The Gigantic Three Featuring: Sandman (as Metallica), Knotslip (as Slipknot), PoRn (as KoRn) Date: Saturday January 25th, 2020 Venue: the Rockpile in Toronto, Ontario I saw PoRn last year and they were a lot of fun. Tonight was just funny because the singer was already so drunk when they got on stage. Blind was brutal. But they cleaned it up and sounded good for the most part. They were super-sloppy and a total wreck but they were having fun so that’s all that mattered. There are a million other KoRn songs I’d rather hear...in fact if I were to make a dream KoRn setlist I think Twist and A.D.I.D.A.S. would be the only songs they played tonight on it. But it was fun. PoRn1. Blind 2. Freak on a Leash 3. Twist 4. Here to Stay 5. Make Me Bad/One 6. A.D.I.D.A.S. 7. Come Undone 8. Y’all Want a Single? 9. I Did My Time 10. Right Now 11. Falling Away From Me 12. Got the Life I’ve never been the hugest Slipknot fan...until this. Knotslip were a shit ton of fun. They only played the best stuff and had the act down to a “T”. They were f***ing crazy intense and I can only imagine that this was what it would have been like to see Slipknot twenty years ago, complete with the gathering of older metalheads back by the bark wondering what the hell they were witnessing. There were even nine of them on stage and being right but front I still have no idea what Craig Jones and Sid Wilson do in the band. I think they had all the original nines masks except the drummers. Unless he was wearing a really early mask that Joey Jordison wore that I’ve never seen. The highlight was People=Shit, because that is always the highlight. No matter what you’re doing. That song is the best part of your day. But Surfacing and Spit It Out were also insane. Knotslip-. Insert Coin/Prelude 3.0 (over P.A.) 1. The Blister Exists 2. Disasterpiece 3. Wait and Bleed -. 742617000027 (over P.A.) 4. (Sic) -. Duality (on the setlist but they didn't play it) 5. Liberate 6. Left Behind 7. Eyeless 8. Before I Forget 9. Surfacing -. (515) (over P.A.) 10. People=Shit 11. Spit It Out I reached an epiphany during Sandman’s set that I’m pretty sure I reached twenty-five years ago: Metallica aren’t that great. Their songs are all dead to me. Even the ones I like. And I wasn’t one of those guys who listened to nothing but Metallica growing up. I listened to way more Slayer and Sepultura when I was a kid and I still love their songs. But watching this, while it was fun...ish, was just like, “...wow...yay...Creeping Death...whoo-hoo...Master of Puppets...this is gonna take nine minutes”. It’s all just dead to me. Then they played crap like Nothing Else Matters, which literally cleared the floor and brought the enjoyment level of the entire show down to almost zero. I went to the bathroom and it was the first time I’ve ever seen a line-up to the mens bathroom at the Rockpile. If there was ever a testament to a song being utter garbage and in need of going away it’s that. And Metallica fans? They’re a different breed themselves. How can you still get excited by this music? That said Sandman were really good. I’ve seen more Metallica cover bands than I have the actual Metallica and I’d say these guys...were as average as average could be. They were as average as Metallica are. Sandman-. the Ecstasy of Gold (over P.A.) 1. For Whom the Bell Tolls 2. Creeping Death 3. Four Horsemen 4. (Welcome Home) Sanitarium 5. Harvester of Sorrow 6. Ride the Lightning 7. Nothing Else Matters 8. Master of Puppets 9. The Unforgiven 10. Enter Sandman 11. Fade to Black encore: 12. Seek and Destroy -. One (on the setlist but they didn't play it) Metallica suck. But the Slipknot cover band was so awesome and made the evening worth it. Sandman Knotslip PoRn Not sure about Craig Jones myself, but I’d say that the samples and scratching that Sid brought added a lot to the first album, at least. I thought one did samples and the other did scratching?

