#178 - Let's Be Cops
Two-thirds of this movie is a fun, silly comedy. The final act goes a bit too far into the serious side of things and it never works as well, causing this to stumble to the ending. [**½]

158. An American Werewolf in London. This really didn’t do much for me. It wasn’t particularly scary or funny. The music really spoiled the mood for me. The makeup was good though. I enjoyed it the most at the beginning when it was the two friends talking back and forth. The last half hour once the transformation happens and afterwards is good. The final act is really awesome with some total chaos and great gore. The last half hour made up for the first hour. I think it’s the first time I’ve ever seen Frank Oz on screen. That was neat. 159. A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: the Dream Child. I’m not a fan of these movies but for some reason this felt like a step backwards in terms or the overall quality. The gore was (thankfully) amped way up from the previous movies so I at least had something to watch. That was all that made me watch this. There was some cool drone music in the dream sequences too.

23. The Cruel Sea - 1950s war documentary about the perils of being a Navy Crew during world war 2. Surprisingly decent despite the occasional drab bits.

65. Men In Black International - I actually didn't mind this, but I think what one of the redeeming qualities was the chemistry between the two leads. Story wasn't that bad, though it could have been executed better on who the real antagonist was. Some of the jokes, however, got chuckles out of me, but not much else.
66. The Marine - Okay, I am doing a Marine marathon, so I started with this. I still have fun with this film, no matter how cheesy and bad it was.
67. The Marine 2 - It had been a while since I had last seen this one, but I didn't mind it. It was definitely a Die Hard/Under Siege-style concept. I didn't mind Ted DiBiase as the lead and he didn't do a bad job. Plus, Temuera Morrison wasn't bad as the villain. Then again, I have seen other films from Roel Reine, as I see them as entertaining time-wasters than anything actually good.

#179 - Murder Mystery
Adam Sandler movies have been terrible for about a decade now. However, this marked a surprising uptick in quality. It the quintessential Netflix film, as it is pretty fun and easy to consume while sitting at home. [***]

160. World War Z. Apparently this was a really popular movie when it came out but I must have been on a bender or something because I’d never heard of it until recently. I have nothing against big budget movies and I like Brad Pitt (who looks terrible, but not because he’s fighting for survival in Armageddon), but once I saw the zombies running I knew it wasn’t what I was looking for. I like my zombies slow and uncoordinated. There was no real reason to care about this movie because no one important dies. I’d have thought at least one of Pitts family members would have died in the first act to get some sort emotional reaction from the audience. This just ends up being a geopolitical thriller with a infected virus backdrop. The troubled production is a more interesting than the movie. Forgive me but when I watch a zombie movie I just want gore and people getting eaten. I guess I’ve watched too much eurotrash this year. 161. Basket Case. This is so goodbad. What won me over was the terrible editing between actors during dialogue. They’re just nanoseconds away from the actors staring into the camera waiting for their cues. Then there’s the acting, which is all top-notch. And the camerawork. And the lighting. The violence and gore are awesome too. I liked this.

I just have the DVD, but the film has gone through quite the transformation since it was released. On another forum I post on a guy mentioned he saw it during its original theatrical run and the film was so beat up looking and had so many scratches he thought it was shot on super 8! With the DVD it was cleaned up so well it looks like a normal movie. I’d love to see how much further the Blu-Ray takes this. It is also nice when B-movies get the special restoration treatment and they manage to look beautiful. Also, the film has two sequels if you can believe that

#180 - Spider-Man 2
It’s the best of the Raimi trilogy, but this is FAR from the holy grail people make it out to be. It has good action and plenty of strong ideas sprinkled in. The supporting characters are atrocious and there’s bad dialogue all over the place. A good, but not great movie. [***½]
#181 - Return of the Jedi
Capping the original trilogy was a tall task after the success of the first two films. This film did it right, with a gloriously exhilarating thrill ride. It gets bookended by two great action sequences. I loved the opening scenes, picking right up where the cliffhanger of Empire ends. The action at Jabba the Hutt’s made for arguably the most exciting start to any Star Wars, including the later films. Combine that with the battle of Endor and Darth Vader vs. Luke Skywalker II and you’ve got a tremendous start and finish to this installment. Like Empire, this had several big plot moments, including Luke and Leia being revealed as twins, as well as more great performances.
There are several issues that keep it from reaching the levels of the first two films. The Yoda/Luke scene and the early Endor sequences both seem to drag on a bit. I also understand the gripes I’ve heard with the Ewoks being a little too cartoony. I get it. Return of the Jedi more than makes up for it with Vader’s redemption story. They waited just long enough to pull the trigger that you think it might not happen. When it finally does, it feels earned. I also found Han Solo’s evolution to hero, while still remaining a scoundrel, to be great. The score was one again one of the best pieces of the film, as John Williams continued to be an unheralded hero of the saga. All in all, while it has flaws that prevent it from being an all-time classic, it remains a fitting conclusion to the original trilogy. [****]

[****] Return of the Jedi is my third favourite of the Star Wars movies but it’s the one that’s suffered the worst from George Lucas’ tinkering. There are times I can’t even watch it. I can’t think of any changes he made that I like. And I’ve only seen the 1997 and 2004 versions. Maybe a later one too because I’ve seen the ending with Hayden Christensen added in. That said, the last “new” scenes I saw were the gang leaving Tattooine during the sandstorm (which was awesome) and Luke building his lightsaber (which gave me an erection). But I don’t own those versions of the movie, I just saw them on YouTube. But I guess there are new scenes I like. The song and dance in Jabbas Palace and the stupid tongue in the Scarlac Pit do me in though.

For me personally though I think a movie this bad shouldn’t be restored on bluray. The grainy, blurry quality adds to the charm. I wish I’d seen it with the quality your friend did.

162. Natura Conto/Cannibal Holocaust II/the Green Inferno. I asked my dad to find me Eli Roth’s sequel to Cannibal Holocaust ‘Green Inferno’ not knowing there was another movie using that title, which was also marketed as a sequel to Cannibal Holocaust. Once I learned that I figured I’d check this out anyway but once it got to the fish trying to swim up the one guides rectum I realized I’d made a bad decision. Then there’s some more violence against animals, lots of male native ass, monkeys, natives that all speak perfect English and after what feels like three days some dude gets castrated by a snake. There’s some light violence at the end, against a blowup doll dressed to look like a man. This is just f***ing terrible. It moves at a lighting pace and before you can figure out what the f*** is happening something else happens that makes you question what the f*** is happening. There’s like six movies worth of ideas in this cut down to ninety minutes with no coherence. WHY THE f*** ARE THEY WATER SKIING ON THE AMAZON RIVER?? WHERE THE HELL DID THESE GUYS COME FROM!? WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT GUY?? WHAT THE f*** AM I WATCHING?? I’ve heard Eli Roth’s ‘Green Inferno’ is terrible but there’s no way it’s worse than this. This may be one of the worst movies I’ve seen in my life. That’s a line that’s thrown around a lot but I really mean it.

You get your traditional buddy cop action comedy here. Bullock and McCarthy have enough fun chemistry to elevate a predictable script. [***]
