I'm sorry. I just get really annoyed with these "It's so HARD to be a Cena fan" thread. No it isn't. It is not hard to be a John Cena fan. Your guy is on top over everyone else at all times. From 2005 till 2011 your guy was put above everyone at all times at the expense of LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE. No one else deserves a turn to see anything different? C'mon now. It depends. At that time, I'm sure plenty of Cena fans were berated, if not harassed, on the Internet and at events.

The aftermath was a sad, difficult experience for me. I thought there’s no way they can screw up such a huge, obvious angle. There was almost no work to do. Punk stays home, fake crashes WWE events, eventually comes back to challenge the “new” champion. They blew their load in two weeks. In response... people on this board and around the internet were bitching that Punk wasn't on the raw after. People kinda demanded Punk come back so quickly... not to mention from WWE's stance you let Punk off tv you risk him cooling down. (granted they botched it horribly with Punk there... but Punk remained over with the crowd despite it.)

I feel you guys are getting the wrong idea of what I'm trying to express with this thread. There's no anger here.
Being a Cena fan is pretty easy, as it would be supporting any consistently pushed wrestler. I'm a fan of so many wrestlers, different kinds, I adore the art of professional wrestling. Cena's just one of too many wrestlers I mark for to count.
I'm simply looking back at how invested I was in that event. I never said the show sucked.

I just hate all the feuds which basically devolve into Wrestler A saying Cena is a shit wrestler. Triple H did it. Punk did it. Bryan did it. Owens did it. AJ did it. It's too meta for me. Like, in the fictional world of WWE, how is Cena a shit wrestler? He won all the time and held so many titles. It's stupid, lazy writing.
That being said, I did rejoice in Cena losing. I found him to be unbearable back then. Now that we've had 4 years of this Roman Reigns push though, Cena doesn't seem that bad. At least he's charismatic and can cut amazing promos. Reigns is a plank of wood.

The appeal of that storyline was the possibility of Punk taking the title out of WWE. I didn't give two shits about Punk not getting what he thought he deserved from the company because he's too obnoxious and anti social to sympathise with. But they undermined it entirely by simply creating a new belt and givng it back to Cena, making the whole thing pointless. It was doomed from that moment on.

Heck, even with the stuff about him being in Vince’s pocket, he said he respected the guy and what he achieved but he didn’t like the fact he was the guy on top and he should be. The only real thing he called him out on was for being an underdog when he was obviously the man in the company and hey, he wasn’t wrong. It’s what made the feud really compelling for me, both sides had a strong point, Punk just had the one that resonated with me more. Also I share everyone else’s sentiment that MITB 2011 was a damn good PPV. Probably one of the best the company had this decade with a main event very few have come close to.

Money in the Bank 2011 was a great show. But the aftermath of the whole thing was a massive trainwreck.
I've said before, the tournament to crown a new champion should've went all the way to SummerSlam, let Cena win it again, and then have Punk return at the end of SummerSlam. Then they could do the unification match at Night of Champions. Hell, you could've extended Punk's absence until Night of Champions. Just have everyone questioning the legitimacy of Cena's (or whoever wins the tournament) reign. "You won the title, but you didn't beat the champion for it."
Instead, we get the stupidity of Nash texting himself to "stick the winner," we get the walkout ("Hunter, we're girls"), and the stupidity of Triple H beating CM Punk for no goddamn reason.

I’ve always been a Cena fan, but I knew that at this time it was right for Punk to go over and I was a huge mark for him at the time as well with his rebellious persona. Cena nowadays I feel like is being misused but that’s a different conversation for a different thread

Basically how I feel when people dog on Punk for not liking doing autographs lol. Some people take their dislike of a performer too seriously.

I just think about that pop when Punk’s theme. Stuff like that is what makes something unforgettable.

Some people take their dislike of a performer too seriously. Some people also take their liking of a performer too seriously. Taking pro wrestling too seriously in almost any way is pretty ridiculous in itself. It's Opera, except instead of singing and dancing, people pretend to hit each other and bleed real blood. If anything sums up the absurdity of it more than that, I'd like to hear it.

The fact that it isn't, and they had to open up years later as if speaking to a therapist, is depressing. I THINK I had a back in forth with someone online a few months back, but I don't remember their name, the topic or anything said, because none of this matters.

I relate. I'd left the forum by that stage but I think you and I were (are) the biggest Cena fans in this community. The story of the match was great for the most part. The venom against him was not.
Notable too that Punk's two best WWE matches were vs Cena by a wide margin.

Notable too that Punk's two best WWE matches were vs Cena by a wide margin. I'm not sure if both of them were against Cena but a case can be made for that. His matches against Lesnar & Undertaker in 2013 must both be up there. As much as the Punk Cena feud divided the fan base a bit and I'm sure Punk wanted Cena's spot as the top guy it's at least encouraging to know that both were friends and got on well. A lot of venom was levelled at Cena's character and that's it. His character he plays on a show. May be the same name but it's still a character on a show. I'm sure a lot of people that give Cena hell and did do back then would happily sit down with a drink with him. I know I would.
