That whole thing was probably one of the first times that you saw what kind of power the internet could harness in terms of hijacking the TV narrative. The only previous example would probably be the Goldberg/Lesnar match at WM20.
In hindsight though, I do feel bad for Lita because of how the backlash to this basically drove her out of full-time wrestling in about a year and a half. Yeah, she did the wrong thing morally, but that shouldn’t mean people on the street get to yell “YOU SCREWED MATT” and “SLUT” at you while you’re off to get the bread and milk, like.

Matt came across as such a douche, I actually sympathised more with the cheaters.

I remember how they originally paired Edge and Lita together, and they did the exact same angle, but with Kane as the stand in for Matt (since Kane had married Lita in storyline the previous year). It was bizarre to see that unfold as the crowds kept chanting for Matt until he finally showed up.

Imagine explaining how this storyline could be a goldmine, only to have Vince come back at you with this Kane stuff straight-faced while being too "writes the checks around here" for you to tell him he's a f***ing moron.

This entire storyline was a hilarious mess. That wasn't a bad deal. Snitsky would have probably only wanted to look at her feet. He was a man of simple pleasures.

It's one of those situations that I don't think should've really been made into the circus it was and that it was their private affairs to deal with as they saw fit away from the public eye and public judgment. I felt bad, to varying degrees, for all three when it was playing out. Matt least of all because he weaponized the situation in a way that it helped ensure his rehire and got him a big level program again, and for a spell had the crowds hot for him more than they were for practically anybody else at the time.
Still had to be awkward though.
And it led to WWE getting a get out of jail free card with a lot of the audience for a very long time in being able to treat Lita in horrible, misogynistic ways. Like her retirement segment...

Like her retirement segment... Edge got the best deal out of it, really. Edge was in the midst of a main event push, but he was a rather bland unhinged heel going into the storyline. The Lita affair turned his character into a total sleezeball, and that was the main event persona he needed to have in order to break into the main event scene.

I still think Matt could have been a bigger deal if he was written better.
I did a fantasy booking in my head of his return.
What actually happened was: Vince comes out and introduces him, and they shake hands and Vince leaves. It was stupid because of him being fired in the first place.
What I wish had happened was: Vince comes out, introduces Matt, Matt goes to shake his hand and hits him with a Twist of Fate, spits on him, and walks out.
He would've been made after that.
Yeah it's a bit Stone Cold, but it would have worked a million times better than what they did on top of making a TON more sense story wise.

I love Matt Hardy and am as big of a mark for the Broken Universe as anyone. But in this whole situation, he came off like a little bitch.
From what I understand Matt and Lita were more of an on-again/off-again casual kind of relationship. She had either moved out of his house or was in the process of doing so. They were pretty much done.
Now of course Edge being a close friend of Matt, shouldn't have gone after his ex. But they weren't married, they didn't have kids. Edge and Lita are two attractive people traveling the country together, things happen, people make mistakes.
Then instead of handling it within the company. Matt rants about it online and kills the kayfabe Kane/Lita/Snitsky storyline. Granted the storyline was horrible, but still.
The WWE fires him, then realizes they could make a ton of money from a Hardy/Edge feud and bring him back. So what does Hardy do? A creepy promo where he says Edge ruined his chance to get married, have kids and he wished Edge dies in a car crash, making himself look like a psychotic incel.
I think by the end of it, most people were thinking. "Yeah, Edge is a kind of a dick, but Lita's hot as hell can you blame him for hooking up with her? And Matt Hardy is a creepy weirdo. No wonder Lita wanted to be with someone cool like Edge."

They ever say why Edge and Lita broke up?

They ever say why Edge and Lita broke up? The video points out that the circumstances of the affair killed any desire to be in that relationship from both parties pretty quickly.

Man that entire thing made me hate Edge lol. I felt so bad for Matt. This. I’m surprised by the responses here from people saying they sympathised with the cheaters against the guy with a legitimate grievance because.... he was too vocal about it, I guess? Never mind that he had actually been fired for having the temerity to be upset.

Personally I think Matt had all the right in the world to wish Edge died in a car crash, dude was his good friend and he just steals his lady. Glad both are good again..

I think it later came out that Lita left Matt because he was being paranoid and controlling but when she was with Edge she was single and living on her own.

The way the fans and company treated Lita was disgusting. Yeah, cheating sucks but that’s her private life and it’s quite the double standard that Edge (who was married) never got any flack and his career benefited greatly. Plus I heard that Matt cheated on Lita too. I just really hated the way Lita got treated. Being a young girl at the time, seeing one of your favorites go from awesome punk-rock chick to whore sucked. And a year before that Lita was stuck in one of the worst angles ever. Man, the second half of her WWE career was not so good.

Never mind that he had actually been fired for having the temerity to be upset. Firstly, cheating is a symptom, not the problem itself. You don't cheat for no reason. Not that I am in any way saying that Matt is to blame, just stating from the off that my attitude towards the fidelity of other people may be an outlier. Secondly, Matt was bringing his personal life into work long before it was made into an angle. This was a shoot that was turned into a work. Wrestling is full of main event cheaters, these ones had the nerve to get caught. I wasn't watching at the time, and my hindsight view is that it sucks that Matt got betrayed, but his behaviour afterwards was pretty disgraceful. Outside of the affair itself, Lita an Edge pretty much didn't put a foot wrong.
