What are some anime series that you think is overlooked or underrated
I enjoyed Eden of the East. An anime series and 2 movies with a good enough plot to keep you going and wondering what happens next

I could probably throw out tons of examples but I'll start with Princess Principal. I've.... pretty much never seen anyone actually talk about it but I loved it. Really the only major grievance I can think of with the series is that it doesn't really have an ending, but it's getting a second season anyway.
That said I'd recommend watching the dub. I tend to watch dubs but can usually go either way but in this case I feel like the series would actively make less sense subbed - all the writing's in English, the setting's the UK, and one episode has some people speaking Japanese while the rest are speaking English and I'd have no idea how that would work in the original language.

I still maintain that Cross Game and Planetes don't get enough love.

One of the weirdest, funniest anime ever. This trailer doesn't do it justice.
Even weirder. Pokemon with aliens, I guess.
A sweet, romantic show about a girl feeding a boy her saliva.

I’ve always been surprised that Ranma 1/2 wasn’t bigger in the west. It was the kind of show that would have fit right in on Toonami or Adult Swim, especially since the same woman who created it also created Inuyasha, which did air on them. Although it did still manage to gain a pretty sizable fandom in the fanfiction community, which is where I got my start in as well.

I had Gall Force taped off of a SciFi Channel broadcast. Wore that tape right out.
Haven’t watched it in ages though so I can’t say whether it has held up.

Know it has something of a western fanbase (even then doesn't exactly seem like a gigantic one, don't see much talk about it) but for whatever reason it bombed in Japan, Flip Flappers. I actually find the ED a lot more memorable / fitting but let's go with the OP anyway.
It's... kind of a magical show while also being a world-hopping sci-fi series? The closest point of comparison I can think of in terms of the premise is Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi and even then tonally they're really nothing alike, Flip Flappers is while still pretty comedic a lot less goofy than that is and has a far more relaxed pace.
I will grant the quality does slip a little in the second half, since the main plot is kind of the weakest part of it, but it's still a hell of a lot of fun. Episodes 6 and 7 I think are the best ones; the former is genuinely heartbreaking while the latter is a really good and inventive character study that pretty much confirms that all of the gay subtext in the episodes before it is completely on purpose, which I think is really one of the biggest strengths of the show.

Hellsing.
No, not Hellsing Ultimate, the original Anime version of it that came out in 2003. Personally and I know I'll get some flack but I liked it better than Ultimate which was too over the top for me.

I don't feel Soul Eater gets the love that it should. It was a super fun anime that had comedy spliced with drama in all the right spots.
Also, Death the Kid is hilarious with his OCD on perfect symmetry.

Even bought it on DVD.

Excel Saga and Tank Police (Both OVA series) are really good comedies, although the former depends on how amusing you find Excel herself.

Medaka Box.The Manga is amazing and the anime got cancelled at the moment the story goes from good to freaking amazing.
NSFW-lots of blood.
Kumagawa is one of THE best characters in manga,as a character and as a parody of overpowered enemies.

I liked them following the over the top story of the Manga for the OVA because it was supposed to be over the top and self serving with the Major and his bullshit

Also, Death the Kid is hilarious with his OCD on perfect symmetry. Is Soul Eater really underrated tho? It just never reached the top if the genre like a Black Clover did but I feel like Soul Eater had a good enough run even tho I never really got into it and it has been on my backburner for years to go back to

I remember Excel Saga being hysterically funny, but I'm not sure how well it holds up.
Also, Ikuhara is very definitely not for everyone, but I always thought Mawaru Penguindrum deserved more credit as its own thing and not just Wackiness From The Utena Guy.

Welcome to the NHK. A comedy-drama which is both very funny and very heartfelt, examining topics like depression, social anxiety, failure to launch in your 20’s, and more. It’s very Bojack Horseman-esque in its tone and themes.

As weird as it is to say, because at a time it definitely wasn't the case, I feel like with time Trigun's kind of become forgotten and become retroactively underrated among the modern anime community when so many contemporaries or other "iconic" anime like it have stayed prominent and apart of common discussions.
I feel similarly about Paranoia Agent, which I still think may be one of the greatest anime series ever made.
There's a ton of others I could think of, but I think Mushishi is another strong contender for an anime that's often overlooked and criminally underrated for the quality of the show.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes (the OVA) is in a spot where it is beloved and has a lot of fans, but really ought to be bigger than it is. I can highly recommend it, particularly if you like intrigue and a sci-fi anime that isn't your usual fare.
