Orko to have the power. His toy had been discontinued. Seems ludicrous now, but back in the day, toy companies would discontinue toys after 2-3 years, even the most popular characters (why do you think we got "power armor" versions of He-Man and Skeletor? It's so they could still sell the characters while still pushing them as new toys). And at least Prime's death in the movie was handled better than in the comic (he committed suicide because he killed NPCs in a computer game,,no i'm serious). Didn't know that. It's definitely strange. Michael Bay changed the main character designs in the last two films to help sales as demanded by Hasbro.

Wasn't Jazz Prime's #2 before Ultra Magnus showed up? That would have been interesting.

Not sure why, but the first choice among the classics for me was Wheeljack. Something about how he carried himself in the cartoon, willing to bend rules and take big chances while being logical about it? That seems leadership material to me.

For a brilliant strategist and sly operator, can't believe anyone's not suggested this guy yet... Actually... Ironhide. Assumimg they don't just kill him off in the first few minutes in this version. I wasn't even really a big fan of the character, but grizzled soldier becomes leader would be interesting. Ironus Prime would definitely be an interesting take. I was thinking of him as well. I know that Prowl was always considered Prime's right hand man, but I think they had his personality laid out that he was such a control freak and so standoffish, he wouldn't be able to handle a leadership position where he'd have to adjust to changes and defeats on the fly and have to control the troops.

As a kid, Bumblebee was my favorite Autobot, so I would have loved to see him take over as leader. Maybe he could have been Goldbug Prime or something. On a side note, I actually preferred Rodimus Prime to Optimus Prime as a kid. It's funny how my tastes have changed. Rewatching the series as an adult, I appreciate Optimus Prime a lot more and can't really accept anyone else as Autobot leader. Similarly, I hated Megatron as a kid and wanted Starscream to lead the Decepticons, but now I find myself loving Megatron more. Bumblebee has even been supplanted as my favorite Autobot by Tracks and Powerglide. But, I digress. I felt this would be a logical path in the aligned continuity cartoons. Spoilers below: {Spoiler}Bee's path (TF Prime): Faithful scout, reliable all around, instrumental in the defeat of Megatron (the first time), dies in battle with Megs but is revived in the Energon pit, vocal processor heals as well.
Knighted by Optimus as a warrior.
RiD: Seemingly made a beat cop on Cybertron? Helps train Strongarm and reigns in Sideswipe and Grimlock. Proves himself a worthy leader despite his lack of self-confidence. Clashes with Prime upon his return, but ultimately gets Prime's respect and Prime actually follows his command.
Certainly seems he'd be eventually suited to get the matrix or imbued with the power of the primes. Kinda frustrates me that it clearly builds to this but probably won't go there.

Everybody is ignoring the obvious choice. The Leader we all deserve. That screencap is apropos to what you just said... (I can't throw shade, I made Leader-1 part of the Autobots when I got his large figure.)
