November to Remember 1995 Rey Mysterio Jr. vs Psicoisis The ECW Mutants chant "¡Rudo!" for heels, love it. ReyRey is 40+ years old today if he gave his correct age at this match. Feels weird that when they do 10-counts, they count backwards. Then again, this is my first Mexican Deathmatch..... Nice of the announcer to switch to a Spanish countdown on the 3rd or 4th fall. The Sabu "Chair to the face" isn't as exclusive as I thought. Apparently luchas still needed to learn more chair fu. Despite an early mishap with the guardrail, this is a pretty "safe" lucha match for death match. A nice glimpse in the early career of Mysterio.

I thought I'd add a promo in here ECW CyberSlam 1996 Brian Pillman's promo Joey Styles has a WILD PILLMAN APPEAR on him! Pillman uses SHOOT - and CUSS! Was this the promo that followed a "Firing" angle on Pillman in WCW? A mountain of cussing, burying WCW, and picking on fans... and probably one of the earliest examples of "Smart mark" used on tv. Pillman is indeed Dean Ambrose's inspiration for crazy - and the "arrest" and "Fan attack" felt much more organic than some of the stuff that WCW and WWF tried to do when they started arresting their wrestlers. There was enough chaos and confusion and LACK of commentary to make people question where this promo actually fell. I think they had me until Shane Douglas spoke up.

Living Dangerously 1998 Bam Bam Bigelow vs Taz Since I wasn't introduced to Taz(z) until he was commentating for SD it's good to see him at work and how in shape he was. crowd has a balloon in the crowd and security don't care cause it ain't no beachball Joey Styles (after a sick Tazzplex into the crowd from the elevated ramp): "It's a miracle that we can see Bam Bam moving.... and not Taz's brains!" I wonder if that was the move that messed up Taz's neck for good, it hurts enough to watch it. I appreciate Bam Bam's commitment with a already-broken table - and observing the Foley rule ("You brought it, you take it!") Despite the size/weight disparity it's a pretty even match. And THROUGH THE RING THEY GO~! I hope they had a crashpad for that. Post-match theatrics with "Uncle Paul" and Joey arguing into the next match felt real - after all, Paul E dared TV and PPV to throw him off the air!

Wrestlemaina 15 X-Pac vs Shane McMahon I think this is underrated, and I remember being very impressed with Shane seeing this live Shane knows how to wrestle, and X-pac is a good hand. I didn't realize they trusted Michael Cole to call Mania that long ago. I was gonna ask about Test(RIP) and why he was wearing a weight belt til Shane started whipping X-pac with it. Lawler: (during X-pac's comeback) Shut up Michael Cole! We need a miracle [for Shane] to win this and you won't let me pray! Shane took two nutshots in this match, that's pretty "ambitious". HHH crashing the party and screwing X-pac...... VINTAGE HHH! Kane's arrival to break up the festivities needed more FIRE AND BRIMSTONE! Not a technical affair, but a well-told story.

Starrcade 1983 Roddy Piper vs Greg Valentine ooo, a Dog Collar match! eww, crappy graphics....... and horrible production, the ECW matches have better setups. And Greg Valentine still looks old, even in 1983! Tommy Young is NOT refereeing this match - smart man! Good use of the chain by both participants, and saving the blood for a few minutes into the fracas. And great selling by Piper about a previous ear injury that damaged his equilibrium. I still say Dean Ambrose is Piper's illegitimate son

WrestleMania 6 The Ultimate Warrior vs Hulk Hogan Halloween Havoc 1998 The Ultimate Warrior vs Hulk Hogan I think I'll do these back to back in the same post so I can compare them directly. WM6, they built with constant interaction, and neither really turning heel. Ventura: I'm not even gonna try to talk over this [crowd]. Gorilla: Then let's just watch! Your referee - a rather trim Hebner (lucky bastard) and where a rather infamous gif came from...... Ventura: (after Hogan and Warrior trade eye rakes) "let the two goody-two-shoes throw out the rulebook and get nasty! Yeah~!!" Ventura brought up Richard Belzer, so I looked up where Hogan put him in a legit hold on a talk show. And Hogan's a good guy? Maybe Jesse was onto something. I don't know what Warrior was trying to do as he was "powering up" but next 3 clothesline looked super light. Hebner gets bumped and plays woozy for the rest of the match- nice touch. Hogan kept himself strong but still made Warrior look like a million bucks with the most basic of matches. --------------------------------------- Fast-forward 8 years to another company. Hogan is in full nWo mode with Warrior haunting him. Snickers - feeding wrestling fans for 20 years nWo vs. oWn - that's too clever for WCW! Your referee for this match - Nick Patrick (the corrupt bastard) nobody did a gif of Warrior/Hogan from this match? I can almost hear the locker room laughing. To their credit this match has a quicker pace, borrowing a lot from the original bout as expected - including the ref bump! Brain: (as Warrior steals Hogan's weight belt) It's RECEIPT time! The "receipt" turning out to be someone pressing the schmozz button to put Warrior out so Hogan could get his win back. Creative control at its finest, folks! so what have we learned? Hulk Hogan is an Indian giver!

