John Cena was allegedly not impressed with Dolph Ziggler

Former WWE writer Kevin Eck recently appeared on Wade Keller’s podcast and talked about how Baron Corbin needs to deliver in the match against John Cena at Summerslam. Eck recalled his time in WWE and discussed how talents are judged based on their performances with Cena:

“Cena will be very honest to his assessment of you. Dolph Ziggler’s the first guy that comes to mind, when they had a singles program together, in the beginning, John was all for it. John wanted to work with Dolph. And they did the house show loop together and as the heel, the heel traditionally calls the matches and John was letting Dolph call the matches and he wasn’t impressed.”

“And apparently John gave his assessment to Vince of Dolph and I think that sort of played into Vince’s thoughts already about Dolph and once that program ended it ended rather abruptly because Vince told us in a booking meeting one day: ‘God, I think we’re doing a disservice to John, this is bringing John down’ and so Dolph was moved out of that program.”

Well if Cena's letting the guy call the matches and he's not performing, he's not performing. I always thought Dolph could take a good bump but that was about it. Cena has worked his arse off and if his opinion doesn't matter than who's does?

It's not like going into the program he was down on the dude, he was excited, so clearly something wasn't right for him to changed his mind.

FWIW, Cena's previously bigged up Cesaro and Luke Harper as two guys he thinks are underrated/underutilised by WWE.

Ziggler is one of those dudes I have grown to hate over the years, and part of it is his "New Hat" philosophy on changing things. The cosmetic differences are easily undercut by his same ol' stuff on the mic & in the ring.

As a face, he's "Tries Really Hard", and as a heel, he talks very slowly. He's the wrestling equivalent of Mad Libs.

Eh I'm on two minds about it. Ziggler was hot at the time and he was very over. If someone is that over it doesn't really matter how good they are at calling a match, especially when the majority fans don't know the inner workings of match structure even the smark ones.

Now if they were considering on if Ziggler was going to be a flag bearer or one of the top guys in the upper tier in a long circuit I understand on not wanting pull trigger on him.

I can't fault Cena. He's just giving his assessment and opinion to his boss like he was ordered too. You still have to be honest no matter if it's a popular opinion or not. Cena can be the only guy who has a bad experience with Daniel Bryan but still has to be honest about his experience.

Ziggler is good for a mid 2000s WWE developmental guy, but he's still not quite as good as guys who's spent some time working indies before being signed. It sounds snobbish, but most talents who were trained from scratch in that period were shortchanged by the system, left lacking in some way, knowing how to do moves but not how to assemble said moves into a quality match or work the audience as well as they should. Because guys like Ziggler started out in the big leagues they never had to develop those instincts in order to get booked, and they were hell bent on making everyone work the 'WWE style' at that point, which meant they were taught how to work one match style only.

Yeah, I was gonna say Cena got over on character alone, and stayed over because of how much people began to hate him. He is shit in the ring unless he's in with a master like Cesaro or Bryan and doing spotfests.

You say that but Cena 9 times out of 10 has the crowd actively engaged for his matches.

It specifically mentions Cena not being impressed by Dolph's ability to call a match. Which has to do with putting spots in the right place to get reactions. Being able to do superkicks or reverse ranas doesn't matter much when the crowd doesn't give a shit.

My biggest gripe is the way he awkwardly moves. He doesn't have the fluid motion of a good pro wrestler, and his moves don't look like they hurt. His punches look weak, his STF doesn't even look like he's actually stretching his opponent, etc.
