According to Gary Owens, announcer and voice artist, he was friends with Theodore Geisel aka Dr. Seuss and he said Seuss which is also his actual middle name is pronounced “Soice” like “Voice” since it’s a German name.
I recently discovers that Dr. Jekyll’s names was intended to be pronounced “Jee-kill” according to Robert Louis Stevenson himself.
I have one more, but I can’t remember. I’m still having trouble convincing people of these two.
How about you?

I didn't learn until fairly recently that New Orleans is supposed to be pronounced as New Or-le-ans, rather than New Or-leens.

I can't think of too many examples but there are definitely times where I have only read words in a book and not heard them out loud, and had a wrong idea about how to pronounce them.
One example is the name Arkady. I was pronouncing it Arcade-y. When it is more like Ark-a-dee.
I had jokingly kept it on a list of potential baby names, luckily it wasn't something I had really liked or my kid might have ended up with a mispronounced name.

Americans need to correctly start pronouncing aluminum the right way, when it's clear you pronounce it aluminum

Americans need to correctly start pronouncing aluminum the right way, when it's clear you pronounce it aluminum The original spelling and pronunciation was aluminum. And it is so correct you did it that way twice. More efficient, one less syllable.

Kitiara from the Dragonlance series. I pronounced it Kee-Sha-rs for a long time. Then found out it’s actually Kitty Aura. Which still sounds weird to me. As I’ve been a huge fan of those books for years.

Chalk this up to not understanding how another language works: When the former Kana signed with WWE, I had no idea her new name was pronounced as “aw-ska” until her first appearance in NXT. Similarly, the correct pronunciation of Nakamura’s first name being “shin-skay.”
I suppose it’s because my earliest experience with wrestlers from Japan was through WCW, and the announcers always pronounced their names phonetically. For instance, Kensuke Sasaki’s first name being announced as “ken-soo-kay” and Akira Hokuto being announced as “ho-koo-to.”
I remember Lance Storm and Eric Bischoff discussing these mispronunciations on their respective podcasts.

My friend decided to name his daughter Aoife. He lives in Iowa. Kid's going to be called Ayy-wife til she either legally changes it or moves to Ireland.

When I was a kid, I pronounced the Marvel character Annihilus' name as "ann-ee-hill-us" before I realized it was supposed to be "uh-nie-il-us"

I have been reading comics almost all my life, and until he showed up in the movies I was pronouncing Thanos wrong.
Also, Babel as in the tower. I always thought it was Bah-bell, but my mom recently corrected me that it's actually pronounced like babble.

"Never make fun of people who mispronounce words, it means they learned it by reading."
When I was 5, my sister laughed at me because I thought the Archie character Reggie's name was pronounced with a hard g-sound (like "golf") and not a soft g-sound (like "George"). It didn't make sense to me, the way they said almost made it sound like it had a d-sound in it (Red-gie).
