Repetition of a word, whether through verbal or visual means, causing it to lose meaning or seem 'not real' is known as semantic satiation.
Well, have you ever had that feeling occur with other parts of life? For example, at one point, you start to find the act of consuming food or drink meaningless or not real? Or just plain weird?
I've experienced this effect with many things over the years and it always comes out of nowhere like an RKO - but not as fun or cool.

I work in a government office and one took a week of vacation because I heard the word FORM too many times. Was working the financials of a FEMA flood disaster and there were forms that needed forms to get more forms.
We ended up spending about 20k of admin funds just on getting their forms completed. Then when the inspector came, she ignored them all.

There are times where I catch myself looking at the letter 'Z' for too long and starting to wonder does that letter even look "real" anymore?

huh not done that in ages, exactly how you explained it, and you start to break down the phonetics of the word and irrevocably make it sound different ..... ..... well it is half five in the morning here

the irony that we spell numbers out and NOT letters ..... ONE ZED NOT DEAD a weird dichotomy isn't it another one i did a lot ..... close one eye and stare at a tv screen long enough, your depth perception slowly turns off and it seems that the screen is either getting smaller ..... OR GETTING LAAAAAAAARGER! ..... it is really late isn't it

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but as far as the food and drink thing I find it odd sometimes. Like, why the hell are we stuffing stuff into the part of our body we use to breathe and speak?
