Speaking of live action .
I just saw Shazam! and it was light hearted and fun but not afraid of some dark moments.
I read somewhere that DC is moving away from the doom and gloom approach, which is a good thing. I only hope they realise dark and gritty was never the problem, every movie being that way was the problem. It should still be used where it makes sense, Batman being a great example.
Any opposing opinions?

Yeah, I mean a purely lighthearted Batman movie would be silly. I like what they've done between Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Shazam. Hope they can keep it up.

Haven't seen Shazam. Wonder Woman was great, Aqua Man was fun but forgettable.
TV series, I loved Titans. It felt like a proper superhero show in a connected universe with cameos from other heroes.
Doom Patrol is, for me, the best superhero show. The perfect mix of interesting, well-developed cgaracters, humour, fun storylines snd emotional moments.
For me, Doom Patrol is how to do a superhero show. Embrace the silliness whilst keeping the drama. A Marvel show wouldn't feature things like a sentient gender-queer street, a prophetic cockroach and Admiral Whiskers alongside realistic and emotional portrayals of dealing with your sexuality and childhood trauma.

I would imagine DC/WB is gonna play it by ear from now on. They're just gonna let the tone of the movie fit the character and find writers and directors who understand the characters and can properly realize their vision for them. If someone walks in pitching an idea for a Blue Beetle/Booster Gold movie where the villain kills orphans and uses their body parts to make soup, they're gonna say no, no matter how much Geoff Johns or Grant Morrison might find the story intriguing.
I've said this before and I'll say it again, the reason why Man of Steel and Batman V. Superman (and Suicide Squad for that matter) sucked wasn't because they were too "dark and gritty". They sucked because they were poorly produced and realized. You can make a great dark superhero movie, you just gotta do it right.

I was just throwing out names in general of prominent DC writers who I think have way too much sway over DC nowadays to the detriment of the product. I didn't mean to imply that Grant Morrison specifically loves stories about villains who eat orphans.

I just wouldn't use him in that analogy because the guy is pretty loud about how he hates pointlessly grimderp storylines and has actually written a lot of digs about it in his own work.

That's true, but he's also supposedly the guy who helped Ezra Miller write his "dark" Flash movie script, so Morrison might have a different definition of "pointlessly" grimderp stories then we do.

Maybe, but I mean I'd need to see the script. its possible it was just a serious, heady story (something he DOES do a lot) and the studio wanted something a bit more fun. I really doubt his script would have involved Weather Wizard eating orphans or something. maybe if Mark Millar wrote it, though...

simple YOU START HEREsure keep WW as separate with cameos, and sure some more stand alones, but for me this was the start of JL(i) would be interesting to see alternates of captian marvel and shazam, but love to see doctor light and THAT green lantern in the flesh ..... also BARDA bought the single issues and have the first volume, definitely want to get the rest .....

No Batman movie should ever be darker than Batman '89. That was the perfect balance of dark and camp. If Batman didn't kill and Joker was just a random guy and not the Wayne killer it would be perfect.

The interesting thing about Shazam is that it did have some really dark moments, the boardroom scene is genuinely pretty chilling and way beyond what I expected given the comedic marketing. But it didn't feel the need to keep a relentless sense of misery and make the world look like a post-apocalyptic monochromatic pit of despair, so it worked to give the villain some genuine menace without making it feel like another piece of Edgy McGrimdark work. Hopefully that's the kind of balance they can manage from here.

Logan and Dark Knight were good examples of how to make a darker superhero story work because they used more adult themes to add to the tension of the story. Wolverine can be in a film that’s bloody and also thoughtful, and Batman works well with street crime elements. Those movies weren’t trying to shoehorn grim elements into characters that didn’t need them, like they tried with Superman for two and a half movies. I still need to see Aquaman but Wonder Woman had the right mix of seriousness and heart that suits the character.

LEGO Batman and the Brave & The Bold TV series showed you can have campy work in Batman in a modern age. It'd just have to be its own thing as opposed to say, a sequel in the Nolanverse.
Part of why I like the Arrowverse so much is that the shows usually have a great balance between serious moments and humor. And then you have Legends which is balls to the wall insane, but it also does its serious moments well.

I’ve started getting into Supersons, and I really want them to do something with that, even if it’s one or more of those direct to DVD animated movies.
Jon is like, pure pureness in its purest form, and Damien is the perfect combination of cynicism and deadpan humor that just work with each other so perfectly.

Hell you can make a Dark Superman movie but to do it you need to have Superman be the ray of hope in the dark world... not... whatever the hell Snyder thought he was.

Hell you can make a Dark Superman movie but to do it you need to have Superman be the ray of hope in the dark world... not... whatever the hell Snyder thought he was. I will always say that Winter Soldier was the best way to do dark with a ray of hope hero. In it we see Bucky's a villain, Hydra has taken over SHIELD, Cap is labeled a fugitive, and SHIELD is destroyed. They took all of that, but still kept Cap as Cap. He was still a beacon of hope, he wouldn't give up on people, believed that there were a lot of SHIELD agents that were exactly what Peggy, Howard, and Colonel Phillips had envisioned for SHIELD, and the second he said that Hydra had taken over everybody believed him. You can deal with dark themes and keep the characters true to themselves. Making Superman be mopey, brooding, depressed, and somebody who doesn't smile, isn't true to Superman.
