Damn it, not a good way to start the new year. Mean Gene was the first announcer I knew by name. RIP to a true icon.

Oh dammit no. One of the true great personalities in wrestling. And I'll say it, as much as I loved him in the WWF, I remember him almost more fondly from WCW - he helped make that product more familiar and comfortable to me as I was starting to branch out and watch other stuff than WWF. RIP Mean Gene. Feel free to take part in as many Brain/Gorilla commentated matches up there as you want now...

Rest in Peace Mean Gene
I will never forget the many ass whippings I received for not listening to you when you told me to ask permission before calling the WCW Hotline.
In all seriousness, he was the greatest backstage interviewer of all time, no one has come even close to his level

I know his son pretty well. He has told me some awesome stories about him. This sucks.

RIP to truly one of the best. I loved the way Gene interacted with the characters he interviewed. He didn’t just stand there and take it. He reacted accordingly, even giving some serious lip service to his interviewees when they did or said something he disagreed with.
Like, could you imagine someone like Todd Grisham or Kevin Kelly saying, “You’re a bonafide sicko, Jake Roberts!”

Gene was the greatest interviewer in the history of wrestling. He carried so many bad talkers through interviews over the years and helped build so many careers.

He seemed like the kind of guy who would always be around, in some capacity. RIP to him, and thanks for the memories.

f***. This hits me just as hard as the passing of Stan Lee. Growing up watching the WWF's Rock 'n' Wrestling era, and later WCW during the Monday Night Wars, Mean Gene was the voice of pro wrestling during my formative years as a fan. I absolutely loved his cadence, his voice, and his ultra dry sarcasm. No one will ever do the job better. Not even close.

My favorite Mean Gene thing is that he's the random spooky narrator for Tombstone: History of The Undertaker

Terrible to hear. Hopefully they have a tribute video to him on Raw, he definitely deserves it. He will. I'd say of any WWE Legend, he probably did the most for the WWE in his "return" years. He hosted a bunch of shows across TV and WWE.com and the Network since 2001, and was at one point a regular public relations face at non-televised (mostly pre-PPV) WWE events around the country. And not to be morbid, but he'll be the 1st celebrity (American definitely) passing of 2019.

Was his last WWE appearance, technically, the Summerslam anniversary doc?

Was his last WWE appearance, technically, the Summerslam anniversary doc? He was the host of WWE Story Time, so I think that would be, right?
