I'm going to say perhaps controversially that I haven't really enjoyed this series. The cricket has been fine, but the drama and the eagerness of some supporters and most of the press to stoke it and participate in the pathetic dick waving and shit flinging contests hasn't been enjoyable, it's been tiring. I'm almost at the point now where I'm not sure I actually care who wins. It reminds me of the 2021 series against India in everything just being overshadowed by bickering and nastiness and the extent to which people seem to thrive on hostility.
And then we've got to endure a month of the f***ing Hundred afterwards.

And then we've got to endure a month of the f***ing Hundred afterwards. This sniping at each other by both countries sports journalists and some fans is probably the main thing I can’t get behind this sport. I can’t just sit and enjoy it as a neutral without this petty competitiveness provoked by tabloids mostly. The worst of this Australia/England rivalry was not during a cricket match. But a soccer match at the last Olympic Games between the Australian women and Great Britain women. If you remember the Tokyo games was quite a wholesome affair, it was a breath of fresh air to see the athletes be competitive, but also be friendly and respectful with their competitors. But social media during that soccer match. While I only saw the Australian side. It was just pathetic men trying to ignite this rivalry between these two sides. Australia won that match and the reactions were just awful. Saw a post by AFL player Patrick Dangerfield saying something like “Piss off back to your Queen”. It was pathetic. These athletes were not millionaire sports stars, they were basically kids who most of them probably don’t play at a professional level. It was awful. This is why I can’t get behind the ashes as a whole and I dread when ever Australia play England/GB at anything

Not the best way to lose an ashes but at least England restored some pride after losing the first 2 tests.

I mostly ditched football/soccer some years ago in part because I got sick of the hostility in the English game. But yeah, the press absolutely loves stoking that hostility for clicks and paper sales, and social media has made everyone feel the need to sound off about it, smug that they’re right and the other side is wrong in some way. At the risk of sounding like I have a victim complex, being an English cricket supporter online is often not fun, it feels as if you’re fair game for abuse, for want of a better word, to several other big supporter bases. It’s probably how other football supporters feel about English ones, actually. I’m at the point where I’m now looking forward more to Sri Lanka and the West Indies next season than I am the remainder of this series or the tour to India, because I’ll at least be able to watch and enjoy them without this nastiness pervading it.
