Can't freakin' wait! With a renewed interest in old school Power Rangers thanks to the new Hasbro Lightning Collection, and my 20+ years of collecting wrestling figures, I'm really excited for this season! Thank you and up yours for informing me about this collection...my desk at work will never forgive you! Dude, it's awesome! I just started last week. Lord Zedd is unreal.

I think this show is a bit lopsided with its content. There's, like, one girl toy a season and the rest are all boy toys. Which is fine, generally, but those aren't the toys I had as a kid so I have no real interest in watching the show, which is a shame. I get the reasoning, though. If you look at the current boom in adult action figure collectors (The primary audience who will watch a show like this), it's mostly stuff like Star Wars, Marvel, Transformers, MOTU, TMNT, etc. that they collect. If they want enough views to keep getting seasons, that's the type of lines they have to focus on. You're sort of looking at it through the lens of a male, though (which: naturally). Toys are more than just figures; there are plenty of toys that girls would be interested in and even look to collect. Also, highlighting something could help renew interest in a toy for collectors. Don't get me wrong; I understand the reasoning behind the male ones. But I didn't bother watching the show at all because there was nothing for me in it, even though it's theoretically up my alley. It could stand to be a little more balanced, imo.

When I go to a toy show, it's typically tons of the stereotypical nerdy dudes, but there are obviously people of every gender. Even still, the vast majority of the toys that are in demand are the "male" (really hate gendering toys) toys, even with female collectors. Because they don't see Star Wars or TMNT as "male". They just like it. You could feature a lot more girl lines, but it would mostly just entertain nostalgia for a demographic that by and large doesn't care about toys anymore and certainly won't watch a whole show about them. I guess what I'm trying to say is, they don't seem to be focusing on gender but rather focusing on lines that have remained so popular that companies like Bandai, Hot Toys, Mezco, NECA, and Hasbro are making a killing making high end versions of those same lines and characters 30 years later.

I know what you mean about gendering toys, but for the sake of ease, you know? Nothing wrong with a dude who collects Barbie, but generally speaking, Barbie's a toy aimed at females. I want to be clear that I understand what you're saying - sincerely, please realize that - but I want to say from my personal vantage point: Talking strictly taking anything about Netflix and renewals and yadda yadda yadda out of it... I'm a female (obviously) and I enjoy toy nostalgia. But nothing on the show makes me want to tune in, because outside of Barbie, nothing was anything I played with as a kid. I think Cabbage Patch Dolls are creepy, but I had one and would like to see a thing on it, since it's representative of toys from my time. Cabbage Patch Dolls also aren't obscure and have endured as a collectible line. The way the seasons are now, they get four episodes and three are toys directed predominantly towards males, so something I would be interested in would pop up... when? I didn't feel like the show took someone like me into consideration when it would have been fairly easy to. Like, I literally didn't bother watching, but I would have if I didn't feel like the show hadn't bothered to cover anything I'm interested in. Technically, they don't have to but how hard is it to do two episodes where the stuff is something like GI Joe and Transformers and the other two are Barbie and Cabbage Patch Dolls? I'm not demanding a series takeover, I'm just sort of disappointed that the representation isn't balanced.

I'm the kind of dude who would watch it all. I honestly loved the Barbie episode. I think it's like I said though, where they're just trying to plow through all the super nerdy lines because it'll get the most views. There are some good YouTube channels out there for toy retrospectives, but you'll find about the same content ratio unfortunately. If I ever find a good one though I'd be glad to link you. 👍🏻

Anything 80s and early 90s is my youth, but I find 70s stuff really interesting as well (for a reason I have no clue of haha). Look at us, bridging the toy nostalgia gap.

On the subject of more “female” aimed toys I wouldn’t actually mind episodes over Cabbage Patch Dolls(do you remember the freaking pandemonium those creepy bastards caused?!) or I dunno, the Easy-Bake Oven, hell even the Ty Beanie Babies would be interesting.

To be honest, I'm surprised they haven't done Cabbage Patch yet. Some girls lines that should be no-brainers would be: Barbie My Little Pony Cabbage Patch Dolls Popples Littlest Pet Shop Beanie Babies Jem Polly Pocket And of those, just a couple have been done. So, there is material to pull from.

They HAVE to do Beanie Babies. Those were ungodly huge for awhile. I remember going to garage sales and using my allowance to buy them, and asking for the retired ones for my birthday and stuff. A lot of kids collected Beanie Babies, and with a lot of crossover appeal to girls, that should be a no-brainer.
They can do Polly Pocket and Mighty Max in one combined episode, too.

Like the Barbie and Hello Kitty eps didn't seem like something I'd be interested in, but the history was compelling enough for me.

Plus, He-man is for everyone. He's the most powerful man in the universe. Female type people are in the universe, ipso facto He-man is for everyone.

Even if you don't count the She-Ra characters, there was the Sorceress, Teela, Queen Marlena, Evil-Lynn, etc. And while we are on the subject of "boy toys" with strong female characters, shout out to G.I. Joe.

I worked at McDonalds the second year they did Beanie Babies. That was so awful. People freaking out over not getting them all. Lines out the door. All for nothing as they're worthless.

People didn't learn from trading cards and comic books just a few years earlier. Stuff is valuable because it's rare, and artificial scarcity (in Beanie Babies case) doesn't make something valuable. Best thing about Beanie Babies is they gave us the running joke in Reba of Barbara Jean collecting them.

Just watched it.
They made a condensed version of wrestling history. I felt like the episode did a serviceable job talking about the twists and turns of wrestling history with some behind-the-scenes bits of what was going on at LJN/Galoob/Remco/OSFTM/Jakks. I enjoyed hearing about what happened to LJN and the rarer black card series of Wrestling Superstars. That stuff was cool and fitting for this documentary. There is probably a ton of great b-roll footage from the interviews with Jon (who had interesting things to say) & Jeremy (who is integral in bringing legends back into market) but they got pushed to the sidelines by the obnoxious cutesy editing style to revert to MORE wrestling footage and more of this god awful "Jewish Lightning" story nobody asked for. I bet if you do an alternative cut of this with footage they already have, it could be much improved. Also, not interviewing Bill was a massive oversight. He and the Mattel team revolutionized wrestling figures as a whole, and that deserved much more focus.
You don't gloss over BCA as "garbage" and then wax poetic about OSFTM. f*** off with that. They tried to pretend that TTLs were this massive improvement when the reality is everyone hated TTLs until RealScan. That should've been covered, Jakks' ahead-of-its-time R3 line should've been at least discussed. But no, we have to revert to more wrestling footage, more bad comedy, more Jewish Lightning. I appreciate that they decided to make an episode about wrestling toys, but the direction of this was way off. More Jon, more Jeremy, Bill should've been involved, Ryder should've been involved...I really don't mean to be such a downer, I just wanted this to be a comprehensive look at the figures and the stories of how the lines came to be.
I guess I have to do it...
