Easily Christopher Daniels for me. Bruce Prichard says he was the original choice for the Higher Power role but Vince thought he was too small and he was gone. There are so many other ways Daniels could've contributed to the WWE but he wasn't even given a chance to do something else. Such a wasted opportunity. I like Daniels but in 1999, that would have gotten a collective "Huh?" from the crowd if he was revealed as the higher power. I thought Colt would have fit right in the WWE, he doesn't take himself seriously and would be down for just about anything that was suggested. I would've been fine with Daniels as the Higher Power. It was a similar opportunity as the debut of Kane. It didn't matter who it actually was because the presentation was going to be that this guy was immediately a big deal.

Perhaps, I just couldn't see it panning out. The presentation with the reveal was that it was someone that would be shocking, as much as I like Daniels I don't think that would have been the best way to bring him in.

Callihan was doomed, but he's my pick. Even if he made it to main roster, he's a gimmick/look Vince's dumbass would never have gotten. Although I'd prefer the presentation he's had on the indies rather than the glorified troll doll with horrible tights. Sammi's even admitted since then that once he got to NXT and on TV he realized that he needed to change up his look and how he presented himself.

The indy guy screwed over the most by WWE will be that Last Outlaw guy they signed just to take his name as yet another nickname for the Undertaker. What about the guy who had the Repo Man gimmick in the indies before they got him to sign it away for Darsow? ?

My "favorite" was a job guy on Velocity or whatever, but one who also went after DeMott. His attitude wouldn't have helped if he was anything like my indy show experiences with him.

AJ Styles. Samoa Joe. Johnny Gargano. Tomasso Ciampa. Shinsuke Nakamura. Karl Anderson. Bobby Roode. Roderick Strong. Austin Aries. Bobby Fish. The list goes on. They stopped giving out new names shortly after signing him. It does people in his situation a disservice. Killian Dain. Aleister Black. Andrade Almas. Nick Miller. Shane Thorne. They're still changing names. Those guys are all considerably lesser stars than the ones above.

That guy screwed himself. They just wanted the name and offered him a good amount of money. But he thought he was good enough to be in WWE. Was he surprised by being released? Vince wants people to seize the brass ring and fight to get an opportunity, so as much much as people like to mock the guy for taking the smaller payday, it's hard to blame him for taking a chance to get a foot in the door. The aim of every indy performer should be to get on the WWE's radar if they're serious about making money. 100% agree. But becoming good enough to get noticed and being selected is gonna do more for you than trying to strongarm your way in.

Out of all the people on this list, Kazarian has no place on here. This goof left because he didn't want to shave his head...something he ended up doing years later on his own accord.
AND HE CUT HIS HAIR RIGHT AFTER BEING CUT. I forgot about that until somebody else pointed it out.

Colt should be a millionaire. That's how bad I think the wwe failed him.
But any shot of being a real star died when Colt met with Vince.
McMahon asked Colt about his hobbies outside the wrestling business, Colt said that he loved stand up comedy, Vince then apparently said, "Comedy? Like Jackie Gleason and Red Foxx?" Colt said no that he liked Andy Samberg and the Judd Apatow crew like Seth Rogen. Unfortunately McMahon had no idea who those guys were. The age gap was so big that McMahon didn't get Colt's idea of being a stand up comedy.
Then Vince asked if Colt was Jewish, unfortunately for Cabana, Vince then decided to make Colt an ethnic wrestler and everything went to shit.
Colt's opportunity in the wwe died because an old man who doesn't watches tv or goes to the movies or even reads couldn't get his idea. Funny story, when Vince started the XFL a journalist asked him who were his favorite football players of all time, Vince answered "Ernie Ladd and Wahoo Mcdaniels", that's how deep he's in the wrestling bubble.
I think that the most difficult test a performer has when they reach the wwe is that in that first meeting, you need to have Vince get your character. That initial pitch could be the difference between being a star or not.

To defend Vince here, he is way too busy to be caught up with celebrity pop culture. In a way, yeah it is important to know movie actors of today, but personally I would never base any gimmicks around it. I can't stand todays pop culture and cant blame people for either being ignorant, like Vince, or flat out hate it.

CMLL owns the copyright on the La Sombra name, and Almas lost a Lucha de Apuesta match and his mask before heading to WWE, so they had to rename him. Killian Dain would probably have stayed Big Damo if he was going to be used for the British show on a regular basis, as he was one of the biggest names on the UK scene.

Never cared much for Cabana either in WWE or the indies, really. And his ROH commentary is utterly bland.
So Callahan gets my vote.

Cabana. But I'm going to include everyone who debuted during that dreadful '08 'Superstar Initiative' period. Gavin Spears (Tye Dillinger) and Ryan Braddock were also casualties of this. None of them were given the slightest hair of a chance to become anything.

KENTA. They changed his name, took away his finisher, then gave him zero character. On top of that, they stuck him in the ring with greenhorn rookies who injured him. He's still trying to recover from their complete botching of his debut. The name thing isn't a big deal. Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, etc. all did fine with name/gimmick changes. What botching of his debut are you talking about? His first segment saw him beat up the Ascension and his first match was a win over Justin Gabriel, where he didn't perform very well. I love KENTA/Hideo, but his run has been marred by different things that aren't really the WWE's fault. Sure, he didn't have the GTS, but Owens and Seth got way over without the Package Piledriver or God's Last Gift. He didn't transition too well early on, and his matches suffered. Just when he started hitting his stride, he got injured and lost a year of momentum. He came back and got hurt against a green rookie (you were right on that one) before coming back and finally having his best NXT match against Roode. Hopefully, he can stay healthy now, but I don't blame his struggles on the WWE. I can't blame WWE for KENTA/Hideo Itami not having the success they envisioned. His debut he took out the Acension on his own and then brought in Finn who overshadowed him with the Demon gimmick at Takeover. If people watched when he first started in NXT, you can clearly see he wasn't anywhere near ready and when he finally started to show improvement he got injured. That's the luck of the draw and sadly for him his luck wasn't the best. The best thing that came out of this for Hideo is that the dude can cut a pretty good English promo now so he wasn't sitting on his ass doing nothing but still learning in some way.

Also that Slingshot Splash he used as his first impact move. LOL One of my biggest disappointments about Crowe's run was there were house show pictures of him in Rollins-like gear and a ponytail. He looked like a badass. Then he shows up on TV looking like he did for his NXT run... So much fail.

He's still trying to recover from their complete botching of his debut. Yeah. I'm actually thinking this might be the answer. KENTA was white fire hot in days before his injury, and it was clear from the get-go--and it remains--that they have not a clue what to do with him. Disclaimer: I think his injuries play a role in this as well, but they really screwed the pooch. KENTA is now unrecognizable compared to what I've seen him do.