The Dominion, 30 immolated ; 16 returned, Psyothic, Cotton Mouth, (possibly) Jinn Arcana Date: Saturday February 8th, 2020 Venue: Tale of the Junction in Toronto, Ontario Cotton Mouth were very young but weren’t too bad at all. They were a grunge band and I don’t hear much of that these days. Especially original songs. So you know what? I really liked them. Psyothics singer announced before they started that he’d eaten something bad earlier and thirty seconds into their first song he ran downstairs to the bathroom. The rest of them just stood there in silence laughing about it. When they did eventually play they sounded like System of a Down mixed with metalcore. Musically they were really good. But the singer kind of sucked. So pretty much exactly like the real System of a Down. They were better off with him in the bathroom. I really felt bad for 30 immolated ; 16 returned havinf to play here. I haven’t even touched on how ghetto the venue was. It reminded me of the places my bands played in twenty-five years ago in Oshawa and Ajax. And these guys are classically trained music teachers. They played good but Wanda kept popping the fuse in her power bar. So, I got to be her official “button guy” resetting it whenever it blew. A job that only one with my vast, many years of being an electrician could pull off. 30 immolated ; 16 returned1. The Antechamber of Hell 2. The Circle of Shit 3. Mistress Maggie’s Masterpiece The Dominion were okay. They were like Pennywise. But once I noticed the guys from 30 immolated ; 16 returned had gotten the hell out of Dodge I bailed. I think Jinn Arcana may have played after them (and I actually wanted to see them) but I was done with this one. It’s only February but this may be the worst show at the worst venue I’ll see in 2020. I know I say that a lot but...shit, I say that a lot. I need to get my priorities in check. But I do it for you: my adoring public. If not for me where would you get your Sunday morning entertainment? 30 immolated ; 16 returned www.facebook.com/30-immolated-16-returned-1440005762811312www.facebook.com/TheDominionHCHCwww.facebook.com/Psyothicwww.facebook.com/jinnarcanaband

Astaroth Incarnate, Morbid Prototype, Uriel Date: Saturday February 29th, 2020 Venue: Sneaky Dee’s in Toronto, Ontario I like Sneaky Dee’s but I f***ing hate that their shows are always early because they have video dance parties at 10pm. Doors at 6pm, show at 7pm? Get the f*** out. Uriel weren't that good. There levels were pretty bad and their lead singer really wasn’t very good. They were like a mix of symphonic black metal and a pirate metal band but way more progressive. There was a lot of bass tapping. I hate that. I’d have liked more violin. Uriel1. ? (probably a Slayer cover) 2. A Thousand Burdens 3. ? (probably a Slayer cover) 4. Insight 5. ? (probably a Slayer cover) 6. Lies 7. Multiverse 8. Born From Regrets Morbid Prototype were a lot like whatever sub-genre of black metal that Dark Funeral or Watain are a part of. Not usually my cup of tea but much better than the previous band. Their bass was a bit much too. But this guy sounded like Les Claypool playing in a black metal band. Morbid Prototype1. ? (probably a Slayer cover) 2. The Flesh of God 3. ? (probably a Slayer cover) 4. Spiritual Genocide 5. Morbid Prototype 6. Abyssal Screams 7. Chimera Astaroth Incarnate were good but I’ve seen them better. The sound wasn’t that good tonight. It’s really too bad because they’re becoming one of my favourite local bands. Lindsey Schoolcraft was there tonight so it was pretty funny that they played Her Ghost in the Fog. I mean they’ve been playing that for years but given she got expunged from Cradle of Filth last week it was some nice salt in the wound. She was probably like "yeah, f*** those guys". Astaroth Incarnate1. I Am Fire/I Am Death (Alpha) 2. Tetris of Selection (that’s not the title but that’s what I heard) 3. ? (probably a Slayer cover) 4. Onslaught 5. Sanctum of Torment 6. Her Ghost in the Fog (Cradle of Filth cover) 7. I Am Fire/I Am Death (Omega) Then Sneaky Dee’s was literally like GET THE f*** OUT! f*** that place. Astaroth Incarnate Morbid Prototype Uriel

