When The Truth Commission started in WWF, they had a manager named The Commandant. He was an actor who'd never trained to bump, and he got replaced in favor of The Jackyl after about half a year because WWF wanted someone who could get physically involved in the manager role.

Didn't Arnold Skaaland manage late in his career? Can't imagine he bumped.

Those who stopped taking bumps at a certain point in time, it was almost always due to injuries that prohibited it. I've heard complaints on some podcasts lately that I'll totally agree with about how Gary Hart not bumping for Ric Flair made me think Gary Hart was one of the worst managers ever at the time, in an era when Cornette, Heenan, Jimmy Hart, etc. were bouncing all over the place when babyfaces would get their hands on them. I now know why he didn't bump (due to his physical condition). But if that was the case, he never should have been touched. It only hurt the match when main eventers would hit him, and he'd just stand there and no sell. Just made everyone look foolish. And to make matters worse, Gary would physically attack the face wrestlers at times too. So not only did they have this manager who was (sometimes) bigger than his client attacking the opponents, but he couldn't bump and half-no-sold any repercussions. Didn't Arnold Skaaland manage late in his career? Can't imagine he bumped. Pretty sure he bumped while managing Bruno and Backlund. Some of their feuds started or escalated after a heel targeted Arnold. Granted, we're talking taking a "punch" here and there not a death valley driver or the like. Catfights with Dawn Marie in ECW, I believe.

Maybe a cop out but I don't recall Ms. Elizabeth ever taking a bump. And really Paul Bearer never took bumps for a while.

I don't remember Mr Fuji taking many bumps once he was managing in WWF. Fuji is strange in that I don't remember him taking bumps as a manager, but then he'd work a match. Exactly what I was going to say. He'd get punched every once in a while, but no real bumps, except for Demolition slamming him on the floor at Survivor Series that year. But he'd be in six-man tags and handicap matches periodically.

Am I imagining that Honky Tonk Man hit Elizabeth too at one point? He shoved her to the ground when she was trying step between him and a bound-by-Harts Savage.

Back in the day in Capitol/WWWF in the days before the managers stayed ringside I'd think bumping would be a rarity. Did the Grand Wizard ever take bumps? Jim Cornette was talking about Skandor Akbar recently talking about he couldn't really bump for most guys because he was bigger than they were and all the fans remembered him from being a bad ass wrestler. Grand Wizard was the one that popped to mind for me as well.

A good spot that I could see being done, but which I don't think I've seen done, would be a manager or valet either reaching into the ring or trying to grab the bottom rope, to trip a guy up or distract or make a rope break harder. I've never seen a face counter by stomping on the hand or by standing on it. I think it'd be a fun visual if you could safely manage it, and it's a good comeuppance spot that people who can't back bump could do. (Bad back or neck, old, or in the case of valets, in a skirt and not trying to get a lecher pop.)

Very interesting first post! You might have identified the one manager who didn't bump ever!
