And I’m not saying everyone has to like Cody. Far from it, but to discredit his hard work and to say he hasn’t earned his success because his last name is Rhodes gets under my skin a little. This x100. If anything, having a 'name' has proved to be a bad omen beyond maybe getting your foot in the door initially. The list is endless when it comes to wrestlers with famous relatives who did precisely f*** all of note. The fact is, whether Cody is your cup of tea or not he is a talent who put his money where his mouth was in terms of his own career and has proven time and time again that he is willing to put in more work than just about anyone out there to achieve his goals. For that alone, whether you enjoy his work or not he deserves your respect.

Honestly I think Cody's knack for sensing the popular elements in wrestling and becoming associated with them is a compliment to his business sense. He has the makings of a a seriously canny promoter and was keen enough to realize in terms of presentation the need to carry yourself as a star regardless of whatever weaknesses you may have in ring. While he's better in ring than Michael Hayes ever was, he has the former's ability to make himself a name and keep people's eyes on him, even along side fantastic in ring talent like the Bucks and Omega.
He's not the best wrestler, but the man knows how to work the crowds and shift the conversation in the business, and that's always been an invaluable skill in the industry.

So? -Ted DiBiaseJr -Manu -Jimmy Snuka Jr -Tamina -David Flair And the list could go on. All wrestlers who had the EXACT same leg up that Cody did. By your logic, they should all be where Cody is. Why did Cody succeed when they failed? Dumb luck? Or is it possibly work ethic and skill? And look at the ENTIRE AEW roster, they’re where they’re at because they made friends with someone who took a chance on them. Discrediting someone for that is just pure, biased dislike. This thread might as well have been called “I don’t like Cody, and no logic will change that”. Next someone is gonna say he shouldn’t be a star because he prefers Zelda II to the original. Those seem to be the straws being grasped at. EDIT: Austin was friends with Chris Adams, that’s how he got into WCW. Guess he didn’t earn his success either. Same with Foley coming to WWE because of his relationship with JR, guess that’s undeserved because he had to “gasp” use a friends connections to try and get a job. What a piece of shit Yes he’s talented but let’s not pretend that he wasn’t born in third base already. Also just to correct something, Austin didn’t got into wcw because of Chris Adams, he and Adams had a very bad relationship and he went to Memphis first and starved before going to wcw. And liking Zelda 2 should be against the Geneva convention, that game f***ing sucks. Also Austin was told by Vince that he was just brought in as a mechanic in the ring and that he would never cut a promo because of his Texan accent, he also said that Foley was another fat random rassler that wasn’t special. It took a lot to get them both hired, instead Cody got a contract right away, huh guess it pays who your Daddeh is babbeh. Curtis Axel got a contract right away. Carlito Colon. Lacey Von Erich. Bo Rotunda. In general, wrestling has so many second and third generation wrestlers who get chances, and do what they do with it. But how many have done what Cody has done. Cody left a paying gig to strike out and do more. He got super over, and combining his talent with his drive, created a movement in North American wrestling not seen in two decades. Selling out indie shows, breaking records, evolving the sport. And people look to cheapen it anyway they can. Thats fine. Im sure people cheapened Verne in the 50s, and they cheapened Heyman in the 90s, or anybody who took a big chance and created something new thats successful. Thats just the way it is.

The Elite? Hot Topic deal. Once again you cheapen his value by saying the Bucks would have achieved what they did without him. He brought something revolutionary with him. No revolutions happen in a vacuum. Your bias doesnt allow you to see his importance, and to his all time value. People will be talking about Cody and this time 20, 30 years from now.

Who started selling the shirts that made them mega popular? Cody wasn’t originally on the elite. Who made prowrestling tees and the bullet club shirt popular? Not Cody Rhodes, he came in much later. He helped, but he’s not this visionary like you’re exaggerating him to be. He’s talented but his friends started this, not him. His friends went viral first not him. The Bucks were already changing everything when he asked for his release. I don’t have bias against him, he’s a good worker for what he is, like mentioned above the master of the three stars. Cody wasn’t responsible for Hot Topic, The Bucks were. 20 years from now people will be asking why Cody dressed up as dollar store Goldust and the time he won a dead nwa belt.

