That sounds nothing like a GB movie and more like the plot of every single lifetime channel movie.
Seriously how difficult is it to just adapt extreme ghostbusters....it stays in continuity with the original and evolves them in a fitting way.

I still think that the cast from the 40-Year Old Virgin would have been perfect.
Carrell: Ray Rudd: Peter Rogen: Egon Malco: Winston Mann: Janine Banks: Dana
Apatow could direct. I thought all of those people had great chemistry.

First, Borys Kit of THR revealed over on Twitter that "The main characters will be 4 teens: 2 boys, 2 girls, per sources." And We Got This Covered laid out a few more details regarding the two central characters, a young boy and girl. The young girl will evidently "cross paths with the aforementioned boy at some point in the film and they quickly become friends." She’s 12 years old and "an insanely smart kid. However, she often has a hard time interpreting and expressing emotions and speaks with a flat delivery that makes her observations humorous.” Add to that the site reports that "though she wants to connect with others, she struggles with interpreting how her family and friends feel and has difficulty sharing her own feelings. Her science acumen is said to prove invaluable throughout the story, though." Sounds like Aspergers to me. But I'm not a doctor. As for the other main character, the boy will be 13 years old and is said to be "passionate about fantasy and conspiracy theories. Furthermore, he apparently approaches every situation with unbridled excitement for the unknown" and he "will narrate life in real time, adding descriptive color to the people he meets." As for the plot, the film is said to focus on a family who moves back home to a small town. While there, they begin to learn more about who they are and the secrets of the town itself. ........I wish I could make a gif of an entire Google search page of WTF gifs. This is all a rib, right?

Take the basic idea of Extreme, change it to someone other than Egon as the mentor for obvious reasons, sub out one of the guys for another woman, and you're golden. This isn't hard.

Also, I want more Ecto Cooler. I drank like 40 of them last time, and I'm doing it again. This is where I am at with Ghostbusters. I can live with the movie being Great, Good or shitty. I can't live without MORE ECTOCOOLER

If you have something Ghostbusters you want of your own, why adapt? Heck, if anything an adaptation seems lazier than something original. Legally, the people who created Extreme GB have to get credit and get paid for this movie. If you're a movie company, you probably don't want to do this, because greed; you want more money for yourselves. If they find a way to do Extreme GB, without it being Extreme GB, then the guys who created Extreme GB can probably still come after em, claiming "you ripped off our idea and gave us zero credit/compensation" which could really blow up in Sony's face and cost them even more money.

The money they would have to pay would be a drop in the bucket compared to the money they would make back so I see no issue there And creatively we aren't saying they have to make an exact adaption but take the basic concept which is a concept always used....the old previous mantle holder/'s can no longer be a hero/'s and instead of just retiring is given reason to pass all he knows down to a younger person/team for them to take up the fight. Hell they do not even need to adapt the whole team....use Kylie and Eduardo and swap out the other two for whoever.

Wouldn't that depend on the deal they struck? Creating a sequel to an existing franchise, they could well have done it all work for hire with all the rights going to Sony, which was common practice for licensed cartoons at that point.

as we all know, director Ivan Reitman’s son Jason will be helming the upcoming GHOSTBUSTERS 3 (or whatever they're calling it) and the new movie will go back to the continuity of the first two films. And today we have some more details on just what we can expect to see when the movie lands in Summer 2020. None of this has been confirmed yet, but the info comes from trusted sources so I guess we'll eventually see what shakes out. First, Borys Kit of THR revealed over on Twitter that "The main characters will be 4 teens: 2 boys, 2 girls, per sources." And We Got This Covered laid out a few more details regarding the two central characters, a young boy and girl. If this gets a worse reaction than GB16, I will literally die laughing.

