To the average person, Hulk Hogan is probably considered 80s kitsch, in the same catagory as Mr. T or David Hasselhoff. Whereas Dwayne Johnson is a legit star.

I would not at all be surprised if there were die-hard Dwayne Johnson fans who had no idea he was ever a wrestler. The newer generation...of course

Rock is more famous outside of wrestling, by a wide margin.
But Hogan and Austin are probably bigger stars as pro wrestlers.

But did the Rock ever own his own pasta resteraunt? CASE CLOSED! (serious answer... I'd probably roll with what seems to be majority. Hogan is more famous AS A WRESTLER, but Rock is just way more famous overall.)

No. Because Hogan is still known as a wrestler first and foremost. Rock is now an actor who had a good wrestling career many years ago. Hogan however was the catalyst for the two most historic boom periods in wrestling history. Rocks accomplishments in the ring are impressive but not on the level of Hogans Be careful with the Rock here. I know hating Hogan is fashionable and while Rock has had a more successful Hollywood career....he's not exactly Brando and Gregory Peck. His movie career is littered with unwatchable's (fast and furious, Tooth Fairy, Baywatch) The only debate if there is one is the wrestling careers and that is hard to debate. We all know the Rock is the biggest wrestler turn movie star in history. He has out done every wrestler to star in a movie. Is the Rock known more now as the actor than a wrestler? Debatable but likely yes since he been away so long. Yes Hogan in wrestling had a huge role in two of the biggest boom periods in wrestling heading the Rock and wrestling era in the late 80s and the NWO late 90s. The Rock did in the late 90s and 00s and both had career success that are very compare able. The Rock did a lot of what Hogan did in the 90s in the 00s. Both did SNL, both started there movie role. When Austin went down. Rock was the #1 guy and was EVERYWHERE much like Hogan. The big different that Hogan gets in Hogan had a longer run as that guy and was the clear guy while Rock battled that spot with Austin in the wrestling world. The biggest note is Rock proven even just as appearances boost a show. 03/04 when he was making just promo appearances. One time they announced he was going to be there, show sold out just that fast. Hogan is the only other guy who could do that I think. What makes the Rock bigger now, is Hogan's image took a monster blow with the scandal and he still not recovered from it. Rock still seen as this mega superstar. Hogan isn't what he was because of the scandal. It's one of those things when the Rock is in his 60s. Like Hogan is now, where will he be in the eyes of world? We can't take away from what Hogan as done but The Rock could pass him in time only if he still connects at all with wrestling.

If it wasn't for Hogan in those formative years, there would be no Rock as there may have not been a WWE. Remember, Wrestlemania 1 was make or break for Vince McMahon. All eggs in one basket.
I doubt CFL player Dwayne Johnson would have had any exposure as he did on WWE TV.

Case in point: without Sammartino, there probably wouldn’t have been a company for Vince to buy and take to the next level; ergo, without Vince’s marketing brilliance Hogan likely wouldn’t have hit the peaks he did. Big a star as Bruno was for his time, nobody’s arguing he was more famous than Hogan just because he paved the way.

Plus so many damn people have had sex tape controversies that I don't think it has a real lasting effect.

WWE still brought him back so that says something and was still around making media appearances but than the comments came out and than became blackballed. So yes it did have a lasting effect. May not been the sex tape itself but what was said on the tape.

Not even close. Hogan was absolutely ubiquitous in the 80s.
I don't think there are any celebrities of today who have the same level of fame that people like Arnold Schwarzenegger or John Wayne had in the past.