A Primitive Evolution, Sulpher, On, Phantom High Date: Saturday March 14th, 2020 Venue: Lee’s Palace in Toronto, Ontario I braved the end of civilization for this show. Not many other people did. I felt bad for Phantom High. They’re so awesome and they played to maybe ten people. Their sound was crap at first too. I don’t think Lee’s Palace is a good place for them. It’s too big. And I don’t think going on before midnight suits them either. By their third song they sounded good. Phantom High1. Ambiguous 2. ? 3. Shadows 4. Bitchface 5. Lotion 6. Suicide On (formally Acid Test) were a pop-punk band. I found out afterwards while writing this that they’ve been around for something like 25 years… Not my thing at all but I guess they were good for that style. On1. ? 2. Despite You 3. ? 4. Gater? 5. Blackmail 6. ? 7. ? Sulphers big claim to fame is that Rob Holiday (who played live guitar for the Prodigy and Marilyn Manson up until a few years ago) is in the band... ...yeah Whatever. They were really cool. Given any other night they’d have been awesome. But tonight was just not the night. They did a cover of the Beautiful People. I think there was another band called A Primitive Evolution playing afterwards but for whatever reason I left. I don't know why but it's five hours later now and I did. Tonight was just not a good night. This may end up being the most depressing show I go to this year since everything else is probably canceled for the next month and then things will have worked out. But I haven’t felt this off at a show since when I saw Machine Head the weekend after that Eagles of Death Metal show got bombed in Paris a few years ago. And I'm not even worried about the Coronavirus. The vibe in the club was just...like everyone wanted to be there but no one felt they should be there. It felt like a sad ending to everything everyone had ever known. Not only was the place dead but the house played the same song on repeat between each band. They at least played a different song between each band but it was the same three-minute punk songs between each set. I think they played a Melt-Banana song playing between On and Sulpher. The only positive tonight was the bartender gave me a quad for the price of a double at the beginning of the show because there were five people there and doors had been open for a half an hour. Sulpher On Phantom High

Iron Priest Support: Waking Ayden Date: Saturday August 22nd, 2020 Venue: the Rockpile in Toronto, Ontario What better way to get back into live music than a Saturday at Toronto’s grittiest, grimiest bar? And Rockpile brought in the lowest of the low tonight. It felt good to be back. That said the show was outdoors on the deck or patio or whatever you want to call it. That I could live with but we all had to stay seated and stay far away from the stage and that sucked total ass. Usually sitting is fine with me but my knees have been bad the last few days and standing is good. And I was feeling it after my second beer. Plus the line of view on Rockpile patio is garbage. Waking Ayden were typical bar butt-rock but they’re the best band I’ve seen in six months. I kept thinking they were called "Saving Abel" and that I'd seen them before but I don't think either was the case. Iron Priest were obviously an Iron Maiden/Judas Priest cover band. They were just some dudes though and didn't bother with trying to dress like either band. They played the Maiden stuff better and played a decent selection of both bands. I don’t know enough Iron Maiden to really care but there are a million Judas Priest songs I’d have liked to hear over what they did play. Rapid Fire was a cool surprise. But It was what it was. The "Eddie" that seemed to be having a hard time keeping his balance made it all worthwhile. Iron Priest1. ? (Iron Maiden) 2. Diamonds and Rust (Judas Priest) 3. Wasted Years (Iron Maiden) 4. The Ripper (Judas Priest) 5. Killers (Iron Maiden) 6. Hellbent for Leather (Judas Priest) 7. Powerslave (Iron Maiden) 8. Metal Gods (Judas Priest) 9. Aces High (Iron Maiden) 10. Rapid Fire (Judas Priest) 11. The Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden) 12. You’ve Got Another Thing Coming (Judas Priest) 13. Two Minutes to Midnight (Iron Maiden) 14. The Hellion/Electric Eye (Judas Priest) So, COVID concerts/shows are pretty much dick. It was over by 11pm due to Ontario noise laws or whatever. Plus all the restrictions I spoke on earlier. Eat dick, COVID. Iron Priest Sad Eddie Waking Ayden

Johnny NoCash Date: Saturday September 5th, 2020 Venue: the Rockpile in Toronto, Ontario I wasn’t going to go to this but when the promoter asked me if I had anything better to do and was being picky in this day and age she pretty much hit the nail on the head. Ontario is allowing indoor gatherings limited to 50 people and that’s double what most of her shows draw. Johnny NoCash is like “outlaw country” and that I like. I don’t know any of the names of the songs he played (even though he rattled off a few titles) but it was good. This night was shit! This night ruled!