Smackdown July 8, 2004 The Dudley Boys vs Paul London and Brian Kendrick Curiously, the Dudleyz are billed from NYC. The role of Brian Kendrick will be played here by Billy Kidman. Your referee for this tag title match, Nick Patrick (the poor bastard) London bumping like crazy for the Dudleyz, light night for Kidman Tazz: "You're not gonna beat the Dudleyz with a schoolboy........" but they can get the setup for the win with the Whazzzzzzzzzzzzzaaap~!! Fun match

Starrcade 1996 Roddy Piper vs Hulk Hogan Your referee for this match, Randy Anderson. Piper DOES look really good here, physically. Looks more mobile than Hogan despite hip surgery. Piper putting the ref on a turnbuckle looks like something Dean Ambrose would do. Schiavone, Dusty and Brain at the table. Dusty's keeping the table afloat. Schiavone: (while Piper's got Hogan in a headlock) Hogan's gonna have some cauliflowered ears in the morning Brain: Fine with me! They had a special platform at one side of the ring for one of the handhelds. I've never seen that before and I don't remember it from the Malenko match I reviewed earlier. Schiavone: Piper's ripping Hogan's hair out! Brain: That shouldn't take long...... mostly a brawl, but Giant/Big Show and random fan interference leads Piper making Hogan go to sleep. add Schmozz, and some post-match histrionics and a call to "Vince" (russo? or Vincent, Dibiase's second?) to bring the belt out. Even in winning, Piper loses, overshadowed by nWo nonsense.

How about my favorite match ever? The DX band shows once again, WWE does NOT know how to mic a band! And THE EVIL DEGENERATE DR LEVESQUE is a doofus. dug the red/silver aprons for this show, they should bring that back. Rock brings Mark Henry for backup - that won't help at the top of a ladder...... Henry flirting/taunting Chyna... was this before "Sexual Chocolate"? Your referee for this match, "Iron" Mike Chioda. who raised the briefcase belt? There's a couple of spots with the ladder that I think convinced HHH that he shouldn't do ladder matches. Lawler: [HHH] swinging that ladder like Mark McGwuire! JR: Why don't we ever talk about Sammy Sosa? [beat] Never mind..... Rock bashing the ladder with a chair is a nice visual, followed up with the NYC crowd chanting "Break his leg Rocky, break his leg!" Rock got a Cena cross-chant while abusing Hunter. I STILL hate the catapault. There was another ladder! they DID learn from previous encounters of the "1 ladder" concept. The baseball slide with the ladder sounded good on paper, didn't work too well "on canvas". some wild selling into the second double down (HHH taking a ladder in the corner then dumping Rock). oooh, "Rock Bottom" (as in HHH pulling Rocky's tights... nice view ) This crowd ALMOST turned late in the match as a "Rocky!" chant broke out. but man, the POP for HHH when he won the title was awesome. I miss crowd reactions like that. Not bad for two guys who aren't known for this style of match.

Marty Jannetty vs. Kurt Angle-Smackdown 3/17/2005 I WAS THERE!!Angle's police escort for the night - Kenny Dykstra and the future Dolph Ziggler! This is during the Gold Medal challenge/Kurt Angle invitational. The role of Marty Jannetty will be played by some dude named Danny Giomondo. Your referee for this match - Brian Hebner (the skinny bastard!) total time for this match, 1:08. this ep is also good for DAVE SMASH LIMO~!

Big Bossman vs. Mr. Perfect from WM7. Despite the DQ finish, I feel like it's a really underrated match. Bobby Heenan introduced as the "Perfect Manager" is awesome and true! Hennig selling for Bossman was amazing and amusing... and the in-and-out move that Baron Corbin does has a source! Mr. Perfect also easily cheating around Joey Marella. Never mind this match, here comes ANDRE! I agree that Andre was distraction enough, but if Bossman's belt, Mr. Perfect getting racked on the ringpost or Heenan beating up Bossman on the floor wasn't going to cause a DQ, it was going to take a run-in of Haku proportions to get the bell. A shame, too. This was a fun match before all the arrivals. Points for the respect that Andre gives Bossman at the end. I certainly appreciate.

