Anybody got some good examples of managers who never took bumps? Feels like a requirement for a manager anymore is to be beaten up by faces to taunt the heels, and I feel like most wrestling schools seem to expect anyone who wants to become a manager to take the same sort of training as the wrestlers, which almost seems like defeating the purpose of having a manager be a manager.

I really doubt you'll find one. It's pretty much their point in life: Talk shit, cause distractions, and take an ass whipping while your man recovers enough to take advantage of the distraction.

Back in the day in Capitol/WWWF in the days before the managers stayed ringside I'd think bumping would be a rarity. Did the Grand Wizard ever take bumps? Jim Cornette was talking about Skandor Akbar recently talking about he couldn't really bump for most guys because he was bigger than they were and all the fans remembered him from being a bad ass wrestler.

Maybe a cop out but I don't recall Ms. Elizabeth ever taking a bump. And really Paul Bearer never took bumps for a while.

Blassie didn't take many due to his age.
Gary Hart didn't take many due to all the injuries he sustained in the plane crash. He'd take a shot and stumble along the ropes, etc., but rarely took a full bump.
Plus he was bigger than a lot of the guys.
Other than that, it's hard to say. And even if they didn't get bumped around, guys like Sir Clements and Gentleman Saul Weingeroff would still end up being embarrassed in some way.

I may be mistaken, but don't think Ted DiBiase ever took a bump as a manager. He'd get punched or grabbed by the jacket, but I have no memories of him ever actually bumping. Perhaps because of his neck injury.

I'm sure it's just because I only saw him super-late into his career, but I don't recall ever seeing Oliver Humperdink take bumps.

Akbar took bumps all the time, though. Duggan routinely took him to the cleaners in that regard. He stopped doing them as he moved from World Class/UWF into the Global era due to his knees, though.

Gary Hart barely sold anything.
More recently Truth Martini admits that he can't bump anymore because of injuries but he tries to work around it.

He took a metric crap-ton of tombstones from the Undertaker. Something like 40 of them in the 1992 results over at thehistoryofwwe.com, most of them after house show matches where UT beat one of Fuji's guys. A few of them were with him as an active participant in handicap matches versus UT, but most of them were after-the-match things as a manager.

All the time. Believe it or not, he supposedly tried to start as a wrestler and transitioned into a manager quickly (I'm assuming because he better fit the part). Even had a singles match or two as Slick in the WWF. And have to remember a powerslam from Davey Boy is what sent him away as a heel to return as babyface Reverend Slick.

Maybe a cop out but I don't recall Ms. Elizabeth ever taking a bump. And really Paul Bearer never took bumps for a while. He did plenty of times. Most comment was punching him off the apron to steal the urn and hit taker with it. Hogan did it at Tuesday in Texas in 91, and hell I'm sure Warrior hit him before in the feud. Mister Hughes laid him out in 93 to get the urn which lead to his Summer slam 93 return. He was knocked out again in 94 at the Rumble. He did wrestle in World Class so more than able. 95 WM again attacked for Kama to get the urn. 96 and beyond all the stuff with Taker, Mankind and ext.

Those who stopped taking bumps at a certain point in time, it was almost always due to injuries that prohibited it.
I've heard complaints on some podcasts lately that I'll totally agree with about how Gary Hart not bumping for Ric Flair made me think Gary Hart was one of the worst managers ever at the time, in an era when Cornette, Heenan, Jimmy Hart, etc. were bouncing all over the place when babyfaces would get their hands on them. I now know why he didn't bump (due to his physical condition). But if that was the case, he never should have been touched. It only hurt the match when main eventers would hit him, and he'd just stand there and no sell. Just made everyone look foolish.
