I'm watching Slamboree 97 and we have no fewer than 3 (and 2 of them were still active players at the time) pro football players on the card in Mongo, Reggie White (who faced each other) and Kevin Greene who's in the main event.
Why so many? Was it a result of LT being in the WM 11 main event? Clamouring for mainstream appeal? WCW's roster is so stacked during this time period and we're giving valuable PPV airtime to football players? (And Glacier/Mortis/Wrath/Ernest Miller bullshit but that's a story for another thread)
Although I must admit I f***ing love Mongo. Maybe his success showed others it was a good gig. Though I can't believe NFL teams let their players do this during the offseason.

It's all about that mainstream coverage.

I will forever maintain that Reggie White vs Mongo was better than it had any right to be.

Mainstream coverage; also being centered in Atlanta so many of the wrestlers/players would cross paths at the gym.

I always thought Kevin Greene was a pretty good wrestler.

Wrestling has always attracted a lot of former football players going back to the 1930s-1940 so there has always been that link between the sports. As others have said it was also about getting more mainstream coverage and drawing in football fans who weren't wrestling fans and expanding WCw audience.

Maybe they also hopped after a match, those players would retire and go the Mongo root to become full time wrestlers down the line. Since a lot of wrestlers where football players in the pass that where well known Pro guys but a lot of top level college players(See Ron Simmions), maybe they where hoping to get more bigger named players to turn into it. Having names like Kevin Greene or Reggie White on a card would draw a lot of non wrestling fans interest that watch NFL.

they tried to get as many Sportscenter moments as possible. I didn't mind that as much as when they had Jay Leno, David Arquette etc wrestle

Even though they weren't much in the ring, I liked Mongo and Greene's enthusiasm for wrestling.

WCW also had Karl Malone and Dennis Rodman in a main event and Jay Leno I think the month after. I'm sure that got a lot of people who may not be fans to want to buy the PPV. Families who didn't get PPVs regularly may be more inclined to get those particular PPVs if a big name athlete or entertainer is on the show. I could be wrong but I think WWF's history has seen more NFL guys than WCW with the WrestleMania 2 battle royal and the WrestleMania 11 corner-men for Lawrence Taylor. And don't forget Art Donovan!

Idt we'll ever see current NFL players work matches ever again. Imagine had Reggie White got injured during that Mongo match.

"Ace, ya got any more of that gum?" "Thats none of your damn business and I'll thank you to stay out of my personal affairs" Haha, love that movie. Anyway, Lesnar only played 3 preseason games for the Vikings, so it doesn't really count. His NFL "career" was like 33 days.
