Anyone else have a problem with? Dave Meltzer goes to these PWG 3 day show events where guys are specifically cooperating to get has many stars for as possible for their match because they know he's in the audience, name moves after him and even make him part of the show. Meltzer declared the other day a match there the past weekend was best match on US soil this year. I don't know but wrestlers pandering to the reporter to me just seems so backwards or maybe wrestling in 2017 just goes over my head...

i think its more a case of wrestling live, especially PWG, is a lot more fun and exciting than wrestling on tv/dvd
and in PWG, the wrestlers are pandering more to the fans than Meltzer. get over with the fans more, get a bigger profile on the indies, catch the eye of WWE. naming or not naming a move after Meltzer isn't really going to do much for your career. the Bucks were already in hot demand when they started doing the Meltzer Driver, and Jobby McJobbinstein ain't gonna be on a rocketship to the moon if he starts doing the Meltzer Lariat

A wrestling journalist goes to a live show and enjoys it.
How is this a problem.
PWG was putting out amazing matches looooooooooooooong before Meltzer ever started going to the shows. Him finally taking notice and having fun an issue? If anything they've kinda been poking fun at the idea of Meltzer's caché in the business than pandering to it.
Like McMahonfan said - if these were some no-name dudes trying to get metlz's attention that'd be one thing, but really you've got it all turned around: these amazing matches aren't happening because Metlz is in the audience, Meltz is in the audience BECAUSE PWG is putting on amazing matches.
haha, also, it's not exactly a stretch to say that PWG puts out more potential MOTY contenders in a year than WWE by quite a bit.

At the end of the day, Big Money Meltz is a rasslin' fan. If you got a chance to see some good ass wrestling, why not take it?

Yeah, agreed with the last two posts on that regard.
If we want to talk about press and wrestling mixing together, look at WCPW when they had El Patron for a while. He was ditching other companies, almost fighting with people and getting into drunken rants on Paige's livestream and What Culture's main website covered none of it, probably because El Patron was still working WCPW shows.
Until he ditched them too.

I'd have a problem except he gave a WWE match 4.75 stars this year.

Guys at BOLA bust their ass to put on amazing matches because BOLA is the big indie show. Top names from around the world are brought in for these tournaments to perform in front a white hot crowd of people who to aford a ticket have agreed to have their organs harvested at the end the show. It's a big deal for reasons that have nothing to do with Meltzer. Dudes want to put on top tier matches for BOLA because it is going to be one of the most watched indie shows that year, and so there's more reason to go all out on the big stage there over a random match in Skokee, Illinois in front of a few dozen people. If BOLA is a big career break for you, then you're going to want to give your all to putting on a show hot enough that the people who watch the show become fans of you, so there's buzz and notoriety and maybe WWE even looks your way.

To add to This Player Hating Mothman's point above, WWE are regulars at PWG shows but most of all at BOLA shows where they've recruited guys like Bryan, Rollins, Owens, Strong, Ohno, Cesaro, Crews, Kalisto, Rush, Cole, O'Reiley, Fish, Crowe (when he was there) even people who were only in tournaments like Sabre Jr and LaRae. Probably more so than even ROH in some cases, PWG's probably one of the most influential promotions to WWE's style now.

I don't always agree with Meltz, but he's so knowledgeable and interesting to listen to. That's the sign of a great critic/reviewer.

Some of his scores are baffling though

How dare a man who reports on pro wrestling for a living attend wrestling shows? The f*** is he thinking?

Random and probably stupid question but: Does Meltzer not go to any WWE shows? Is he banned or something? Just doesn't care to??

Agree 100%. His ratings have become so ridiculously biased that I can hardly put any stock in them whatsoever anymore. It was bad enough when his PWG ratings last year were so generous and over the top (can't help but believe the pressure of the "5 star match" chants forced his hand), but he lost all credibility with me when he started giving 6 stars to the Japanese matches. Obviously match ratings are subjective, but until recently, I would put a lot of value in Meltzer's opinions and match analysis. Now, not so much.

Meltzer knows his stuff when it comes to pro wrestling. He didn't do the homework, he wrote the course.
The petty stuff people give him crap for is always funny.

Random and probably stupid question but: Does Meltzer not go to any WWE shows? Is he banned or something? Just doesn't care to?? He'll go for big shows like Wrestlemania, and whenever they're in his neck of the woods, but he doesn't make a note of chasing them and showing up on the road constantly like, say, an Ariel Helwani does. He watches everything anyway, probably enjoys being able to do it from the comfort of his home and around his family instead. Given that nobody is really supposed to ever talk to him, I can't say there's much reason for him to really do so.

I love the story Mick Foley tells in his book about wrestling Owen in a match where Meltzer was there live.

Not really relevant to OP but did Meltzer put out PWG star ratings this week?

How is that indicative of any "bias" beyond "biased toward wrestling he likes"? The match ratings are his own personal feelings and criteria about a given match, and it's not like he's throwing Kenny Omega high ratings just because Kenny's been on Observer radio.

The one match at PWG last year that got 5 stars (the first he'd ever given PWG) was a five star match. And the Tokyo Dome match was a 6 star match. It was a first time meeting that was built for two years and beyond delivered. There's nothing biased about those calls at all.
