Y'all missing the point. No one asked if Hogan was more famous "as a wrestler" than Rock, just if he was the more famous wrestler. And he's not...not by a WIDE margin. Rock is. Period. Doesn't matter about age demographics, doesn't matter which one was bigger in wrestling. None of that matters. Rock is a legitimate WORLDWIDE phenomenon. He's famous in China, a country with 1.5 billion people in it, and a country that wasn't all that familiar with Hogan during his time. That alone is a major separator of the two.

I think Hogan had more of an impact to a bigger audience in the 80s than Rock during the Attitude Era. Hogan was a game changer, he made wrestling mainstream. People know more about what Hogan did in the 80s than what Rock ever did in his movies, esp. cause movies are in a downturn. Being a movie star now is not what it was in the 80s. That is why guys like Sly and Arnie are still huge in foreign countries.
I would bet you would ask to anybody on the street still now that would know more who Hulk Hogan is than the Rock. Rock is famous, Hogan is like a second Santa Claus. It's funny everytime I talk with people about wrestling, all they know and remember are Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan and Macho Man.

Asking this question is a bit like asking in 1995 if Michael Jackson is more famous than Elvis Presley. Absolutely nailed it.

Not only has he surpassed Hogan, it's really not even close. To the older section, maybe Hogan is more well known, but Rock is literally one of the biggest movie stars on the planet. He's a huge part of the modern mainstream. He's reached a level pretty much no pro-wrestler ever has reached or likely ever will again.

Yes. You have to figure Hogan hasn't been a crazy popular wrestler for almost 20 years. The Rock was huge when he left wrestling, then was known as "that wrestler who does movies" for most of the 2000's. Now, he's a legitimately huge megastar in movies. It'a not just that he's more famous than Hogan because of movies, but an entire generation of people has grown up knowing him as being synonymous with wrestling whether he was doing it or not, while Hogan had a sex tape and was on TNA and had the Gawker business and the N word debacle. The weight of Hogan's name resonnates with me because I'm 31 and remember when he was a big star, but if you ask someone who is under 25 to name a wrestler, I think it's Rock or Cena. Hogan is dated, and probably isn't in wrestling enough to even be all that famous for that right now.

Most famous wrestler: Hogan Most famous person: The Rock
At this point, The Rock is more associate with his movie career then his wresting career. People know that The Rock is a wrestler but it isn't the first thing that people think of when they think of The Rock.

On the flip side, Hulk Hogan was more recognisable than you would believe. I went to school with the son of the Chinese consulate. The kid was very much into his studies and had no friends. He wasn't interested in pop culture and had never heard of Star Trek, Michael Jackson or most Western pop culture. I asked him if he had heard of Hulk Hogan and his face lit up and he acknowledged him, "The wrestler in yellow, I know him". The only other Western figure he recognised was then president Clinton. I have also seen Hulk Hogan being recognised in the remotest of places - such as a village in the Samburu reserve in East Africa. That's just my observations from my life experiences. I couldn't tell you of the scale of recognition or if the villagers have heard of the Rock.

Well I reckon that the general public would still recognise the name Hulk Hogan as a wrestler over Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, in most countries around the the world.

People know that The Rock is a wrestler but it isn't the first thing that people think of when they think of The Rock. To be fair, the first thing I think of about the Rock is gym junkie. My picture of him in mind is Rock with his earphones, sweatshirt and lifting an obscene amount of weight.

In terms of mainstream exposure, I don't see how anyone could argue The Rock is not the biggest professional wrestling star ever, and it's not even close

I think Hogan was more famous for his movie career. I haven't read the thread but I assume everyone agrees with me.

The Rock not only easily surpasses Hogan's fame, but I'd be willing to bet if you asked the average wrestling fan under 35 or so to think of a wrestler, more would answer John Cena first before Hulk Hogan.

Yep, a lot depends on the age thing. Muhammad Ali was probably the most recognizable athlete in sports' history, yet, if you ask someone today to name any boxer, the answer will vary from Floyd to Tyson to Ali. Just depends on the age group.
