At first it really wasn't serious hate, it was Austin just calling out the biggest star he could. Then Bret beat him at Survivor Series with wrestling. But that didn't stop things, it only got it started. You had the Pillman gun angle antics as well (why Austin hated Pillman to that degree is a topic of another thread), going after a Hart ally. Then throw in stuff like Austin screwing Bret out of the Rumble win, the Raw title match with Sid, etc. I think at some point even in storyline terms Austin worked his way into a shoot, taking a rivalry based on calling out the big star and making it uber personal. What's weird is that there was never a real blow off to it. I suppose you could say Austin beating Owen for the IC title at Survivor Series the night of the Screwjob was the final blow off to anything Austin/Harts related, but he never quite got even with Bret. There was the In Your House match after WM13, I think Austin won that via DQ. The alleged blow off was supposed to Wrestlemania XIV but alas.

What if....
Vince Russo doesn't say he thinks Bret Hart is gonna win the 1997 Royal Rumble thereby making a panicked Vince McMahon to change the finish?
Shawn Michaels doesn't lose his smile?
My guess is that after losing clean at Survivor Series & being eliminated by Bret at the Royal Rumble Austin would have been moved back down the card.
1997 is such a weird year because all of this real life stuff impacted booking which lead to people working themselves into a shoot & Steve Austin going from star to mega-star.

He went after the top guy. Makes sense, even though he was utterly obliterated.

Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale >>>> your favorite canadian beer. SLEEMAN'S. Don't argue with Al Capone. I love how this thread at least partially turned into a debate about the best Canadian beer lol

Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale >>>> your favorite canadian beer. SLEEMAN'S. Don't argue with Al Capone. Actually, Sleeman’s Honey Brown might be the best Canadian beer from a major brewery. There’s lots of crafts beers that are better, but in terms of widely available beers Sleeman’s HB is pretty damn good

WM13 match was mostly even. He did. The way the match was laid out Austin did something & then Bret did something & each time Austin got the better of him. But Austin was cocky and wouldn't release the MDD when Bret went to the corner.

A little more to it as well: it starts when Bret is in exile after Wrestlemania 12, still low-key made about the ending and so when they interview him, he talks about how the best wrestler in the company now is Austin, who has been railing against the company and starting trouble. Austin thinks Bret is retired and never coming back, so he calls him - a challenge he never has to answer. Except Bret answers it, and Austin now has to take on somebody he's worried he can't actually beat, which we see when he snaps on Pillman for being too excited about the match. And Bret comes back and does it: outwrestles The Ringmaster, beats him by trapping him with a counter to his finisher, killing off that part of Austin for good. All that's left is the psychotic part of him now, but no matter what he does, he STILL can't beat Hart, and it drives him crazy and drives him to drive Hart crazy, which finally, he does: all the trappings of babyface fighting champion Bret Hart get filed away by Austin, and the heel that Bret once was is left exposed. The payoff, to me, has always been that as all this is going on, Michaels is also making Bret's life miserable and eventually becomes the tool the company uses to get rid of Bret because he's become so much trouble (like Austin had been, but now on a much bigger scale). And so it ends up that, once Bret is gone, it falls on Austin himself to be the one who avenges him by beating Michaels and driving him out. So, yeah, best feud of all time. I just realized: did Austin use the Million Dollar Dream after that? No, he didn't break it out till WMXVII, almost 5 years later when he was incredibly desperate to beat the Rock, who took everything from Austin and still wouldn't stay down.

Because he quit because he lost to Shawn Michaels. The pretty boy, the "Boy Toy," kicked his ass back to Canada.

Do you think that without Montreal, Bret would've stayed & been the one to put over Austin at Wrestlemania XIV? He already put Austin over at Wrestlemania 13. Had Bret stayed then Austin could've been the champ before Wrestlemania 14.

I think either Russo or Cornette said it, so take it for what you will. If both said it I would take it as plausible. Ditto with Prichard. But so far I can't find a source outside of Russo. With that being said if you look at the bug eyed reaction Austin made when Bret's music hit that was a total heel reaction. So I find the idea that the switch was last minute with in the realm of possibilities.

I definitely think they were waiting for Wrestlemania for the crowning moment with Austin. And I know Bret obviously helped to make Austin a star at 'Mania 13, but even so, Bret still won. What I meant was, if Montreal doesn't play out, is the culmination of the Bret vs Austin storyline Stone Cold beating the Hitman for the title instead of Michaels?