Mike Awesome vs. Spike Dudley, ECW Guilty As Charged 2000. Gonna get on with my New Japan World thread today as well. Have a bit if a backlog of recs myself. Like a good Dudley, he puts out ALL OF THE TABLES! and per the Foley rule, Spike goes through one first! Joey wants the match stopped after three broken tables? ref John Finnigan is an ECW ref and should laugh at you! Spike almost kills himself on his dive - glad Awesome caught him Mike Awesome helping tell a wonderful story of the underdog - and Joey and Cyrus are helping that along. Who the hell is Judge Jeff Jones? Joey: It looks like [Mike Awesome] is lacerated! Cyrus: that's what I just said! Throwing around big words is MY Gimmick! Joey: (after Awesome springboards into the crowd) Guys of Mike Awesome's size don't usually like to leave their feet! Cyrus: ...... Brother!Spike's Acid Drop through the table was spectacular.... the next table spot, not so much. Awesome(pun fully intended) one-armed powerbomb through the table for the finish. Spike didn't win the match, but the crowd won that main event

The Steiner Brothers vs "Dr Death" Steve Williams and Terry "Bam Bam" Gordy at Clash of the Champions XIX Egad, JR and Ventura... and MAT RASSLIN!! whoa, that's the biggest bridges I've ever seen! Randy Anderson is extremely lucky this match started very clean. Dr. Death slaps Rick - and the Dog-Faced Gremlin HAS HAD ENOUGH OF YOUR SHIT! Nice explosion of offense from both teams. and even better commentary - refreshing to hear moves being called, and Ventura LETTING JR call it all. Surprised that this one didn't get thrown out since no one was listening to the ref near the end. Clever finish to out-think the Steiners. A good story told here, something the current product sorely needs.

Triple H vs X-Pac - Backlash 1999 You mean this X-pac? (slight pause while I enjoy the fact he watched me manage!) I'll say this, despite all this injuries he's still willing to bump like a madman for the EVIL CORPORATE DR LEVESQUE. JR: (complaining that the match should be stopped because X-pac might have hurt his neck) Lawler: All X-pac has to do is say "I Quit" so the ref(Chioda) can end the match with a clear conscience! Nice spiny bikini that Chyna's almost wearing..... JR: Chyna is Just as evil as HHH! Lawler: Evil shouldn't look THAT good...... those aren't puppies, those are full-sized pit bulls, lookit the collar on em... Hunter makes X-pac look pretty good in this match DOWN GOES CHIODA! And before all of HHH's cheating brings him victory... A Wild KANE appears! He uses CHOKESLAM! HHH is KO'd! Chyna is KO'D! I think the real reason X-pac "Broke his ass" was bronco-busting Chyma when she had that steel bikini on HHH prevails, but he had to cheat pretty hard to get it.

A match which could never happen again in the WWE: DX vs. McMahons and Big Show, Hell in a Cell from Unforgiven 2006. This is the most violent match I've ever seen that made me laugh until my guts hurt at certain points. *might have to add Nitro/Hardy IC title match to watchlist* DX 06 is still funnier than DX98. Apparently Vince McMahon was "Broken" by DX (Matt Hardy takes notes since he was off that night working SD) This was apparently the debut of the taller cell, JR goes into detail about it. Big Show was a fat bastard in 06. Lawler: Shane got mad as a kid because gumball machines didn't take credit cards! Your referee for this match, Mike Chioda (poor bastard) Vince and Shane bleeding early - including HHH attacking Vince with a screwdriver (and framed MVP) Big Show is also a goofy bastard screaming in the bloody ear of HHH (that got ripped open at the Raw before this show) JR: this is the most brutal board meeting I've ever witnessed! (brutal when you've got blood on one of the handhelds. I almost wish board meetings I attended were as entertaining) Vince McMahon loves his job. We should all be jealous. Was Shane trying to do an Angle slam when he had HHH on his shoulders? And the selling in this match is hysterical. The stairs/chair spot sounds pretty brutal. Show has done that wrong and got a shiner for the ages(08?) And Vince is left kissing the World's largest athlete's ass.... and the crowd gets a "show" when he falls out of the ring. and you EARNED your "holy shit!" chants with this match - took buckets of blood, a couple of chairs, a screwdriver, a trash can, and a gimmicked sledgehammer (that the FUTURE BOSS DR LEVESQUE "broke" over Vince's back) There's enough action in this match that they could re-create this without the blood and still get the story across.

ECW Barely Legal 1997 RVD's promo after his match with Lance Storm That's the closest I've ever heard Zenmeister being "angry". Given the timeline, does this tie in with the WWE/ECW mini-invasion?