I'm going to, right now, come up with a semi-serviceable plot:
It's been 30 years since last big battle with the OG Ghostbusters. In the intervening time, they have been quietly busting ghosts after agreeing with officials that keeping these things in check and not causing mass panic is for the best.
Their last group bust was in 1991 when they defeated Shandor...but this would be their undoing. As it turns out Shandor was keeping Gozer at bay in his efforts to take Gozers place as a god. Thou unable to directly return to our world due to the portal collapsing, Gozar released a vile demon (insert name) while dealing with this new threat it took all their effort...and Egon.
Fast forward to the present day, almost 30 years have gone by without the Ghostbusters. 4 intrepid young adults and avid ghost hunters host their own youtube show. Haunted hotels, asylums forests, but, They never get much more than some spooky sounds maybe a falling objects.
(We'd learn about the 4 leads here)
One the leads laments, wanting real action. During a live stream, one anonymous person tips the stream with the message [Seek Gozer].
This leads the group to getting, oddly, no hits other than a few conspiracy sites and ghostbuster fan sites. One of the other lead 4 laughs saying that they were just a publicity stunt. Another group member (the weird one trope) insists it happened and claims he knows someone who knows the whereabouts of one of the original Busters, Winston Zeddemore.
Sure enough, he's real. The group is surprised and mentions the name Gozer to which Winston angrily demands they leave, they start to in a dejected fashion when he stops them an apologizes. This is where we get the telling of the backstory from Winston and why the OG Busters split ways.
To shorten this a little; The group learns about where the other Busters are and decides they should revisit their old stomping grounds, Unbeknownst to them Gozer has been leaking more vile spirits waiting to finish off the rest of Busters who banished it. This leads to the group getting chased out of (one of the original locations). With Winston, not home they find plucky Ray Stantz. They recap and Ray being Ray is overly enthused to show them the old firehouse.
He smirks and asks them if they reallywanna bust. We get a short montage of them learning the old gear and new gear Ray has been working on in the hopes that one day the old group might get together again. He fills in for most of the middle of the film.
The finale would be Gozer finally getting free. Ray remarks they need more people and he knows just who. He convinces Winston with a speech about knowing he wants to kick his ass for Egon. They go to Peters home, The moment he opens the door to see 4 new Busters, Winston and Ray in full gear with Ray having a big doofy smile he blankly, slowly, closes the door.
He tries again, This time telling Peter there could be money maybe women, Peter being peter says "Only because I really enjoy being bothers this early in the morning" he turns to the kids and give them some comedic advice "hey little heads up...at some point Gozer might ask if your a god, Say yes, Trust me."
The final battle is the Busters taking on Gozer and (if possible) during this Louis shows up saying "I heard you guys might need some help"
The film would end with Ray saying how fun this was and that he'd love to help the Newly christened Ghostbusters in the future. Peter simply remarks he's going home to have some OJ..maybe a waffle if there's time. Winston says he's happily retired but wishes them well.
We close out on the 4 new Ghostbusters and Ray in the Ecto 1 driving away with a tease shot of the truck opening and slimer peaking out with a playful wink.
Is it great? no, but I bet it's better than whatever daytime degrassi soap stuff I just read was.

This shit was clearly written as some other generic supernatural type movie and is simply being rebadged as GB.

Ah, but movie execs are like villains of '80s cartoons. Make taking over the world as hard and impossible as they can. I'd say retire the GB franchise*, if it just leads to more mediocre movies and World War....whatever number various Internet clashes have pushed us to by now. At the rate things have gone between fans and even the actors/actresses, arguments about Ghostbusters will be what causes the world's end. * - barring an Into the Spider-Verse type animated feature. You'd think they'd notice how successful this was, but....Sony's gonna Sony. They may be lower than WB/DCEU at this point, even. At least DC is starting to realize that standalone movies are a good idea.