I just respect him for having the courage to walk away from the safe money of the WWE, and set out to prove himself and find creative fulfilment on the indies and then in Japan. He could have crashed and burned, but instead he became one of the most talked about people in the business. He put together a PPV with his friends that did great business, and then he resolved to create his own wrestling company.
In-ring skill, mic skills, acting aside, his determination and commitment to making something in wrestling that he feels proud of are enough to make me at least a passive fan of the guy, and want him to succeed.

With Cody, I ask myself the question 'Would he have gotten his foot in the door in the WWE if his last name wasn't Rhodes?' I think that honestly, yes, he would have, because he's pretty much everything the WWE were looking for in developmental talent at that point in time, in terms of look and athleticism, he also took acting lessons and that would have helped him catch their eye. FCW was a clone factory and Cody would easily have been seen as a standout prospect in that environment even if he were just Cody Jones.

Cody is comparable to Jericho in that he's incredibly good at reinventing himself. He could have coasted for years on the Dashing character, but transitioned into the Disfigured persona and completely changed his character and mannerisms. Then he did the mustache thing, which... Ok, not great, but used it to establish a baseline character. Then went off the wall again with Stardust, wrestling so differently that he was almost a different person, something certain demons could learn a thing or two from. He's also great at promos and character work, and from JBL&Cole to BTE he's always pretty damn entertaining on top of that. (Also, to play a heel in a wrestling storyline up against two people in a same sex relationship and not once come across as bigoted or homophobic? While still being pretty despicable as a character? That's honestly pretty damn impressive and probably a first for wrestling in general.) He's also very savvy with the business side of things, using his 'list' to propel him into the indy scene even before he dabbled with the Bullet Club. And from there he's worked with the Bucks, hustled and merchandised and worked things out, and changed the industry around as a result. To take nothing away from the Bucks and the rest of the Elite and how hard they've worked for this, do I think that if they'd done all the exact same stuff with Adam Cole that AEW would be running now? Not really. {Spoiler}Also the Dashing Ones were a great tag team, fight me.

He has his daddy's ability to spot a money mark right away. He also values himself and his work, and doesn't live to get the pat on the head from Vince.

Cody is a absolutely amazing character worker and pretty good(not top level) in-ring. But its his character that carries him, since he first became "Gorgeous" Cody Rhodes he put it all in his character “Dashing”

Cody got where he was because of who he knows. Not what he knows. So have 95% of people in any industry ever. You could be the second coming of Eistein, Oppenheimer and Hawking all rolled into one, but if you don’t know the right people to get your foot in the door to develop and groom those skills then you’re another untapped genius working as an unskilled labourer So how many of those people have Dusty Rhodes as their father? Dustin Rhodes as their brother?

Alright, on the topic of wrestling nepotism: does Randy Savage rise in the industry if Angelo Poffo doesn't run an outlaw promotion? Do the Funks get ahead without their connections? The Harts? Maybe, maybe not, we can never know for sure.
Denying the role that a last name can play in giving someone a chance in the wrestling industry would be dishonest, at best, but at the same time it doesn't deprive any of the above mentioned talents or Cody of their actual talents and of the lessons they've learned growing up around the industry. Point is, a good last name can definitely help, but it's also no promise of any particular outcome.

His work as Dashing/Undashing Cody Rhodes is what sold me on him as a top level character wrestler. That was about the only time in WWE that I saw his potential for being a top guy.

The dude's undeniably magnetic, and he's got a vision that he's put the work in to see through. I'm a fan of the guy as a performer, but you can't disrespect the businessman. And yeah, it says a TON about how hard people work to discredit him, or pretend he's only a hanger-on to the Bucks(Who I hate as performers, but also respect as businessmen).
