Cat. 3 headed to hit Texas as the first Cat. 3 to make landfall since Wilma in 2005. Already they've declared a state of emergency.
All FAN members in that area, please stay safe.

Harvey is trying to put a Dent on the Texas coast.
Living on Galveston, I'll try my best not wash away.

Corpus Christie here, hoping for the best so I won't be, y'know, homeless, but I think I am away from the more dangerous portion.

Corpus Christie here, hoping for the best so I won't be, y'know, homeless, but I think I am away from the more dangerous portion. IN CORPUS CHRISTI? You're looking at the possibility of mandatory evacuations by sunrise.
You could see 30 inches of rain
Don't kid yourself here, this has formed quickly, is going to be a major hurricane and in a worst case scenario could produce tropical rainfall for the next 4 days.
I'm a storm chaser and I've been through storms like Sandy, Wilma and Ike. The winds will be sick, but this rainfall is going to be catastrophic. Id be chasing this but it came on so quickly I cant be in the area.
This might be the most rain Texas has seen since Amelia in 1978. (Amelia was 48 inches)
Stay on guard, good luck. To be honest I'd get the hell out. Just some advice from a weather dork. If you're underwater with no power for the next 10 days you'll struggle.
HREZ 72 hour potential... this isn't a joke has spots of 60+ inches.

Corpus Christi isn't even reacting to a category three hurricane? They really are a tough crowd.
All kidding aside, stay safe. Get out, don't roll the dice with stuff like this.

Category 3 doesn't do this justice. I hate the fact they use wind speed as the only mechanism for categorizing storms. Cycles of high tide with 10+ storm surge and areas with over three feet of rain... the flooding is going to be catastrophic.

That combined with the forecast say that the Harvey is not going to move much once it makes landfall sets it up to be very bad indeed.

Judging from the location, I think it's safe to say that the storm will wipe out the remaining Attwater's prairie chicken population.

I live in San Antonio so im not too sure what that means for me, but hoping you all stay as safe as you can. Same. This is the first time we've been in fairly good distance of a hurricane (that I know of), I know (obviously) heavy rains are expected and gusty winds are expected. But I hope everything turns out for the best. If you're looking for supplies and whatnot, Sam's Club is waiving membership requirements for anyone looking to stock up....

I know storms are unpredictable in nature. But is there a reason why that this hurricane is going to stall out once hitting land? I thought most hurricanes lose strength and speed up once making landfall?

I thought most hurricanes lose strength and speed up once making landfall? Generally when a hurricane makes landfall it gets grabbed by the jet stream and aching or low pressure mass gobbles it up and takes it west to east with it. Unfortunately in this scenario the high pressure system that's going to grab Harvey bangs right into another high pressure system. These systems really can't budge and it generally lasts a couple of days. Which is what happens here.

Category 4 now. Apparently officials are telling people who aren't evacuating to write their social security number on their arm. Oof.

Yea they are Category 4 "life threatening" storm and they said it's "not going anywhere" in this 5 days. The rain coming down will be worse than the previous day with day 5 being like a combined downpour from days 1-4

People weren't taking this seriously a couple days ago. The warnings for this storm are similar to Katrina.
Areas of the coast aren't going to be inhabitable for weeks.
This is going to spin and spin and just dump water from the gulf and the sky. Dams are going to fail, every river is going to dump over it's banks for weeks.
This is catastrophic.
