I imagine that if he does come through Impact, it's not likely going to be long term, both because I don't think they could afford him and since I think he likes to be free to do whatever he wants.

It's a total Impact thing to do, so it makes sense. He's a big name who was a huge draw for a long time, who's body is now held together with bubble gum. They'll bring him in, make him the top guy, feed every homegrown talent they have left to him, so expect him to 619 Abyss into barbed wire. Then they will have the "dream match" where Alberto Del Pain in the ass comes back and beats Mysterio, but they'll do it in a tiny building in Canada instead of, say, Mexico where it would draw money, and Mysterio will do the job.

Guess they agreed to hire his son too, then.
Wasn't the reason he turned down the WWE offer that they refused to hire Dominick?

they'll push him hard while he's under a handshake deal then he'll go to WWE & they'll have a tournament when his title is vacated

The reason he wanted to get back into WWE was so he can get his son into developmental Idk if they said no outright to his son but they had no real interest in Mysterio from what I remember

Is there really that much "homegrown talent" left in Impact left to protect, though? Eli Drake is about the only person I can think of, and his losing to Mysterio isn't really going to be as disastrous as AJ losing to RVD, or Joe to Angle, as Impact really doesn't have much of an identity left to protect at this point. They pretty much are going to have to rebuild their roster from the ground up, and Rey Mysterio is still a name that's going to draw more interest than a lot of the former WWE midcarers floating around the Indy universe.

An immediate title run before his 3rd match when his knees blow out.

For what it's worth, Mike Johnson at PWInsider said the same. They never stopped talking after Rey turned down their offer around the last tapings.

Mysterio: No Impact: You coming to wrestle here? Mysterio: No Impact: You coming to wrestle here? Mysterio: No 6 months later...... Impact: You coming to wre.......... Mysterio: If I say yes will you leave me alone Impact: Sure

Honestly given Impact’s options he wouldn’t be the worst person to sign. Just don’t throw money at him. The new owners and execs have to try to be realistic here and not fall back to Dixie era craziness with wasting huge money just to say they have a guy.
Sign him to a limited schedule with a lot of freedom for a low enough amount and merchandise the crap out of him. Use connections with AAA and the Crash to help pay for him/get him more regular exposure if at all possible.

Makes more sense than him going to WWE again. going from how refreshed he looked in LU I think it was mostly the schedule that was kicking his knees in the ass.

I'm looking for the match where Mysterio's legs fly off when he tries to kick a prone opponent & then turns heel because.

Meh Rey still wants to be a megastar until his legs fall off at the knees.
TNA will let him do that. They're welcome to each other.

That’s the key part of all this and something I have said for a while. 95% of the Impact roster are people who do way more indie dates a year and have commitments to other places than they do Impact and the only real thing Impact offers is more TV. That’s it. Like, I know we have running gags about people being desperate about going to TNA because they have nothing else but right now it’s the opposite. TNA needs them because if they all went, the roster would just be Abyss, Josh Matthews and Kongo Kong.
