Let's be real; there was a lot of homering in video game magazines.

Oh man, any magazine that wasn't Nintendo Power, Game Pro, or Electronic Gaming Monthly was so, so awful...

Oh man, that Link really did resemble Tim "The Toolman" Taylor, haha! EDIT: I also recommend watching Game Grumps' impromptu look at Sonic comic covers. They were just going through the old Sonic Mega Collection and came across the magazine scans of those comics. It's hysterical: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGkGhJKXBSs (language)

Let's be real; there was a lot of homering in video game magazines. The first party-dedicated ones were especially bad about it, yeah. Even Nintendo Power's coverage was so blatantly biased towards Nintendo-published games. Though Nintendo Power's reviews were the least interesting thing about the magazine and were more or less an afterthought compared to all the other good content in the magazines.
I think the unofficial first party-dedicated magazines like PSM (when they were still independent from Sony) were even worse in their fanboyish-ness than the official ones like OPM or NP.
EGM in its prime was so good. In general the ZD-published mags were pretty good. I thought Gamepro was kinda trash and hard to take seriously with their pseudonyms for all their writers, the O-faces for review scores, and the hilariously useless PROTIPS, but it did have neat art.
Also, any magazine with Dave Halverson on staff was kind of hilarious because that dude was insane.

Man, GamePro in its prime was amazing.
I remember issues being packed to the grills with content. Issues were I swear, 200-215 pages long and it felt like 400-500 pages to a kid’s eye like mine.

Anyone remember the MORAL OUTRAGE from the Helen Lovejoys of the world when one of the earliest issues of Nintendo Power had art of Simon Belmont holding Dracula's severed head for the cover?

Only video game mags I read and enjoyed were EGM and Diehard Gamefan.
Nintendo Power was crap. Very biased and bad reviews. Gamepro felt like it was written for 6 year olds.
Anyone remember the early 80s video game mag Joystick? Loved it when I was a kid.

Thank you. I would never see issues at the newstand. But the local library carried it.

I liked EGM but that one was TOO serious, I thought.
GOTTA GET A GAMEPRO!
Game Players was my jam, though. An issue of Game Players along with my PWI, and I was in heaven!

Shame that GameMaster wasn't shown, but I suppose that was only a UK thing.

Loved GamePro magazine, so fun to subscribe to during the 90's 16-Bit War heyday. Game Informer was alright, as was EGM.

The best part of any old game magazine for me are the articles talking about things that never really panned out (i.e. cancelled games, failed consoles, etc.).

GamePro in it's prime, definitely. Before it's prime, I remember almost every issue of GamePro had glaring typos and clearly wrong game information (especially in the tips' section most notoriously the GoldenEye 007 Easter Eggs that required a GameShark, but GamePro reported that it was possible to access without). As far as the funniest print gaming mag goes, everybody that read back in the day knows the only answer here is GamePlayers. And later Ultra GamePlayers. Those guys were frickin' crazy

To this day I still remember the funniest editor from Game Players' name Bill Donohue because he was just that damn good at his job to write about games and make me eager to read what new he'll have to say about the gaming industry next month. Quite a feat for me since I'm horrible with names but he stood out as an icon and definitely got me to fork over 5-7 bucks for a magazine everytime I cruised Waldenbooks. Helluva magazine