The Sheep of Lucifer Date: Friday October 2nd, 2020 Venue: the Rockpile in Toronto, Ontario I’ve never really been a fan of Lamb of God. I’ve heard enough songs to know them well enough but they all sound the same to me. I do like the songs 11th Hour and Straight for the Sun/Desolation. But I’ve spent way too much time in my basement drinking by myself and watching horror movies lately so I just needed to get out. A Lamb of God tribute band is as good as it gets these days. Sheep of Lucifer were probably better than the actual Lamb of God since their vocalist was a little harsher and doesn't talk as much as Randy Blythe. Musically they nailed it all, but Lamb of Gods songs really aren’t that challenging. I’m surprised how much of it I didn’t know. Maybe I’ve heard most of these songs before but like I said Lamb of God songs all sound the same. The titles I did get I only got because the singer said them. And I know 11th Hour. But for all I know they played Now You’ve Got Something to Die For, Omerta, Contractor and whatever the other Lamb of God staples are. All that said I liked what I heard. Lamb of God aren’t “kvlt” but I think I should be listening to them more. Especially their earlier stuff. They just “broke” at a time when I was dirt poor and their best days slipped though my fingers, and I’ve never bothered to go back and catch up. It was pretty lame that their “two sets” were basically what was probably their one set split into two. Set 11. ? 2. Ruin 3. ? 4. Remorse is for the Dead 5. 11th Hour 6. ? (I’m not sure what this was but the singer said it was a song Lamb of God themselves won’t play anymore because of the Daniel Nosek incident, I assume it was the song they were playing when he died or one of the songs they wrote about the incident) 7. ? Set 21. ? 2. ? (Whatever this song was I liked it, maybe from that description you can tell me what it was?) 3. Set to Fail 4. Hourglass 5. One Gun 6. ? 7. Walk With Me in Hell 8. In Your Words I did find out that Rockpile was supposed to shut down in August and these shitty shows are what’s keeping it going. That’s sad because it’s a legendary crappy venue in Toronto. Without it Anvil would have had nowhere to play between their heyday and their resurgence thanks to that movie. There were seriously maybe only 20 people at this show. I’d thought that Sheep of Lucifer would’ve drawn a little more since Lamb of God are so popular. But maybe not. These guys were just a bunch of kids having fun and they belong low on a multi-band bill but that shit ain’t happening these days. It was quite a depressing evening. Sitting during extreme (even “extreme-ish”) bands sucks. But I have to take what I can when I can because it looks like things are going to grind to a halt again very soon.

Every show I went to last year, I found myself thinking "maybe I'm getting a little old to spend way too much on beer and listen to a guy scream at me over blast beats".
This year I'd really like to go to a show, but I concur that sitting during something like that sounds depressing. Even if I'm not going to mosh I'd like to feel like part of a crowd.

Still beats catching parts of a "Battle Of The Bands" and having to suffer through a horrifically off-key cover of "Sober."

Xero Tolerance Date: Saturday November 7th, 2020 Venue: the Atria in Oshawa, Ontario I was a little worried about this show. I love Type O Negative and I’ll go see Xero Tolerance whenever they play out of respect for Pete, even if they (Xero Tolerance) are usually pretty terrible. The big flag was they were doing a double-set tonight. They butcher the songs they play regularly bad enough. I wasn’t looking forward to the songs they added to their set just for this and have never played live. Much to my surprise they were a lot better than usual. Maybe they’ve been practicing a lot for this once (since it was all on them) or maybe it was since I haven’t seen fifty-two thousand bands this year and they were great by proxy. But they really nailed it all, ESPECIALLY the songs they haven’t played before ( Profits of Doom/World Coming Down, I Don’t Wanna Be Me and Pyretta Blaze). I’d never even heard Plastic before, which was the beginning of the Biohazard song that Peter sang on. They only did the intro, which was fine. Biohazard suck. They have a new drummer and he f***ed up a few times but they recovered nicely. I was so happy for them; I was so happy for me; but most of all I was happy for Pete because their show in April on the 10-year anniversary of his passing had to be cancelled and this was a fitting (albeit late) tribute to the metal legend. Set 11. Der Untermensch ( “Waste of Life” outro)/Love You to Death 2. Kill All the White People (w/Jesus Hitler intro) 3. Christian Woman 4. Blood & Fire 5. Creepy Green Light 6. My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend 7. Wolf Moon Set 2 8. Profits of Doom/World Coming Down 9. I Don’t Wanna Be Me 10. Pyretta Blaze 11. Plastic/Black No. 1/I Know You’re f***ing Someone Else 12. Bloody Kisses/Halloween in Heaven (w/An Ode to Locksmiths “We Ain’t Going Home” outro)

