According to IMDB, the newer comics adaptation of the movie (published by IDW a few years back) shows Shockwave and Reflector being killed in Unicron's attack on Cybertron. I kinda wish I remembered this as I used to have that book... And I would guess the Conehead trio we see attacking Unicron were duplicates of some sort, or an animation error, since (a) it definitely looks like they explode, and (b) Dirge, Ramjet and Thrust all appear in Season 3 after the movie. Or they could be generic seeker drones like the off-colored ones in the series, including what would become Sunstorm, et al in the toyline. And didn't they come back only for Ultra Magnus to destroy them again?

Season 3 actually had some good stuff too. Loved the stuff with Starscream's Ghost wish he could have stuck around

Also on the first episode of season 1 they couldn't help but have animation errors already
