I am no expert on the NES my Nintendo introduction started with the Gameboy and then onto the Super Nintendo so my only exposure to the NES was a friend who had one. His games were limited to Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, Boulder Dash and North vs South.
Since way back then I have had a chance to catch up on the NES (with the benefit of my snes classic) playing the well known greats like Castlevania, SMB3, Batman, Metroid etc ... but apart from my own appreciation of North Vs South which is still fun what are your nostalgic or hidden gems on the NES?
If you like maybe what your top 5 NES games that are great but others may not have considered or heard about?

I'd need to think on a specific list later but top of my head Joy Mech Fight is way more fun than you would think it is.
There's also this bootleg Donkey Kong Country port that's pretty damn solid.

Its a tough game in parts, but Bucky O'Hare is an enjoyable Konami take on the run and gun platformer:
Fantastic music too; easily one of my go to soundtracks to recall what the NES soundchip could do in the right hands.

I always loved playing Bad News Baseball. It's probably my favorite baseball game ever, along with the MLB baseball game for the old Sega Game Gear.

One sort of obscure NES game that I love is Dig Dug II. It's a really fun little puzzle type game.

This one is a great platformer! Very much like Super Mario Bros. 3 (and that's a good thing).

I'll just steal a bit of in-game dialog and say: "It's fun to play The Goonies II"

I'll have to look back and think, but ones that usually aren't mentioned much:
Flintstones: The Rescue of Dino and Hoppy (never really played much of Dinosaur Peak to judge it) DarkWing Duck Batman Returns (not as good as the SNES game, but solid regardless) Tiny Toon Adventures Felix the Cat (super easy, but fun) Gunsmoke

Would Clash At Demonhead count?
Also, Nintendos Pinball is fun as hell. As is Wrath of the Black Manta

I don't know if they would count as hidden gems but Kirby's Adventure and Tecmo Super Bowl are two of the greatest games on the system and even though they get praised, I still feel like they don't get enough of it. I hear They are never talked about when it comes to "greatest NES game ever". Tecmo Super Bowl is about as flawless as you can get for a football game and I feel like Kirby's Adventure gets overshadowed/overlooked by other platformers such as Megaman and the Mario trilogy.
Some more hidden gems would be...
StarTropics: I feel like is what Zelda 2 should have been. If you're a fan of the old school Zelda games, this one is worth checking out. Controls and game play take some time to get use to, but once you get it down, it's a great game.
Gimmick: A very hard but very fun platformer. An NES game using a momentum mechanic is quite impressive, not to mention one of the best soundtracks on the NES.
Sadly this never came out officially in the US, but you can get a reproduction cart and/or emulate it with no problems. I hate to say emulate a video game because I'm a person that wants to play it legit, but that's about the only way you'll play Gimmick!

Asterix, mostly because it didn't leave Europe. The gameplay was solid but it's more the music that's underated, some of the best on the NES.
Agree on Darkwing Duck, although most would see it as a Megaman ripoff, I played this first though so that wasn't an issue.

Bucky O'Hare is my pick too, even if a lot of the game is trial and error platforming.

Toxic Crusaders is a very fun beat 'em up!
The Noyd (Domino's 90s mascot) video game is much more fun than it has any right to be.

Does Ufouria count? That's one of my favourite games like ever, I even made framed prints of each character on my SNES corner.

Haven't seen Flintstones anywhere in years, excluding maybe couple american cereal box ads and so on.

Was this a very well sold game at some point? I don't know. But I played the crap out of it as child and always laughed how funny the character looks. Old man baby, if ya will.