Is it great? no, but I bet it's better than whatever daytime degrassi soap stuff I just read was. Yay, I was waiting for somebody to open the floodgates on tossing out our own ideas for a Ghostbusters movie so I can do mine. Thank you kind sir. So it's approximately thirty years after their dealing with Vigo. The Ghostbusters are still around but ghost activity isn't what it used to be. Without an "alpha spirit" like Gozer or Vigo to stir them up ghosts have become relatively peaceful. The Ghostbusters get maybe a dozen cases a year, a lot of them internationally, most of them wind up being false alarms or out and out frauds. That said, the few legit cases they do get have caused them to be classified as a necessary public service and entitle them to federal funding which keeps them afloat. Egon had passed away several years earlier and Winston has retired and started a family (although he still keeps in touch). They've attempted to bring in new people over the years but none have stuck around except for Kylie. Formerly Egon's prized pupil, she has multiple degrees in paranormal studies and has basically replaced Egon as their resident mad scientist. The team is basically Ray, Peter and Kylie. And also Janine, who still serves as their secretary, who has never completely gotten over Egon's sudden death. The movie opens with a young man arriving at the firehouse asking to speak to Peter. Janine initially treats him in her normal acerbic way until he finally introduces himself as Oscar Barrett, Dana's son. Suddenly Janine is thrilled to see him and immediately gets Peter to see him. While talking to Peter we discover that Dana passed away from cancer about a year earlier and on her death bed she revealed the truth to Oscar - Peter is his real father. At first Peter is shocked and attempts to run, but then stops and rethinks things and decides he wants to be apart of Oscar's life. To bond, Peter starts getting Oscar involved in Ghostbuster business, making him an unofficial Ghostbuster, over Ray and Kylie's protests that he has was never properly trained for this. Peter responds that they were never properly trained for this, and most of their cased nowadays are false alarms anyways, so what's the big deal? Then Peter makes the mistake of bringing Oscar along on a real case that gets very dangerous. In the end Peter winds having to save Oscar's life, but Peter dies in the process. They have the services and afterwards the entire group returns to the firehouse. It being late Ray says that Oscar can sleep in one of the spare bunks they have upstairs. Sitting in the bunk, staring over at his father's old empty bunk, he winds up having a conversation with Kylie. They wind up getting to know each other better and there's even some suggestion of a romantic interest between the two. When they're done and Kylie leaves to go back to her lab, we hear a familiar voice say "you should really hit that". Oscar looks over at Peter's bunk and see's his fathers ghost lying there. After some back and forth where Oscar attempts to prove he's not just having a breakdown, Peter reveals he returned as a ghost because something big is happening in the supernatural community and the Ghostbusters, or what's left of them, need to stop it. Nobody else can see ghost Peter except Oscar, but the PKE meter does read a presence where the ghost is, so the others believe Oscar and they get started on what to do to save the world. In the end the big bad is defeated, Peter having saved the world once again is able to move on to his afterlife, Oscar and Kylie become a couple, and Ray is finally able to retire, with a whole new group of young Ghostbusters brought it, now under the command of Oscar and Kylie. In the final scene we see Oscar and Kylie on a date, wondering how the new Ghostbusters are doing on their first night on duty without them. We then cut back to the firehouse where we see the new Ghostbusters at a poker table, losing badly to ghost Peter, we then swing the camera around a little and see Slimer, wearing a poker visor, is also sitting at the table shuffling the cards, then we swing the camera over a little more and see Egon's ghost is also sitting at the table playing cards (created using stock footage of Harold Ramis).

That description sounds like a coverup story description that gets put out there to cover up a big project being made to avoid potential leaks during the audition process.
So....calm down?

I know this was a while ago but I take issue with people trying to act like James Rolfe’s opinion video about GB16 wasn’t because it was really stupid and pointless.
Should he have been bashed how he was? Absolutely not. But it was dumb and really unnecessary. Just like every time anyone does a video like that.
“I’m not going to go see this movie”...like...good? Do you want a prize? Why take up 6 minutes of video standing in front of toys when a 180 character (at the time) Tweet would have been quicker and gotten to the point?
