Since he will probably have several matches in the year-end top ten, I thought it would be interesting to get everyone's thoughts on which was his best one. I tried to come up with ones that I see in the discussion the most, but if I made a glaring omission, let me know in this thread.

Voted for the Lesnar match. If it wasn't for the completely obvious outcome it would probably be my WWE match of the year so far.
I'm surprised to see the Balor match doing well so far. To me that match felt very much like two guys just taking turns doing moves and never had that high peak of drama that great matches have.

First of all:
Love all those matches.
Second, I give it to the Lesnar match cause watching the match live with friends was a rollercoaster of emotion and made AJ look like a beast, even in defeat.

Biased because I saw it live but AJ/Finn felt like another level compared to the other matches in the poll.

Voted Balor, but this was actually a tough choice. AJ is so damn good, when you look at those opponents(outside of Balor/Cena), you aren't thinking any of those matches would be even close to good.

Don't believe I saw the Ambrose match but of those others, I'll say Balor but it's close between that and Lesnar. Shane match was pretty good, better than it really had any right to be, but I can't claim it's anything special. Cena match blew.

I think the opening of the Lesnar match tainted it too much for me to really enjoy it. It started like every other match with him just dominating AJ and playing with him. By the time it turned into a real match I'd kind of tapped out. I watched it but never really got back into it. That said, I've been done with Lesnar for a while so that likely played a big part in it. That and the fact that I didn't believe for a second that AJ was winning.

The one with Balor was so good it took just ONE MATCH to make Balor feel legit again.
But then Vince's gotta Vince.
If the right person had won at the Rumble, that would've a close second.

I actually do think the right man won at the Rumble, since Cena was due to finally beat AJ. The problem is what they did after that, with the whole Wyatt/Orton crap starting SD's descent into trash for much of this year. Personally I would have just had AJ regain at EC and then have him vs. Orton at WM in some semblance of a respectable match. If Shane must wrestle at all then let him dick around with Wyatt.
Even in a loss the answer here is Cena at the Rumble. The Lesnar match was good for a 2017 Lesnar match but not entirely a MOTYC, while the Balor match needed another 5-7 minutes of wild near falls and crescendo to really be amazing.
How crazy is it that AJ may well have had a mediocre year compared to his 2016? I guess he didn't have to job to Ellsworth this year though, so maybe it balances out. But it's a bit wild to think that he's had those matches yet some stuff like the Owens feud just didn't really click. And sadly not even AJ Styles can carry Baron Corbin to anything decent.

AJ has been a miracle worker. He got Brock to put his working boots on(granted that probably had something to do with Paul E and the WWE), he got a 4 star match out of Shane, flew from South America and had a strong match with Balor, and got something decent out of Jinder
If he goes down anytime soon SDL is going to be in a world of hurt.
I voted for Brock even though we all knew that he was going to win.

I really enjoyed the Jinder match. I think this is my vote. Told a Fantastic in ring story with Jinder being bigger and stronger, so AJ had to rely on his speed and experience, and got to be the conquering hero who defeated the vile villain to win the title. I was chanting “Fight Forever” by the end of the match.

Soooooo tough... Not even overly exaggerating that fact.
My top 3 is this:
3. Shane O'Mac at WrestleMania - This match shouldn't have been good at all. Styles got a lower match on the show than he deserved, but he went out and did his best and produced one of the top matches of the entire night. He took nothing and made it something, and made it gooood!
2. John Cena at Royal Rumble - This is a close-second and I'd have no issue with people putting it first. It had everything you wanted, except for Styles falling short. Yet, when Cena did win, the match was so phenomenal (pun intended) that I didn't care of the result. It was just an all-around 5-star match and that's not to be taken lightly.
1. Finn Balor at TLC - What separates this and the Cena match were the conditions. Taking into account that AJ Styles and Finn Balor had no buildup to the match, had not wrestled one another in their careers, and it was a last-second match to save a dying PPV, the match was stellar. This really saved that PPV. The big headliners was The Shield get together and the Sister Abigail vs Demon Balor match, but when both fell through, AJ Styles came to save the day. AJ Styles was touring overseas and flew back in enough time to fight Finn Balor (and jet-lag). This is what honestly propelled AJ Styles to that next level, of what he was able to do when called upon. This will probably be the defining moment in his career, because I see a major push happening now.

The Balor match is so odd in retrospect. Styles himself has gone on to WWE title glory since then, but Balor himself has just been totally crapped on. Squashed by Kane, did little at Survivor Series, and Joe soundly defeated him. Whenever there's a draft they desperately need to move Balor to SD where he has some guys to actually mix it up against. On Raw he's a 190 lb. dude in the land of big scary men like Strowman, Lesnar, Kane, etc. Balor on SD? Styles, Nakamura, Zayn, even reigniting his NXT feud with Owens. Trade Balor for Corbin.

I like the image of Styles going backstage each week to screams of "MATCH OF THE YEAR", only for AJ to no sell and retort "match of the year....so far."
It does seem somewhat hyperbolic and premature to call Styles "the new HBK" (problematic for 10,000 reasons), but I would say that there's been a HBK shaped hole on the roster for some time and AJ Styles has thus far been very comfortable in plugging it in. That is, a guy that can go anywhere on the show and obviously supply the quality, but also never have his aura called into question.
