What is the main difference between male and female inmates in regards to violations/discipline issues? In general, less violent, more devious. Contraband and tattooing was also less of an issue. No tattoo guns and rarely any drugs at the state level. But at the county and city level it was nothing but drugs with them. The females also snitched each other like no one's business. It's hilarious how quick they are to snitch, when it can be like pulling teeth with males. In a broader sense, the general difference is that more women are nonviolent offenders, and come from abusive backgrounds. They have very little vocational skills, and that is a big contributor to recidivism. Males have access to welding programs and such, which is one of the few job areas thst doesn't care much about a felony conviction.

Did being a Big Bossman fan (if you are one) play any part in you being a corrections officer?

How many times have you taken prisoners out and raced them?

Did being a Big Bossman fan (if you are one) play any part in you being a corrections officer? Shockingly...no. Like 99.9% of everyone else in corrections, I went into it with the intent of using it as a stepping stone to police. But along the way I found out I was good at, and enjoy it. And if nothing else, I've been doing it so long I probably can't do anything else.

Prisoners actively approach you with bribes to smuggle drugs, or make threats that something bad may happen if you don’t look the other way?

Nah, they pegged me pretty quick as someone that wouldn't bring anything in. The closest I came to the latter, was dirty staff smashing out my friend's wife's windshield as a warning.

Does the job ever get mundane?
Not in the sense that you’re bored or don’t like it, but what I mean is is there a general normalcy about everything on a day-to-day basis in the way there is in an office job?

There are set hard points that must occur every day. Med pass, counts, and meals. They must occur on time, every day. It doesn't matter how many bookings or releases or fights we have, those things must occur. I've come to think that that's what makes a good officer in this environment. One that can adhere to the same routines every day day in and day out, yet not be lulled by them.

Do you ever get frustrated with the system in general or feel angry/depressed that the same problems in regards to the correction of inmates will continue to happen over and over and over again, or do you feel like in the long run the system does work for the majority of those who pass through it?

Is the gang activity bad there? What's the weirdest reason a hit was called on a rival?

This is a bit of a soapbox answer for me. Despite the name, corrections, I don't think it's up to the prison system to rehabilitate people. At least I don't think the success of corrections should be measured, or can be measured, by successfully rehabilitating inmates. Every ten years or so, depending on funding available, society decides it wants its prison system to either rehabilitate inmates, or simply incarcerate them. No other aspect of the criminal justice system has to undergo this identity shift. Corrections is the unchangeable dead end of the entire system. It can't change. Now with that being said, I'm all for vocational and education and treatment options available to inmates. But taking advantage of them and using them is up to the inmate, not me. Their success is entirely up to them, just as their failure is as well. And especially with treatment programs, forcing an inmate to attend and participate is absolutely pointless. They have to want to change, they won't just because a judge ordered them to. At least at the county and city level we don't deal eith that expectation that we correct or rehabilitate them.

This question sounds odd at first but it's something I'm always fascinated about for geographical and cultural reasons: What are the "best" meals you have at the facility?
Also could you give at least the regional location of your facility? I respect your privacy if you wish not too.

In Wyoming, the best meals were usually Mexican food. The pasta is always sickening and slimy. Here in Washington, we get our meals from the WDOC, all prepackaged, etc. Of those meals, I don't know. But I do know the ginger snap cookies are awesome.

After working in prison, knowing the ends and outs, and being familiar with day to day life... Hypothetically, do you think you would be able to handle life as an inmate?

If I were to go in, I would be placed in protective custody due to my status as previous law enforcement. Could I serve my time in PC and make it out, yes.

I was meaning more like do you see it and think “this is the worst thing a human can go through”, or have you thought “hmm this isn’t THAT bad”?
