Mainstream? Of this era yes.
But it’s like comparing say, Whitney Houston and Beyoncé? If you was around for Whitney in the 80s you’ll probably lean towards her, if your a younger fan you go Beyoncé. I don’t know the musical stats but I guess they are pretty even but it’s basically apples and oranges based on when you were born

Sorry Houston might be a bad example due to her death. I guess you can Madonna and Beyoncé. Young fans know her but do they get her true importance compared to the more current Beyoncé? Probably not

No. I’ve never met anybody who doesn’t know who Hulk Hogan is. Rock is more famous as Dwayne Johnson. I’d imagine plenty of people don’t know he was ever a wrestler.

Hogan however was the catalyst for the two most historic boom periods in wrestling history. Rocks accomplishments in the ring are impressive but not on the level of Hogans Wrestling boom periods are great, but they aren't a guy who's made 11 films that have grossed over $100 million each domestically, and only eight of his 26 starring roles over a 17-year period has taken in less than $50 million domestically. He was the highest paid actor of 2016. Wrestlemania 28 broke the buyrate record with 1.3 million buys, plus around 70k in attendance gave it the gate record of $8.9 million. Those are some great, great numbers. AND that was a show with movie-star Rock headlining. BUT Furious 7 is the 6th biggest movie in history and has taken in $1.5 BILLION dollars worldwide. Fate of the Furious is #11 with $1.2 billion worldwide. There is no doubt more people are familiar with Rock than with Hogan. "But," you say "Hogan was EVERYWHERE during the peak of his popularity. MTV. The Love Boat. The A-Team. SNL. He had massive exposure, too." Well, yes, he did have massive exposure...in a much smaller area. Hogan was an American celebrity whose exposure even at his peak was contained to the U.S. and a few other countries. Rock's one of the biggest Hollywood stars in a time when Hollywood is penetrating much more of the world (China, India) than ever before and reaping massive profits (and star recognition) from it. Simply put, yes, Rock is more famous than Hogan ever was. The catch to it is that he's not famous *as* a wrestler. A surprising number of the people who know of and would recognize the Rock don't even know he used to be a wrestler. It's not about accomplishments in the ring, nor is about the quality of the films.

Be careful with the Rock here. I know hating Hogan is fashionable and while Rock has had a more successful Hollywood career....he's not exactly Brando and Gregory Peck. His movie career is littered with unwatchable's (fast and furious, Tooth Fairy, Baywatch)As a lead actor his movies have totalled $4.5 billion. "Unwatchables" or not, you don't have to be Brando or Peck to still be incredibly good at what you do. Case in point: one could say that while Hogan had a more successful wrestling career, he wasn't exactly Ric Flair or Shawn Michaels.

No. People think of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as a movie star. An action movie star. A guy who did action movies. Then comedy movies. Then BIG action movies. His association with wrestling isn't the same as that of Hulk Hogan. If anything, people think of The Rock as "that actor who used to wrestle" whereas folks always thought of Hulk Hogan as "That wrestler who's acting in this."
The Rock may be more famous than Hulk Hogan, but as far as wrestling goes, Hulk Hogan was, is, and ever will be the most famous. The Babe Ruth. Or at least the Ty Cobb.

Depends how old the person is that you ask. This has to be considered. Asking this question is a bit like asking in 1995 if Michael Jackson is more famous than Elvis Presley. In 1995, Jackson was probably more famous. But what percentage of people in 1995 recognized Michael Jackson vs how many people recognized Elvis Presley in the 1975 might be a more fair question. Also, Rock is a major movie star in a time when our entertainment culture is incredibly fragmented. I'm not much of a movie watcher. There are people grossing millions of dollars annually that I wouldn't be able to identify with a multiple choice option. Without actively avoiding him, I haven't seen any of the Rock's movies and I have never seen him on TV outside of WWE. And yet I watch a shit ton of TV. The only time I've seen him talked about is as a possible presidential candidate. There are just so many options for entertainment nowadays. Hulk Hogan was a sports and television star in an era of four broadcast channels and about 20 cable channels. Pop culture was largely universal. It's much closer I think then people are saying. I would say the Rock is still probably more famous as a person, but Hulk Hogan is still the first person that comes to mind to most people when they think "wrestler".

Depends on how you look at it. Rock is more famous in general, no question. He's on of the biggest movie stars in the world.
Hogan is still synonymous with wrestling. If a tv show, commercial, whatever is going to do a parody of homage of a wrestler, they're probably always going to be in the Hogan mode.
Rock is the far bigger name in every other facet. Hogan is always going to be the archetype for 'wrestling' in people's minds.

Yea, but Hogan is more famous for being a wrestler than Rock. Rock is just more famous is general. Rock might be the most famous man in Hollywood now.

What's really interesting will be that there are people familiar with both that won't know that Hogan and Rock ever wrestled each other.

Like alot of people have said, The Rock is hands down more famous but that's due to his acting career. I guarantee you there are people who don't even realize that Dwayne Johnston used to be a wrestler. The person more famous for being a wrestler? Definitely Hogan

I honestly, think at this point it is a generational thing. Younger people would say The Rock, older would say Hogan. Really young may say Cena.

No. Hulk Hogan was responsible for two separate boom periods in wrestling in two separate decades, for two separate companies. The man brought wrestling into the mainstream twice. Not even the Rock has done that

When it comes down to something like asking a person about who do you remember most from wrestling, the answer will still learn towards Hulk in that regard
Most famous tho is The Rock Dwayne Johnson without doubt, he will probably go down at the most famous person to come from wrestling ever