Live from Inside the Cybertronic Spree Date: Friday December 11th, 2020 Venue: the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto, Ontario I’ve given in and decided to give online shows a shot. At least I can drink as much as I want and it won’t cost me $100 every time I go out. Actually, it’s not the first one: my friend Johns band did one a few months ago on YouTube that I watched. But this is the first time I’ve paid for one. Desperate times indeed. I’m not sure why I chose this one but I did so here I am. Sitting on my couch in my pajamas watching people dressed as Transformers perform. And not even Generation 1 Transformers. Here we had Hot Rod, Arcee, Bumblebee, Shockwave, Soundwave, Unicron and a Quintesson playing songs from the 1986 Transformers movie, some originals that could have fit on that soundtrack and a few other surprises. Rumble was supposed to be there but there but wasn’t. The costumes were really well done and the band very good. That they could perform in those costumes was really impressive, especially the drummer. Unicron f***ing shredded too. I do like all those songs from the movie. The originals were harmless pop-rock-punky songs I won’t remember. I doubt though that I’d actually go see this live. I think they played here last summer during the big con in August. But for $15 and a bit of frustration it was cool. -. ? (I missed a song or two trying to get the stream to work) 1. Nothings Gonna Stand in Our Way 2. Transformers movie theme 3. Immigrant Song (Led Zeppelin cover) 4. Dare 5. Thundercats Theme 6. Nothing Left to Lose (original song) 7. Instruments of Destruction 8. ? (original song) 9. The Touch 10. ? 11. Cybertronic Warrior (original song) 12. Dare to Be Stupid 13. Hunger 14. Christmas with the Devil (Spinal Tap cover) The livestream thing was okay. Pretty anticlimactic on all fronts. Especially at the end of the show. I don’t like it but I’m willing to live with it for a while longer.

Since live shows are done for a while still here’s a couple I watched on YouTube
Man, they were so young and the band had been around for a few years already (granted none of the original members were in the band even this early). I’ve always liked Mick Harris. It’s too bad he left the band shortly after this.
Savage performance.
Another savage performance. Reminds me of the shows I frequented in the good ol’ days.

Those are all Gen 1 characters though. I thought Gen 2 started with the first movie? Nope. Everything from 84 to 90 was Gen 1. Gen 2 started in 92 and was mostly repaints and a few new molds, with the cartoon being reedited with awful cgi scene transitions, a 12 issue comic, and pretty much all new toy molds by the time it switched to Beast Wars in 96.

Devin Townsend “Ocean Machine - Biomech Livestream” May 1st, 2021 From some house on a forest mountain, probably in British Columbia Biomech has been one of my favourite albums for over twenty years and even though I’ve listened to it hundreds of times I’ll always be up for listening to it again. I f***ing hate livestreams but this was no different. I was a little disappointed that it was just Devin by himself playing to a backtrack. A full band thing would have been way cooler. He did great though. He sounded perfect and he nailed most of the guitar parts. There were a couple of parts in solos that he didn’t do. I especially noticed that at the end of Life but I think anytime I reviewed any of his live shows where he played that song I noticed the same thing. But he did add some shredding to Regulator. He only lost his voice during parts of the climax in Funeral but I actually appreciated that because it was actually live and proved he wasn’t using overdubs. And he f***ing NAILED the Death of Music. It was pretty awesome and definitely better than that live album he put out a few years ago where he performed the album with a full orchestra (and band). The ending salvo of Funeral, Bastard and the Death of Music never fails to amaze me. He’ll never top this album. The setlist was obviously: 1. Seventh Wave 2. Life 3. Night 4. Hide Nowhere 5. Sister 6. 3am 7. Voices in the Fan 8. Greetings 9. Regulator 10. Funeral 11. Bastard 12. The Death of Music 13. Things Beyond Things (encore?) 14. Ocean Machines (chorus only because he forgot to practice it and that’s all he could remember)

