According to Meltzer, when Tony Khan first started getting serious about creating what became AEW he wanted Punk to be the centrepiece. Before he got The Elite and Jericho on board, he was going after Punk. What a completely different beast that would be. A weird, loud buzz right at the start, but then I imagine pretty quiet until the first event started. Definitely nowhere near the fervor AEW has created with the current line-up.

AEW has to bring him and secure that Big TV deal with TNT. And even if he didn’t feel physically up to working a full ring schedule again, there’s still good money in Punk doing play-by-play or a few one-off matches as a part timer.

As much as he bitched about part timers in WWE, it would be hilarious for him to be a part timer himself.

Knowing Punk, he could very well have handed his hoodie to someone backstage and said "Hey, wanna f*** with the internet marks?" Much like the Rise of Skywalker / Palpatine thing ("OMG HE'S ALIVE HE'S ALIVE HOW DID HE SURVIVE WTF"), it took someone quite a while to state the obvious ("Um he's obviously a Sith ghost?") amidst a pile of folks who are buying it ("HOW'S HE ALIIIIIIIIIVEWTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF").

I really enjoyed the few times he did commentary in WWE. Can you imagine if the AEW play by play was done by JR and Punk? That being said, I'd be just as happy if Punk remains wrestling's version of Sasquatch.

If you mean sporadic, unannounced, anonymous appearances, I think the publicity this is getting has probably ended that.

Also I'm gonna go ahead and raise my hand as a two faced hypocrite.
I talk shit about crabwalk this and full-of-himself that, but the slightest hint at Punk in wrestling has me all I AM PAYING FULL ATTENTION AND FANTASY BOOKING THE HELL OUT OF LIKE 3 COMPANIES, heh.

Punk in AEW would be cool, he could basically do anything he wanted. Him doing commentary would be awesome honestly.

I wonder if Tony Khan approached him before going to Jericho and the Elite. The Khan family is way richer than Vince, maybe he just doesn’t wants to any more.
I saw pics on twitter, and he definitely was a masked manager in Wrestling Road Diaries 3 but it ended up in the cutting floor once his problems with Cabana started.

He did something at Freelance Wrestling in Chicago a few years ago, which is what Fightful was talking about in their report.
He doesn't want to do pro wrestling anymore, unless it's silly shit like running in under a mask on an Ace Steel match unannounced.

Yeah Punk’s funny that way. It’s impossible not to give him some crap for his UFC run (still going by the way) and some of his actions associated with it. However, he is one of if not the best promos in the last 20 years and can put on some amazing matches.

If Punk has no intention of returning to wrestling, there may not be a second appearance for years, if ever. Event halls with Indy feds will be full of people sweating they saw Punk backstage in a mask. Moreso than usual, anyway.

If you’re the promoter, you’ve also got to question how many people will follow the masked man out the door trying to get a photo. I don’t think Punk is doing this again.
