I always took it as him focusing all his rage on the biggest target he could find. What better way to wreak havoc than by trying to destroy the WWF’s standard bearer? This. Plus Bret pretty much singled him out (kayfabe-wise) as the guy he wanted to face, which in a character like Stone Cold's case wouldn't mean "I respect him, he likes me" but rather "now I can do all sorts of shit and it's more important."

He already put Austin over at Wrestlemania 13. Had Bret stayed then Austin could've been the champ before Wrestlemania 14. I definitely think they were waiting for Wrestlemania for the crowning moment with Austin. And I know Bret obviously helped to make Austin a star at 'Mania 13, but even so, Bret still won. What I meant was, if Montreal doesn't play out, is the culmination of the Bret vs Austin storyline Stone Cold beating the Hitman for the title instead of Michaels? Bret was on his way out so screw job or not he was gone before the end of 97. Wrestlemania 14 was in March of 98. I think both he and Vince were going in separate directions and Vince wasn't going to pay him what WCW did.

It was as simple as Bret thought he was the best, and Stone Cold thought Bret was nowhere near as good as him. Not just that, he found it personally insulting that the Hitman thought he was better than him. Stone Cold also saw Bret Hart as a self-righteous crybaby who was given everything and yet still complains, while Stone Cold has actually been screwed over for his entire career.

I’m watching 1997 raw and I’m up to the summertime. Why did Stone Cold hate Bret so much? We talk about heelish things that people like Cena, Batista, and Roman did but man Stone Cold took it to another level lol. He attacked Bret while he was in a wheelchairHey, I was livid when Cena was 'bout to attack Angle in a wheelchair! (I seriously did not understand the storyline during that while as I had not been watching so much regularly before, I thought Cena was a "bad man" in this situation) ~ Let's not forget that...

Just popped in to say that this is still my favorite feud of all time But to answer the question, it was as simple as Stone Cold believing he was the best wrestler on the planet. Obviously, he took exception to Bret’s catchphrase and legacy and needed to get him back to the WWF to prove that he was the best. Losing to Bret just made Austin even madder because he refused to believe he wasn’t still the best, no matter what happened with Bret. Yep. Such great, basic storytelling. Austin was there every week winning matches in '96 while Bret was at home, then Bret came back still calling himself the best. Pissed Stone Cold off. Now we have a feud. I'm not sure why they don't try going that simple anymore. It still works.

I'm not sure why they don't try going that simple anymore. It still works. Exactly. That’s why he had to keep calling Bret out, goading him to come back so he could back up his words. Austin acting like Bret was ducking him was brilliant and such an easy way to get heat. The fans wanted to see Bret come back and shut this guy up. What a successful formula

I'm not sure why they don't try going that simple anymore. It still works. It really revolves around having defined characters; if your characters are well developed, then you only need the simplest motivations to set them against one another, because their well-defined traits will bounce off and react to that of their rival's. When you give up on allowing there to be well developed, organic characters, you lose out on that.

In my opinion, Steve Austin in '96/'97 is the greatest character ever in wrestling.

In my opinion, Steve Austin in '96/'97 is the greatest character ever in wrestling. This allegedly was the first Raw where Russo was heavily involved in the creative. This came after the prior weeks show which was taped in South Africa & did a god awful rating.

In my opinion, Steve Austin in '96/'97 is the greatest character ever in wrestling. Canadian stampede was arguably the end of his feud with Bret. He kind of always got the better of Bret outside of the actual matches, and even in the IYH one, he had Bret in the sharpshooter, and the Hart Foundation had to save him. After attacking Bret in the Ambulance, I kind of wanted Bret to get SOME vengance on him. Really, the only time he did so, was the Raw before Canadian Stampede where the entire foundation jumped him and Bret put the figure four on Austin around the post.

Bret likes his steaks well done. That shit won’t fly with a proud Texan like Stone Cold.
