Bret wasn't always the best (think he described himself as 6/10) - His chest protect promo was great and the time he called goldberg an idiot after luring goldberg into a trap to be beaten by steiner The heel promos when Bret led the Hart Foundation in '97, and of course, the El Dandy one. The El Dandy one is hands down one of the funniest promos ever.

The heel promos when Bret led the Hart Foundation in '97, and of course, the El Dandy one. '97 onward heel Bret was a revelation on the mic. He personified the concept of "the heel who believes he's in the right" so well and it added an incredible edge to his promos that's very hard to replicate, even for people who might be more naturally at ease when talking than Bret was. I think it helped that, as OSW said, Bret just shines when he's complaining about something, and not to badmouth him, but that seemed to be because Bret's the kind of guy who has more energy having a bit of a moan than he does when everything's peachy keen. Besides, by '97, that was just much easier to believe, anyway. He'd been jerked around, kayfabe and out, and he had a very real bitterness to him, as well as maybe taking himself a touch too seriously. He seems happier now, but he had a chip on his shoulder, as many of the best heels do, that came from a real place. Hogan lied to him, Vince certainly stretched some truths, he had to deal with Shawn being a little bitch about everything and trying to undermine him, and he was showing fatigue from the responsibility of always having to be the one holding a lot of his family together, which fed into a self-righteous streak. It's hard looking back not to wonder how he didn't have a nervous breakdown under those circumstances.

I loved everything about the Ronda/Becky segment the night after the Rumble, including Ronda's promo even though she usually wasn't very good in that area.

I remember a promo from Jeff Hardy dressed up as The Joker(it was geared towards The Undertaker) that was really good.

If I remember right, in WCW, wasn't Scott Steiner's fake retirement speech actually pretty good?

If I remember right, in WCW, wasn't Scott Steiner's fake retirement speech actually pretty good? It was legitimately good acting from Steiner, complete with tears and trembling in his voice. Maybe one of the highlights from that first Russo run in WCW.

El Generico, being from Mexico and not fluent in English, wasn't really known for his promos, but he did have one really good one about Kenny Omega and Chuck Taylor where he was going to piss in their boots and their ears. but then it took a really dark turn where he confessed to eating children ("like buffet")
but still, I think good

SUPERBRAWL SATURDAY is still one of the best from Lex too. I know people say it a bad promo but its 100% Lex trying his best without a damn clue. I can buy his frustration as 100% real, he is one of biggest stars/legends the world has ever seen and he should been shown more respect. What's Lex's best promo? 🤔 I DON'T KNOW!!!!!!!

A mention to Matt Hardy, useless with a live mic ("car crash" debacle) but given pre taped stuff he came into his own first at ROH and then the evolution of the Broken character. Makes you wonder how many other wrestlers who are useless at in ring promos would thrive with pre taped stuff and even the promo legends of the 80s such as Roberts and Savage probably benefited from having lots of takes to get it right and may have floundered doing it live (in ring promos really became a thing in the New Generation era IIRC). Matt's ROH promo with the flash cards where he doesn't say a word is brilliant.

In the same vein you could also say the same about the current pre-taped Rob Van Dam promos being the best of his career.

Bump!
I remember when Ryback did a promo against John Cena after he turned heel where he talked about the events that lead up to it that was really good. Granted it was pretaped, but I think it qualifies for the thread.

Brandi during Jade's debut promo.
I don't know where Brandi got that fire from that one magical night, but if she could perform like that every night the fans might not be so bitter about Brandi and Cody's attention whore antics.

Lita was usually a terrible promo but cut a really good, passionate promo on her last Raw in 2006 about her legacy, her injuries and how she broke glass ceilings for women in wrestling. Presumably the reason it was so good is it was Amy Dumas venting under the guise of Lita.

Going back to Bret, his promos during the Owen feud, like the one where he doesn't want to fight Owen, you really feel like that's a line this guy will never cross, that family means so much to him he hates even having to address it.
Bret was good when it was something "real" if he's facing a fake Sumo wrestler, a King, a pirate or any of the other cartoony gimmicks, then he struggled more.
If it was about family, about the state of the world, about being a great champion and competitor, something grounded and real he was fine and could even be great.

Her promo on Shawn Spears was also really damn good. I wonder if it helps if she's got some form of bond or attachment to the person she's doing a promo on, as I imagine she almost certainly saw a lot of potential in Jade, and presumably still does, and obviously, Spears is close to her family.

Bump! I remember when Ryback did a promo against John Cena after he turned heel where he talked about the events that lead up to it that was really good. Granted it was pretaped, but I think it qualifies for the thread. When Ryback turned back face after his heel run against Cena he cut a great promo about forgetting who he was. I think it was YouTube only though. While we are discussing people who are better on the mic in pre tapes - Brock Lesnar. And while I am talking about Brock - before they brought Heyman back as his mouthpiece Brock had this segment with Big Johnny where Brock was utterly terrible, but for me it was a great promo because who has the guts to take a mic off Brock, even if he is going on and on?
