Orange Cassidy is like one of those lazy anime characters who don't want to put effort into anything if they can help it. But if you cheese them off enough, they get serious and murder you in a second. He is Shikamaru in real life

I want to see him fall on his arse doing the stupid hands in pockets thing, but hopefully not while throwing himself around with no ability to protect himself should his opponents be out of position or otherwise be unable to catch him.
Too lazy to wrestle is a great gimmick for a WCW Worldwide jobber, not so much for a guy they're actively going to push and I really don't like the guy doing flips and jumps with his hands in his pockets, that stuff is risky enough without being able to protect yourself or your opponent on landing should it go wrong.

How long has he been doing this for? I ask because it sounds like a limited gimmick that will get old fairly quickly. Like it's funny the first time you see it, but surely this act gets diminishing returns after you see it a few times.

It's really taken off in the last couple years, particularly due to his reigns as IWTV champion, but he's been doing the lazy gimmick for around 5 or 6 years now. From my knowledge, he mostly started doing the gimmick in tag team matches with Chuck Taylor, so he'd come in, do some of the comedy stuff, then tag out to Taylor, who'd do most of the heavy lifting in-ring. Later, he started doing more singles wrestling with the gimmick (he'd been wrestling under another gimmick as well), and that's when he started to really mix the comedy with the actual wrestling. Someone feel free to correct me on anything I may have gotten wrong.

Someone feel free to correct me on anything I may have gotten wrong. I think you’re about right. But I’d say maybe a little longer. I watched an old match of his from 2011 where he had tights on and he wrestled, but had the “whatever” attitude. So that was probably the very beginning of the gimmick. Chuck Taylor had a series on YouTube and OC was in it doing the lazy character and that started in 2012. From what I can tell, going back through his indie matches that are available on the IWTV app, he really started upping the wrestling aspect of the gimmick about 2/3 years ago. He had another outlet to be a very serious wrestler, so it as probably pretty fun for him to have the OC gimmick. But even back when he was teaming with Chuck Taylor pretty often he’d break out some good moves and surprise everyone. He’s just so good. I’m waiting for AEW to give him that David Starr type match. I think people who don’t get it will once they see what he can do. Have someone like PAC take him to his limit. It’ll be awesome.

Interesting that he has been going for that long. I've only been aware of him over the past year due to his mentions on a certain podcast that I will not mention for fear of instigating another 30 page discussion about the host I guess adding the wrestling ability to the comedic character has helped his shelf life. But i'll be fascinated to see how a tv audience watching his gimmick on a weekly basis react over time. It's probably something that AEW would be wise not to over expose.

You do know having his hands out wouldn't really do jack shit to help him if his opponent's out of position, right? He'd still be hitting the ground hard.

I have a feeling that Kevin Nash loves the gimmick and wishes he had thought of it first. Except that Nash would throw a quad trying to climb the top rope with his hands in his pockets (or since he doesn't have pockets, awkwardly pushed flat against his hips).

He has a cool look to him. I just can't stand the light little "kicks" he does while his opponents just stand there like idiots. Comedy wrestling like that takes me right out of it. I'd call it ring psychology. Goldust was a master. Jake the Snake. Countless others. They got under the skin of their opponents and at the first sign of sloppiness, they capitalized. Where's the comedy in that? It's brilliant.

It has had and will continue to have a long shelf life.

People who don't like him because he isn't super serious like in the territory days of 'rasslin' need to realise that this isn't Smokey Mountain anymore and people want to actually enjoy themselves and have fun, a novel concept, I know.

Exactly, like, I'll never understand people loathing anything to do with fun in pro wrestling; the real world we all live in is shit and full of horrible people who do bad things on a nearly weekly basis. Characters and gimmicks like Orange Cassidy are some of my favourites because, not only is he dynamite in the ring, but he's a good bit of escapism from all the things that we need to get away from.

The light kicks are fine by me: nobody sells them as painful, and it's meant as a spot to pop the crowd. There's lots of spots like that where we could ask "why would somebody just take that?", but if it's drawing a reaction and getting over then we gloss over it, and I think that applies here. And most people don’t exactly “just take it” as such, they’re usually frozen to the spot for a few seconds with a “wtf is going on” look on their face before eventually retaliating with a move which is exactly how someone probably would react to that in real life.

He's literally been only doing 1 thing these weeks, the flip. The longer this goes, the pop when he does his first actual move is going to be amazing. There's always a bit of a sense of "is THIS the week it happens?" The guy's been in tag matches and battle royals where he's been able to do nothing, this is building the tension week by week. He's basically this guy: You know he's going to do something cool you don't want to miss, but you don't know when.
