I like wacky gimmicks as much as the next guy, but it falls apart if the people aren't into it. Like, the actual look is almost like that Rik Bugez dude that had one match on NXT and got so damn over with the schtick that they had him do his entrance again for the crowd. He hasn't been on TV since. I don't know how this would have gone, they do have some underrated comedy chops, but I feel like Dawson and Wilder take themselves too seriously to have been in any way into this. You're right. They do take themselves too seriously and I think that's the problem with most wrestlers today. They forget that wrestling is a performance. They think they're "real badasses" and their egos often get in the way. Imagine the likes of Rikishi said "You want me to rub my ass in another man's face? Hell no"... Dude wouldn't have a career. I would go as far to say that most of that stuff would make you more money and get more eyes on the product than putting on a 5 star wrestling clinic while looking as boring as physically possible. Casual fans want goofy gimmicks and storylines. That's why the Attitude Era was absolute peak wrestling. To us diehards, something like Beaver Cleavage was trash but in the real world, that sorta thing gets talked about more on Social Media than American Alpha vs The Revival. You are amazingly correct

And that's sort of the key thing about this. Especially using the Vaudevillains as an example, you could build a show around gimmicks that are creative and outlandish yet not stupid enough for people to not think they work in-universe. When they got called up, they were just dudes who happen to dress up in 1920s style gear when, if you put them in even the New Generation, they would have vignettes, commentary would have fleshed out the gimmick, interviews would be done with a logo or a tint to them to make it look like an old movie, the full nine yards. To blame the wrestlers for this is weird because there are wrestlers doing that right now and others who don't have as grand a gimmick able to parody themselves and do comedy matches every so often. WWE seems to have forgotten completely that it's a two way process with this stuff. You can't just take Chad Gable, repackage him as Shorty G, have him take no development on the kind of wrestler he is or how many wins he has and suddenly expect people to care. Exactly that. I remember seeing them and thinking they could've been fun, but they just wore the gear and that was it. They didn't wrestle like pioneer-era wrestlers, or have a carnival barker manager with a megaphone, or have silent movie and newsreel vignettes where they lifted old-fashioned barbells, or any of the number of fun things you could do with that gimmick. And it's a recurring theme with WWE gimmicks, you see the beginnings of what could be a good idea and it just doesn't go anywhere. Or the idea clearly just isn't thought out properly to begin with so doesn't work at all. thing is in NXT... THEY were doing stuff like that. Aiden English had a megaphone he would use to cut promos. They had a vingette against the Lucha Dragons where they were basically silent film era villains... I think Gotch had a few old timey feats of strength in backstage gimmicks as well... it wasn't a lot of it but They decided to do NONE of that in WWE. and yes... Character does get people more over... but the WWE doesn't let the people they've called up from NXT to have a character. American Alpha especially Gable had charisma for days... when they called them up to the WWE they didn't let them talk and the "Ready Willing And Gable" towel and chant they got over with NXT was immediately called stupid garbage by JBL on screen... and again they weren't given any kind of promo time or any reason for anyone to give a shit about them... so fo course they failed on the main roster. Revival's team were an old school southern roughneck team... put them against flashier guys and let them wrestle like they do (And you know let them win) and they'd have got over... don't do stupid shit like the usos feud with them. edit: As for these things if true... yeah maybe it'd be a fine gimmick without any details it's hard to actually say... but gimmicks have to fit the people you are giving it to and this certainly doesn't match the preformers... also I can't help but notice the bright red lips... so yeah this seems like another hehe they're effeminate ISNT THAT THE HEIGHT OF COMEDY?! but the mock ups look really quickly done like in paint quickly done... so I'm not entirely sure these are legit.

I'm not saying comedy gimmicks can't work. But I have zero faith that WWE would've made this one work. I'm guessing The Revival felt the same way.

They look like European street performers. And what were they going to do? Make them play with devil sticks? lol Those outfits do have that Morris Dancer vibe to them. Just going down to the ring, beating on the sticks while dancing in a circle and they'd be a massive hit...in some parts of the UK but nowhere else.

Re Rikishi comparisons I think that gimmick would fail today as crowds/viewers have less of an attention span or patience for recurring gags (more entertainment options maybe) if done today by the 10th time Rikishi rubbed his arse in someones face or Santino hits the cobra or Scotty does the worm or the Dudleys do the "wassup" ect ect people would fold their arms and say "got anything new?" Orange Cassidy is very talented so watch him make subtle changes to his act to avoid becoming the next "I didn't do it" boy.
Having said that I think they could've have pulled off the outfits but not the lipstick.

Comedy gimmicks can work if it's the right person with the gimmick and they're invested enough with it to get it over.
But let's not pretend this was a genuine attempt by the WWE to get The Revival more over. It was an idea from Vince and Company to try and embarrass them as punishment for wanting to leave, typical Vince bully behaviour.

This is garbage that they'd put on main TV for a few weeks while Cole does his stupid fake laugh before being taken off TV.

There isn't a way in hell this would have worked. It's too all over the place
The big Shatter Machine Medallion MIGHT have worked for something to get over and sell, but the rest of the gimmick looks like shit. The bright offsetting colors, the dew rags/goofy hats, the apparent glowsticks, bow ties, LIPSTICK? There's too much going on here to actually sell them as even a comedy act.
Comparing them to Buschwhackers is pretty generous because Bushwhackers while goofy had memorable gear and a memorable look, this is dead on arrival as something people would turn on because it's not solid enough even as a comedy gimmick to latch on to one thing.
They look like they came from what Back to the Future in the 80's thought "The Future" was gonna look like...

It was an idea from Vince and Company to try and embarrass them as punishment for wanting to leave, typical Vince bully behaviour. It would almost be worth them doing it just because they wouldn't give a shit - like with the pranks the Usos were pulling on them. They just did not care, and went for it anyway - and they'll be no less over for that once they hit the indies.

Or the idea clearly just isn't thought out properly to begin with so doesn't work at all. This reminds of me my thoughts not long ago about the Robert Stone character and now Malcom bivens. They are suppose to be "agents"/business men that have their own enterprises but nothing about them has gone any further than just telling us they are. Where as Famous B from LU took that concept and ran full the f*** with it.....He was an agent to the stars but it was not just enough to just tell the audience this....he had commercials , he had business cards he handed out , he had his own line where people could call because they to wanted to be famous. He had Brenda as an example of his ability to turn someone from a nobody into a somebody , he was literally advertising his company on his suits lol. Bivens and Stone are like you said seemingly good ideas but are going nowhere....I will give Stone credit atleast he dresses the part even though lofers without socks is the most vile crime against any sort of fashion and footwear.
