Just something I wondered reading the Apu thread, when someone asked for the opinion of board members who identify as Indian. It made me wonder what kind of cross-section of people we have here.
I'm not really sure of the correct way to phrase the question, but how do you identify ethnically/culturally/nationally?
I'll start the ball rolling with a fairly dull answer; I'm Caucasian (European Australian is the technical term I think), primarily of British descent but with a few other countries thrown in, and some Aboriginals in the family tree.

My mom's family emigrated from Great Britain to Massachusetts colony in the 1630s and my dad's family emmgrated from Prussia in the 1870s. I've heard I have Irish, Native American, Dutch, and other backgrounds on my family tree.
I'm a mutt like most white-ish Americans. I don't identify as anything. I'm just a man.

Seriously though, I don't think about it much but I'm majority Polish descent. Later in life my grandma said we weren't actually Polish, but Ukranian. It was the first my dad heard of it. Haven't found confirmation of that, though one ancestor did have the name Sobczynski written alternatively with what I think was a Ukrainian suffix, but it was a handwritten census report and those are often hard to read and spellings are all over the place. My grandma also claimed that our name was changed from "Ruff" to our current Polish sounding last name, because they were only hiring Polish workers at the Detroit auto plants. I have sadly not found any confirmation of this in my genealogical research. I want to believe. 23 and Me results European 100% Eastern European 80.5% Balkan 4.2% French & German 2.3% Broadly Northwestern European 4.8% Broadly European 4.6% Broadly Southern European 3.6%

Wacky hermit living in the woods and streams in a very strange pocket of Iowa that nobody knows about.
I'm a mutt. If you forced my hand to declare something my highest % is German. And it appears to be of the Wacky German variety.

My family history has been pretty well documented over time but I did the ancestry DNA test and it confirmed everything I guess with great precision.
English Irish Scottish French Indigenous American
I'm basically a predominantly white guy from America.

From what I can tell from the ancestry free trial I did, I could have things back to England on my dad's side and Germany on my mom's side, via Pennsylvania and hillbilly Kentucky.
Can you really "identify" as a different ethnicity than you actually are? My guess would be no (see Rachel Dolezal).

It makes it seem like if you thought you were Irish but it turns out you are German, it gives you an obligation to start wearing lederhosen.

There's a long chain of random Eastern European nationalities, but thanks to my surname I just say Russian.
Also weird fact: My mother's parents fled Hungary to the UK in the 1956 Uprising, my father's family escaped Soviet Russia in 1991 during the August Coup.
