I must be one of the few that doesn't like the animated movie specifically for this reason. All my favourite robots killed off in twenty minutes and then I am left watching characters that have no history with nor found particularly likeable.

That's why I always thought one of the biggest mistakes of the movie. You knew nothing about the characters unless you read the comics or looked at the back of the toy box

I didn't see the movie as a kid but I always knew about Prime's death so it never shook me up

I keep thinking I'm remembering it wrong, but I feel like there were two episodes after the movie where they located Optimus. One, he was corrupted and basically became zombie Optimus that they had to destroy... which I figured was them saying, "Okay, you want Prime back? Fine, but let's make it okay to kill him this time." Then one where they found an alternate dimension or something... I have no idea, all I remember is an episode besides that that ended with Prime basically being his old self and then riding into the sunset after the adventure.
It all seemed like retconning to appease pissed off fans while still trying to get rid of Prime.
All I know is, over 30 years later, I still get a little choked up from the battle scene up until his actual death.

Oh and all the Decepticon Seekers are supposedly killed or reformatted in the movie.. but the Coneheads show up in the following series. Not just as background characters either. Dirge, Ramjet, and Thrust are hiding out in ..ugh sigh.., Carbombya... I guess those were clones that Unicron chomped. . The coneheads were never the ones kicked out of Austrotrain, just skywarp, thundercracker and the insecticons. Although the movie was a bit messy contnuity wise. Blaster completly disappears, as does Snarl who appears a few times and thundercracker appears at starscreams cornation. On the otherhand, the dialogue is incredible for just a kids movie. The banter between Kup and Hot Rod all the way through. And the best line... "who interupts my coronation?" "Coronation, Starscream? This is bad comedy."

I recall that the complaints from parents about Prime dying kinda had an effect on the G.I. Joe animated movie. Which is why we got the "Duke is in a coma" thing despite being stabbed with a staff.

Moviebob's latest 'Really That Good' series dealt with Transformers:The Movie. It's a really good watch/interesting take and he goes into the Prime decision.
I don't think it was necessarily that bad, and it was certainly mainly motivated to clear the decks for the new toys. I just don't think Hasbro took into consideration the attachment kids had to Prime.

To answer the question - no, no I would not kill him off. Kill off Prowl and maybe Starscream to give gravitas to the war with casualties on both sides, but work in Optimus Prime vs Megatron as the main event, even after working in Unicron

The matrix of leadership suddenly being a thing was pretty jarring also. They could have done a much better job handling that.

I never realized just how edited his.....fate was. Scarlett's line right afterwards is spoken without seeing her, and then Doc's line at the end of the movie (his only one in the film, so they basically brought Buster Jones back in for one line - that's nice of them) is over a radio that isn't even seen. Watch it with the sound off and that man's dead.

When they were actually making the movie, only one 16 episode season had aired. They had no idea that they were creating an iconic character with Optimus Prime.

Yes they brought him back only to kill him off again (in an even more psychologically damaging scene) and then did it again in the Japanese episodes that never aired in the states as I understand.

I think they could have kept it, or have Prime in a coma or something through the movie, and the new characters are responsible for saving him by finding the tech to change his trailer into like, power armour. Then the Ultra Magnus toy is used for the new Optimus Prime since it's basically the same toy, but a new more powerful version.

The Coneheads look liked they exploded when flying into Unicrons mouth when Unicron was attacking Cybertron in robot mode. Wasn't the explosions just misisles they fired? Shockwave seems to have been killed in the movie. He never appears again. Apparently in the orginal script Unicron crushed a tower he's in.

Wasn't the explosions just misisles they fired? Shockwave seems to have been killed in the movie. He never appears again. Apparently in the orginal script Unicron crushed a tower he's in. According to IMDB, the newer comics adaptation of the movie (published by IDW a few years back) shows Shockwave and Reflector being killed in Unicron's attack on Cybertron. I kinda wish I remembered this as I used to have that book... And I would guess the Conehead trio we see attacking Unicron were duplicates of some sort, or an animation error, since (a) it definitely looks like they explode, and (b) Dirge, Ramjet and Thrust all appear in Season 3 after the movie. I must be one of the few that doesn't like the animated movie specifically for this reason. All my favourite robots killed off in twenty minutes and then I am left watching characters that have no history with nor found particularly likeable. One of the things I've grown to appreciate about the GI Joe movie is that they used everyone. Mostly newer folks, yes, but they animated every Joe into that movie somehow/someway. It's sort of a bummer the TF movie featured so few of the older ones in the final product (especially much of Season 2's new bots). I'm actually listening to a TF: The Movie podcast - Autopod Decepticast, one of those "1 minute of the movie per episode" podcasts - and they're breaking down a ton of stuff. There was a sequence during the battle on Earth where a ton of Season 1 & 2 Autobots show up attacking Devastator with Ultra Magnus, which kind of explained whatever happened to him during the fight as well (the aforementioned IDW adaptation showed him fighting Omega Supreme elsewhere).
