Straburg has decided to opt out of his contract. I honestly see him landing in Boston for some reason. From what I hear, he will probably be the one to stay in DC in free agency while Rendon is more of a question mark. Yea DC will want to keep Straus knowing their pitching is the key They already had $200 million out there for Rendon and I don’t see it going too much higher. Can see someone like Texas needing a bat or Whitesox giving him a deal

Chapman and Yankees agree to extension
They added a year on his deal so he won’t opt out of his 3 year deal

This is about getting his money now, and the Nationals getting their ducks in a row.

Straburg has decided to opt out of his contract. I honestly see him landing in Boston for some reason. The Red Sox just hired Chaim Bloom with the purpose of cutting payroll, which may force them to trade a generational player like Mookie Betts or not re-sign J.D. Martinez. Considering some of their biggest issues regarding payroll stem from handing out albatross contracts to pitchers at or passing their primes (David Price, Chris Sale, Rick Porcello), I’d be absolutely floored if the Red Sox even consider talking to Steven Strasburg, let alone offering him a contract.

I'm not gonna start bitching about Rizzo b/c we just won the World Series lol but I'll never understand his fascination with going all in on pitching and letting the batters walk. There's no one in our system that can replace Rendon. Strasburg is elite as well, don't get me wrong, but at some point you're going to have to start paying for these hitters. What's going to happen when Soto is up for a monster extension? Let him walk?

Soto is way far out for UFA, so you guys pretty much do what you did with Harper and put it off as long as you can, make a good offer, and let the chips fall where they may. They've been competitive for a long time, they just won a WS, and they've got Soto for 5 more seasons, Trea, and Robles will be very good. That's a great young core for a team who is still within their window. It's not like Detroit was when their whole team was decrepit and you're just waiting for them to plummet. Your team is in a great spot, even offensively.

Again, it seems weird that I'm complaining about this after winning the World Series but I want them to keep the band together, or at least keep the core together.

I get that, but it's a steep price for anyone. Rendon is gonna cost 245, consevatively, Stras anywhere between 110 and 140, and Soto could break the bank worse than Rendon if he continues to rake. That's 600-650 million on three players. That's insane money. And the more you give Rendon now for his age 34, 35, 36 seasons, the less you have to offer Soto in the 24/25/26 years. It's a double-edged sword.

Rendon to the rangers? Well I look forward to them trading him for pennies on the dollar within 3 seasons like they did A-Rod

The fact is, Soto still has like another 5 years before he even touches free agency so that's not a worry. You can replenish bats if they are hitting, pitching is a diff story. Also let's not act like Rizzo did not give Rendon a contract. He sat on a reported $200 million deal all season. Rendon is good but no way can I really exceed further than that. So the tough choice is to let him walk which is not for a lack of trying. They can get a fill in bat but in the meantime you can start working on your young talent. I would not be surprised if they offered Soto a 10 year $100 mill deal like the Braves did with Acuna.

My biggest thing with Rendon is this: who are we going to replace them with? When Harper left, it wasn't a huge deal b/c we had Soto, Robles, and Eaton. Maybe they can sign Donaldson to a 1 year stop gap deal but IDK...I think management will lose a lot of good will that has been built up during these playoffs if they let Rendon walk.

He's a Boras client, yeah that extension is out the door If fans know the business as much as they think they do then they know the Nats hands are tied. Let's not kid ourselves, this team went on a magical run but their chances of repeating are not high. I would not pay a premium for Rendon just because we (the team) won a World Series. Nats had reportedly offered Bryce close to $300 million and now Rendon had a $200 million deal on this table all season. I don't see how much goodwill their is to lose if they did their part and the talent still left. They're not letting him walk, they are still going to try to keep him but their is a price you just don't go beyond before you hamstring yourself especially when you're about to have to break bank to keep Strausburg Donaldson isn't signing another one year deal. He's a guy who will command 3 or 4 years and a 3 year $75 mill deal isn't that bad. Moustakus could be an option as well

Gleyber is your shortstop of the future. This also frees up room to move DJ to 2nd base full time.
