From Asuka's Twitter. Direct link for those that don't get embeds. That's cool. So their team name is kind of "The Weirdos"? haha. I saw an old Kairi tweet from like 2015 calling her flying forearm the "kabuki elbow" too so I guess it has a history with her too. I'm just glad they're not called "Team" something or an awful portmanteau of some kind. But they're not Kabukimono warriors or even Kabukimonos. They're Kabuki which is a distinctly different thing.

The origin of the style is clearly inspired by kabuki and the idea of being eye catching. That plus its literally kabuki+person

Not linking because the tweet Paige quoted has swearing in it, but she says that Asuka and Kairi chose the Kabuki Warriors name, but they originally wanted it to be the Kabuki Girls. I have no reason to doubt Paige on her word, really, but the general discourse around WWE is just so negative and toxic because of all the stories coming out about talents being unhappy, staff being unhappy, people of ill repute being featured stars and another Saudi Arabia show on the way, ON TOP of the general malaise of the weekly TV product, that I’m not surprised that minds went towards “THAT’S RACIST” and that I wouldn’t be surprised if Paige is eventually accused of covering up and putting up a front to get the heat off of Vince. *sigh* This shit’s no fun to talk about anymore. That’s not anyone’s fault, but it’s why I’m barely saying things on here, at the moment. Thankfully, things may change when the AEW train gets rolling.

I mean, I’ve always been kind of arms-length away from really getting into the whole All Elite thing. I’ve kept general tabs on their progress, sure, but not much else because I’ve never really been a fan of the “Take potshots at WWE” schtick (no matter how much they might actually deserve it). But I’m nothing if not curious about how the TNT show will go.

Though let's not pretend that Vince throwing a lazy stereotypical name out there would be something out of his wheelhouse.
I wouldn't even fault him for it. He's in his 70s and it's practically wrestling booking 101. Easy character to come up with, easy heat. For a long time if you were a Russian or vaguely-Russian wrestler you would have been pretty much leaving money on the table not being a villainous communist.
Racist would be too strong of a word for it anyway.

To me it's not "omg racist!" as much as it's just lame and campy. Like something you would see in Glow.

Fun Fact: Kabuki is for a long time a man'only thing. But dont let that stop WWE because JAPANESE RIGHT? Even if they came up with the name its pretty bad At least get both gimmicks in there: Kabuki Pirates Why would "man only" be something they care about in this era of womens wrestling? This whole thing sounds stupid, like theres people upset the Japanese women have a japanese name and thats...bad? Like, a really lazy mashup name was so much better?

I dislike either anyway. it was more a fun fact.I just wish there was away to get a cool name that represents both. I guess weird and standing out cna fit both. Its bad ,and boring, because WWE always boils tag teams of foreign heritage to "that country".For example Sky Pirates was neat, not that silly bu goofy like Kirai, and it fits then as a theme.

Well I don't know anything about Japan or Japanese language but Kairi clearly likes the word already since she named a move with it before. And Asuka posted that kabukimono thing so she must be kinda into it too? Does Japanese have abbreviations? Like could it be short for kabukimono?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with Kairi and Asuka leaning into their heritage. Its not like either of them hides from it and it is a part of them. "Sky Pirates" still isn't anything other than combining one word from each of their catchphrases and pretending it makes sense. Maybe its just me but they literally did that wwith EVERY MMC team and it never made sense. Even Boss and Hug Connection falls into it.

Is it really that? Jesus. Nothing about them is related to Kabuki. Hell, Asuka's mask is a freakin' Noh mask, which comes from an older and much different form of Japanese theater. Yeah, and even outside of the mask her entire movements/style/designs are from Butoh theater. There's absolutely nothing kabuki about either one. Just unbelievably baffling!

Like could it be short for kabukimono? its unusual but could be the double meaning.About the art itself(which is famous for the style and drama, kinda like wrestling)f AND being weird. It certainly fits Asuka, she is both kabukimono (weird and eye-catching) and of course inspired by kabuki in the visual in the way she acts too

...Asuka's mask though have elements of kabuki to theme though I don't think their is any kabuki element though to Kairi No, there's no element of Kabuki theater to her mask. With VERY few exceptions, masks aren't a part of kabuki theater. That's a big distinction between Noh theater and Kabuki theater. Even the paint on it isn't Kabuki-esqe, it's from Butoh theater.

I find the art style in the mask much more resembling the Kabuki makeup than Butoh. But it varies I thinka few are more Butoh.
