According to Meltzer on the latest WOR, he's been a consultant since January.

I've always said you need individuals like Bret Hart, Scott Hall, Jake, and DDP as agents/writers who know how to build characters and tell stories. They would be the ones who could craft unique and fresh ideas. Bret said a few years ago he offered to work for them in a backstage role and they turned him down. That honestly doesn't surprise me. They know his creative output is not worth his bitter, self centered bullshit.

Why is it actual talent who've interacted with him when he's done talks and whatnot at developmental have had nothing but praise for how approachable and helpful he was if 'bitter, self centered bullshit' is such a problem? Who would be better for the WWE at this point, someone who calls the company out for their bullshit, who will criticise Vince's bad ideas, or someone who'll cave and defend them to the death 99% of the time because they like the money?

It's probably more that he doesn't like Triple H who is one of the higher ups in the company and he doesn't want to hire someone that he knows he won't get along with well and who has had nothing but bad things to say about him in the past. I like Bret but if I was in Triple H's position I don't know if I would want someone who has constantly bad mouthed me in the past to work underneath me. That doesn't seem like it would make for a healthy work environment.

I've not read or watched anything about Bret recently, like in the last year or so. But going by countless interviews with him and others, and the like, yeah, he comes across as bitter and self centered. If talent have praised him up then fair enough, maybe he would be great, but that's not the impression I get.

I'm already sick of everyone on twitter saying "Well done Bruce!" for bits of Raw they liked. It's as annoying as when every good segment was met with cries of "GOOD JOB JIMMY JACOBS!"

To me it's no different than people blaming Road Dogg for SDL's issues. Yeah it's not on him but people gotta find someone to go at. It's a group effort.

I think it could be possible that he is far more willing to interact with wrestlers who want advice than he is with interviewers who ask the same questions, over and over again. Unlike a lot of his old friends, Bret lived long enough to want to be done with all that bullshit. If the WWE were willing to put Bret in a creative role (which Triple H certainly won't be), then he'd be great at putting matches together. I'm not sure what storylines devised by Bret would be, but I don't see how they could be worse than 'now these two guys fight, and this guy wins. Next week, the other one does.'

Well sure, but there's obviously a reason WWE don't want to bring him on. Maybe it's just Triple H, maybe they just don't want him around due to his attitude towards everything.

Honestly, the best thing the WWE could do to improve the creative side of things would be to hire writers who aren't garbage, and take the revolutionary step of keeping track of every wrestler's interactions, matches and character beats, to create a sense of continuity and the feeling that life for these guys continues after they walk back behind the curtain.
The matches aren't the problem. The quality of them is generally better now than at any time in the company's history. The in-ring storytelling could improve though, and that's where road agents are supposed to factor in.
