So, um, as someone who has been out of the loop, how is there a rise of Skywalker, per se? Since, as last I looked, there's a good deal less of them. It's like Homer Simpson's BBBQ, where the extra "B" is for BYOBB.

I loved TLJ, Im pretty disappointed that they caved in to the whacko youtubers for this movie. TLJ setup the end in an interesting way but instead they destroyed all of that for too much fan service

It will most likely be the lowest grossing of the three, but I imagine that it will still make a boatload of money. Star Wars fandom has survived far worse things than an uneven series, so I can't see this film being the end of it. I think going forward, the focus will be on series and one-off films. Following the Marvel model would probably be the best option. Just get some creative people to put their own spin on the story, give them a few guidelines and then try to stay out of their way. It probably cost a boatload of money too, especially with all of the extensive re-shoots they did. Wouldn't surprise me if a billion is merely the breakeven point. It wouldn't surprise me if TRoS ends up losing money. Though it'll definitely nuke the already anemic merch sales, which will cost Disney more in terms of lost sales (and royalties). Considering all the leaks that were reported by someone broadcasting from the center of the Earth had been proven true, I wouldn't see this film even on someone else's dime. Maybe catch it on cable. MAYBE. I wonder how many copies of TFA and TLJ are suddenly going to make their way to Goodwill or landfills now?

So, not having gone out and done my research yet... {Spoiler}I'm assuming Phasma isn't even mentioned in this entry at all? What a complete waste of a character that was.

It's not a perfect movie, and there were decisions made that I'm not 100% on, but by and large, a far better crafted film than TLJ, and nowhere near as ideologically bankrupt. I'm going to sort through my thoughts before making any big posts, but it gave me a lot of what I felt the previous film was lacking and tied things together as neatly as is probably possible in a series with a mostly absent second act.

They've made it clear they are incapable of writing her without her doing something stupid, like they needed a new Boba Fett but only wanted the incompetence.

This .gif is the whole trilogy in a nutshell Of all the characters who got royally screwed over this trilogy, I'm having a hard time thinking of anyone other than freaking Ackbar. Didn't even get a mourning period or anything, just straight vented while Leia Mary Poppins'd herself back to the ship with no regard for any of the others.

TLJ setup the end in an interesting way but instead they destroyed all of that for too much fan service Johnson turned all potential storylines into creative dead ends and undermined virtually every character in TLJ. Abrams responded to that by ignoring TLJ, overloading on mystery boxes, and throwing everything at the screen. It's what happens when you clumsily improvise a story and have no plan. Online critics of TLJ weren't asking for anything presented in TROS, because most would have realised that there was no saving the creative mess that is the sequel trilogy.

Really the biggest problem I had with Last Jedi was that it didn't really leave the door open for much in the way of interesting stuff in the sequel (though I thought it was fine on its own merits). It feels like this one just decided they didn't need to bother trying to create some organic follow throughs and instead just decided to clumsily ignore and undo it wherever possible.

i haven't seen it yet, but with everything being said i feel this is a valid point.
remember how bad ass Finn looked in The Force Awakes when he had the light saber? i wish he had been the focus of the series, that Finn was the Chosen One. i feel like it would have made for a better movie. we wouldn't have the Canto Bight side story none of the Kylo-Ren relationship John Boyega can do not wrong at this point i just feel it would have made this trilogy a lot better

They should have switched the roles of Finn and Poe, so Boyega plays the hot shot charismatic pilot and Issac plays the hardass liberated ex-stormtrooper.

I’m personally still living in the headspace of the afterglow of TFA and imagining all that could have been.

There are many reasons to ignore/retcon The Last Jedi but I really doubt that is one of them. By 'whacko youtubers' do they mean fans of the original trilogy ? What's the definition here ?

I can't believe Disney's propping up Frozen by paying off critics to badmouth Star Wars.

I imagine the guys who purchased action figures of Rose to destroy on camera and then post it on YouTube would qualify. You know, guys that could probably be considered whacko.

The RLM Mr. Plinkett review cited that they did have an out, in essence, after Kylo offs Snoke where you can end the film on a cliffhanger, leaving filmgoers to wonder for the next few years if Rey joins the First Order, or if Kylo rejects the First Order, and what consequences come from this. I know this plays into the whole "Reylo" shipping crap, but when they're the two biggest characters in the universe, you do have to wonder how they could build off of that, but instead they head into badly choreographed fight dance leading into whatever's left of the Resistance and a good chunk of the First Order wiping each other out in the dumbest ways possible.