Malignancy “Benefit for the Capital Theatre” live stream Friday May 21st, 2021 From: GB’s Juke Joint probably somewhere in New York This was a better live stream than most of the other ones I’ve watched. Brutal Death metal really needs to be experienced in person but the sound was really good and the multi-cameras were frantic and had much better angles. The band sounded better than they would live but the guitar could have been louder. They’re not my favourite death metal band but they’re cool guys and I like that all their songs sound exactly the same and have no slow parts, except the intro to Waterlogged Corpse. Just unstoppable brutality for 50 minutes. 1. Inhuman Grotesqueries 2. Type Zero Civilization 3. Eugenics 4. Intrauterine Cannibalism 5. Contagious Psychosis 6. Motivated by Hunger 7. Profitable Extinction 8. Separated Anxiety 9. Ignorance is Bliss 10. Debilitating Morphology 11. Waterlogged Corpse 12. “Birthday Song” 13. Vaginal Incisors 14. Rotten Seed Live streams can eat a bag of dicks. I'm so done with this shit. And it looks like I have an Emperor one on Sunday.

Emperor “A Night of Emperial Wrath” livestream Sunday May 23rd, 2021 From Notodden Teater in Notodden, Norway Emperor were the first black metal band I ever got into and still are one of my favourites, despite their relatively small discography and short lifespan compared to their peers. I was supposed to see them live this summer at Psycho Las Vegas but I decided to bail on that because I’m still not sure what the travel situation between Canada and the United States is going to be like. A bunch of bands dropped off that show too but I think Emperor stayed on. Whatever. I’d always heard they were really boring live but they looked fine here. I mean they’re really not a “jump all over the place like a maniac” kinda band, especially when they’re so technically proficient and really just not that kind of music. It was good to see Ihsahn still hitting all the notes after turning full prog shit in his solo career. This was probably the most high profile a show they’re going to do for their 30th anniversary and I thought they were supposed to play the Wrath of the Tyrant/Emperor demo albums in full but they didn’t. They did bring out original bass player Mortiis and drummer Faust for Call from the Grave and Wrath of the Tyrant and then Faust again for I Am the Black Wizards and Inno A Satana. Mortiis was in his full troll-fairy gear. Other than that they pretty much just stuck with their best stuff; ie a large portion of material from In the Nightside Eclipse and Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk and one song from each of the last two albums because...I’m not sure why because. They could have just played Into the Infinity of Thoughts instead. They sounded bang on except the vocal harmonies at the end of Inno A Satana sounded rough (although they’ve sounded rough in every live recording I’ve heard of that song) and something weird was going on with the keyboard during the ending of Ye Entrancemperium. Highlights for me were In the Wordless Chamber, the Loss and Curse of Reverence, With Strength I Burn and I Am the Black WizardsThe camera work was really good. They started superimposing shit like forestry landscapes over the band playing in the second half of the show and I didn’t really like that. It was cooler and looked better when it was just the band. I’d like to see them live some day but I honestly doubt their setlist would be any different from this so I’m really in no rush. (intro)In the Nightside Eclipse Intro 1. In the Wordless Chamber 2. Thus Spake the Nightspirit 3. The Loss and Curse of Reverence 4. The Acclimation of Bonds 5. With Strength I Burn 6. Call from the Grave (Bathory cover) 7. Wrath of the Tyrant 8. Curse You All Men! 9. The Majesty of the Night Sky 10. I Am the Black Wizards 11. Inno A Satana 12. Ye Entrancemperium (outro)The Wanderer FYI: “watch anytime” actually means “watch anytime within the next three days”. I found that out the hard way when I was too busy to watch this when it first aired on May 23rd and got around to it today, only to find out my purchase had expired. That’s the second that’s happened to me with these f***ing livestreams. So I ended up paying for this but then having to watch some dudes pirated video on YouTube anyway.
