I am kinda amused that with the "worse" episodes that turned people off, this is what did it for you.
I still watch and like FG....just consider it light entertainment. Looking for nothing deep and layered.

Family Guy works better as clips for YouTube or something. Whole episodes have too much shit to sift through to get the good moments, which it does still have.
American Dad has never been and probably never will be, funny to me.

I haven’t watched a lot of the new stuff... but have read the “FAMILY GUY IS TERRIBLE NOW” takes for years. I’ve always rolled my eyes and thought it was still a solid funny show.
But I saw a newer episode... the one where Peter decided he was a millennial now, and it was the worst thing I have ever watched. I couldn’t make it through the whole episode, and what I did watch I was just shocked at how bad everything about it was. If all the new stuff is all like that then yikes... it’s bad now.

Hadn't watched the show in years. The other night, I'm eating pizza with my older brother and he's watching an episode. Brian is turning Chris into an intellectual, and Peter is upset that Chris doesn't share interests with him anymore.
I did not laugh at all. Not even a smirk. Show was just dumb. I didn't even watch the whole thing.

I really haven't watched Family Guy for when Seth started to turn Brian into a pretentious dickhead to voice his frustrations through
Somewhat same with South Park and Matt and Trey using the boys doing the same

Haven't watched Family Guy in ages at this point, kind of inclined to keep it that way though certainly open to going back and watching some of the old stuff; episodes from later than, like, season 5 or so (even that's being a bit generous really, show post-revival never was the same) I really don't like at all with rare exception, but I can turn the show on as background noise no problem. Usually recognize when it's terrible but it's the tolerable kind of terrible, sort of like when you get a really awful SVU episode or something.
American Dad... that one bugs me more. For a long time it was by far Seth's best show, and a lot of it still cracks me up, but it really just kind of cratered in quality in season 8 and it's just progressively gotten worse and worse. There are some standards past that - Adventures in Hayleysitting might well be my favorite episode and it's in season 9 - but it's really just a shambling, rotting corpse of what it once was, and the move to TBS has made it worse because it seems like they think being on cable now and having looser restrictions means they must raise the bar and go with more swearing, more sexuality, and more violence even when it'd be funnier if they didn't.

People still watch Family Guy? All the time. It’s the first show I watch Sunday nights. It’s stupid and pointless. That’s what I like about it.

Since it returned to FOX in 2005, I've had several waves of viewing habits when it's come to "Family Guy." 2005-2008 (Seasons 4-6): Appointment viewing. Wherever I am, whatever I'm doing, I stop it all to make sure I'm in front of a television at 9 p.m. for the latest episode. There were even instances where episodes of "Family Guy" would take priority over a Patriots Sunday night game, which feels almost impossible to say now. These three seasons are what I'd consider the apex of the series. 2008-2012 (Seasons 7-10): Actively watching but growing leery of the product. This is about the time when the show became it's most notorious as a pulpit for Seth MacFarlane to preach his views about religion, politics, or whatever other issue he wanted to touch on. It's also when the show may have been at its most grating. While some later episodes were pointless or outright bad, I didn't feel annoyed by them. This era, however, had several episodes where I just rolled my eyes during one of Brian's political/religious rants and thought, "Sheesh, can we get back to the chicken fights already?" 2012-2015 (Seasons 11-13): Not actively watching. If the Sunday Night Football game stinks or if I'm scrolling through and see that it's on or about to start, I'll watch it, but I'm not going out of my way for it anymore. Maybe I'll catch up on demand the next morning, but I'm not making an effort to catch an episode. 2015-present (Seasons 14-now): Completely forgotten. I don't watch, I don't catch up on demand. I've totally forgotten the show exists until a clip pops up on social media or if someone shares a highlight online. I've just lost all interest and I don't see myself regaining it. But ultimately, "Family Guy" is just like "The Simpsons" in so many ways, but in this one particular way: it'll be on as long as its creator wants to do it. Until the day comes when Seth MacFarlane says he's done with the series, it'll continue. We're on season 18 right now and I honestly don't see an end in sight, until the show plummets below 1 million viewers or until MacFarlane says he's done with it. Hell, that might not even be the death nell for a show. Matt Stone and Trey Parker WANTED South Park to get cancelled so they and everyone else could move on to other things (as one might wish to do after 23 seasons), but the network had the contractual ability to keep it going despite their wishes (and renew it for an additional season I believe). Correct me if I’m wrong, but hasn’t McFarlane admitted that FG went overboard on gross out humor for a while because he was deliberately trying to get it cancelled? In the case of all three shows, I suspect they are still going due to merchandising more than anything else.

Has there been any comedy shows that have ran for more than 8 or so series/seasons and were still able to stay funny and fresh? I think I prefer when they keep a show short just so it will always be remembered for having a good run. Better to be Father Ted than a Red Dwarf I can see Rick and Morty going this way in the future.

They've been on for a decade and while they're still consistently funny, it's largely because it's nowhere near as big as Simpsons or Familly Guy and thus doesn't change to cater to larger low brow masses. I hope nothing changes after the movie comes out.

I get that whiff of "it's stale" a lot (especially as this is like the 8th or 9th time they've done the Lois/Peter origin) but I tend to still enjoy the show and they did enough to make it enjoyable. And if you've lasted a long time with them (day one, here) you know they're aware of the tropes and know to look for their ways of acknowledging that.
But yeah.....for me, Family Guy has reached Futurama levels -- I liked that show a lot, but it was just running thru the motions and anyone could tell. I felt bad when it ended, but not devastated.
If Family Guy ends this season I'll feel bad because I like it a lot, but I won't be devastated. I have more than enough of it on DVD to last me a lifetime and I'm happy with that.

To me, Family Guy only had three good seasons (four at a stretch)...and should never have been brought back. Hell, I'd have been content with FOX reviving it only as a movie. They should have just kept doing Star Wars parodies after that. American Dad is vastly superior

They should have just kept doing Star Wars parodies after that. Its revival season was excellent, as great as the pre-cancellation years (which were the best). Been on a slow downward slope since - it's a weird mix of great eps and dismal eps - but it's a humor I appreciate for some sick/dark/twisted reason so at the very least it gets season DVD buys from me.

Yeah, that's why I said "four good seasons", I was including the revival and from there I had the soundtrack and bought the loose "film" Untold Story, I remember the last thing I ever recorded on VHS was a news item related to Family Guy where BBC ONE miscredited them with inventing the Rickroll.
