So I've seen a few of these threads pop up on here from time to time. As there aren't any right now, I thought it would be okay to start my own. So feel free to ask a corrections officer anything...
A little background on me, I've been in corrections since 2009. I've worked state prisons, a county jail, and a city jail. Worked in two different states so far. Worked medium security to max security, both male and female.

Do you carry a big stick? A ball and chain too? Nope. I'm notorious for not carrying anything. No taser or OC.

Have you ever sent anyone to the hospital in self-defense or in defense of one of your brothers or sisters who don the badge?
How do you personally handle someone who is 5150?

Have you ever sent anyone to the hospital in self-defense or in defense of one of your brothers or sisters who don the badge? How do you personally handle someone who is 5150? Hospital, no. I very rarely have to go hands on to gain compliance. That's never been my style. I let my presence and the way I carry myself and treat them do the talking. By 5150, I'm guessing you mean mental. Where in at currently we don't house anyone with mental issues because we don't have any mental health staff, we send them to another facility that does. But in the past I've worked a chronic mental health unit for some time. The biggest thing is patience and consistency.

Did you ever have to work Juvenile Detention? Because that's what my dad did for a number of years when we moved to Wisconsin.

Is sexual abuse among inmates as prevalent as shows and the media make it out to be?

Is sexual abuse among inmates as prevalent as shows and the media make it out to be? I haven't watched any shows about incarceration since I started in 2009, but I'm willing to bet there's a good amount of sensationalization going on. It does go on, and what I've seen the most is inmates successfully going after staff. That was a constant problem at one prison in particular. On average it's more of a problem at a women's facility between inmates, than at a male facility.

Worst injury from a inmate fight you've seen? One guy was beaten into a vegetative state. That's got to be the worst.

What's the weirdest/funniest contraband found during your career? A foot long dildo made from toilet paper. I found it on a guy that the week before got written up for trying to steal a cucumber from the kitchen where he worked. The guy was in a wheelchair.

Are you more power-authority oriented or passive while still maintaining authority? Speaking mainly of dealing with general, non-violent inmates(more on the city/county level, but curious about prison as well.)
I'll follow up with a second question depending on the answer.

If I had to pick between those two options, passive while still maintaining authority. I prefer to be low key, accommodating when I can, and firm when I can't. As the convicts would say, give respect and get respect. They don't need to be reminded they're in jail. And I've had more fights and noncompliant inmates at the county and city level than in prison.
