Absolutely Bagwell did. I was only a kid but I loved Buff as a kid, he was likeable even though he was an absolute sleezeball. This will almost definitely be repeated in this thread, but his heel turn after returning from his injury really killed him - I think he could have had a DDP style rise to the main event.
Then he became bloated and a lot slower. I think his legacy is shat on a lot because of his WWF performance and alleged attitude.

No
He went as far as he could go.
Still a good career though. I always liked him.

He could have been a guy who was a fill-in guy for a couple of WCW Main Events here and there, but I don't think he could have been The #1 Top Guy.

Don't think so. Upper midcard was as far as he could get. Buff had a limited moveset, was too obnoxious to be a good face and had a bit of an attitude problem backstage.

He could have been a decent IC level guy. He had charisma and was passable in the ring, but a TOP guy? No, there was a looooooong line of talent ahead of him for that spot.

I'd like to replay Bagwell's career but this time have him turn face after returning from injury. The nWo were just such huge heels that another heel, especially as part of the group, was never going to be the top guy over them. Fans were clamoring for a red hot babyface though to take them out and I don't see why Bagwell couldn't have been that guy.
He may never have been a top guy like Steve Austin, Rock, or Hogan but he could've been at the Jericho, Benoit, Guerrero, level where he could hold the title believably and move between the upper mid card and main event.

Buff was upper mid card at best with the occasional world title match on tv. MARCUS Bagwell had potential to be a transitional champ.

He looked the part, but he was never top level. I saw him more of a Rick Martel, Tatanka or Val Venis IC type mid level star.

For as much as a jackass as he was/is, Bagwell kinda gets a raw deal from people. The guy was really over for a while and was a good hand in the ring. WCW had 2 chances to make him a star and royally f***ed both of them up 98 ways to Sunday.
Could he have been a megastar? No. But a top 3 babyface with an occasional title shot certainly could have been do-able. Hell, they passed the title around like candy in 2000, you're telling me Buff couldn't have had a brief run for a month?

he should've had a US title run at least. 5x tag champ isn't that bad though

I agree, I think he had legs as a face. As a heel he was too much of a sidekick, as a face he came off as someone who could stand on his own two feet and be somebody. I think he was a great weaselly sidekick though, but it definitely feels like every time he teased going babyface there was some charm about him that they never capitalized on.

main event? nah even at his best he wasn't that good. he WAS definitely good enough to be a mainstay in the upper midcard feuding over the US title and being a gatekeeper for guys WCW was testing the waters with. kinda like what Miz is (though Miz deserves another main event run IMO).

Upper midcard on his best day with an occasional World Title match
He plateaus as a IC/US title holder

I agree with US/IC title holder. But no he couldn't have been the guy in either company.

I will forever say the biggest mistake WCW made was turning Bagwell heel when he came back from neck surgery. He had legit sympathy and support that they could’ve capitalised on. Remember when Bagwell came back for a promo to update everyone on how he’s been doing since the surgery and then Hogan came out, tipped Bagwell over in the wheelchair? That got major heat.
He would never have been a megastar but he could’ve had a short Luger type run to give WCW hope before Hogan gets it back again.

No idea. I honestly never cared enough to look into it. Maybe someone else would know.
